hi it's brian smith with risk reconnaissance if you're a government contractor chances are you have a website obviously in today's world a website is the proverbial portal in your business but if you're not careful your business website could be the cause of expensive insurance premiums or difficulty in even obtaining an insurance quote if you're experiencing higher than expected insurance costs or even found it hard to get a quote for your govcon business stay tuned as i address the keys to a successful website on this edition of risk reconnaissance [Music] hi it's brian smith again with the insurance office of america the govcon insurance guy let me guess your govcon business has a website that includes all the things your company has done in past performance currently does or even more concerning could do it may even have complex operational terms words and phrases like weapons weapon systems anti or counter terrorism munitions battlefield assessments military training avionics or simply the word military now going a step further let's say the website images include pictures of soldiers with weapons doing operations guns firing from tanks or cannon special operation forces combat aircraft or even watercraft believe it or not these terms phrases and images scare the heck out of a commercial insurance underwriter even before reading over your insurance application you know the one that you filled out extensively for coverage your website may have already resulted in a declination to even consider your company for the insurance that's right just from the website underwriters make the assumption that everything on your site is real and will result in a claim or challenge their perception of what they consider as unwarranted or unwanted risk think of it this way chances are your insurance professional has not served in the military or they even routinely work with government contractors they're used to working with commercial entities that never include military operations not to mention anything remotely that includes complex weapon system analytics that's just for example they're just not familiar with it meaning that for all intents and purposes they're not comfortable and when you have an underwriter that's not comfortable with the risk you're going to be declined for coverage so to offset this lack of comfort at least when it comes to website considering the five following keys number one ask yourself this simple question do you even need to mention all the things that your company does on your website for example your future work is predicated on your proposal response not your website i understand that the prime will visit your site for capabilities but isn't it this that's the capability statement all included there have a button on your site to request that capability statement instead of placing it directly on your website number two review your website language and make the complex simple when detailing your operations remove the words and images of guns weapons or special operations keeping it clean if your company performs let's say weapon systems assessments this is likely done in a computer environment that measures tolerances and overall test results rewording this to read something like symptoms and systems analytics in a simulated training environment which is virtual maybe the same thing but you're saying it in a different way number three use nick's code numbers without the descriptions any govcon professional is likely already familiar with the codes or they simply know how to look them up adding the description only adds to more scrutiny especially if they have no idea this being the underwriter of course on what they're reading again keep it simple and clean number four keep what you can do off of your website what does that mean well only include what you do do let's say you could perform ammunition storage and distribution but you currently do not have any contracts that do this by saying you could do this means that when it comes to an underwriter you are doing it if there's a sense that your company handles ammunition or for that matter anything related to aviation marine or hazardous materials or operations your application will likely be declined even if you have never done or currently performed this work so remember just because you can do something doesn't mean you should include it on your website number five and finally when it comes to understanding government contractors it's not what your company does when it comes to contracts it's actually what your company doesn't do here's what i mean underwriters will see items in your pws your performance work statement or your statement of work that includes operations that another company will perform either as a prime or a sub but because it's within your p pws or statement of work they're going to assume that your company will do this it is critical to state what your company does not do when it comes to govcon insurance take the assumptions away before their minds wander into areas that have nothing to do with your work now we covered five important key aspects of your website when it comes to govcon insurance programs i hope you found this interesting but more importantly valuable for risk reconnaissance i'm brian smith with the insurance office of america thanks
