you know that we've been talking so much over the last few years about uh social distancing but for many people social distancing has led to social isolation and loneliness and that has had a dramatic effect for many people on their mental and physical well-being now it's the merry month of may and that means two things it's older americans month as well as national mental health awareness month and these topics come mesh perfectly together in today's segment so stay tuned good morning everyone and welcome to scan fyi great to see everyone here today in the month of may so as i said it's uh older americans month and its national mental awareness mental health awareness month and that's great opportunity i think for us to meet dr mishra who is the chair of psychiatry at raritan bay medical center because our topic today really encapsulates both of those themes of the month of may so dr mishra welcome thank you i appreciate you being here and do you want to just tell our audience a little bit about yourself well uh my name is dr mishra as you said i'm here at ferritin bay medical center in part frame boy i've been actually here in with this hospital since 2005 so i've been here 17 years so i know the landscape of the mental health issues in our local area i'm a psychiatrist general psychiatrist first and then i specialized in geriatric psychiatry and i'm board certified in both of them and my areas of interest are basically psychiatric issues psychological issues in the world age all right so we've had a tough time all of us have had a tough time these last few years and i i really i believe that social distancing has led to social isolation and so the first thing if you would define what do we mean by social isolation how is that different than loneliness well yeah both these terms are almost used synonymously but they are not social isolation is basically an objective situation in which a person has very limited or no contact with the outside world and such it's a situation personism while loneliness is emotional distress because of a feeling of being alone or being separated so it is interesting to note that many people may have tens or hundreds of contacts but still feel lonely and on the other hand a person may be living alone but may not feel lonely at all so both things are not synonymous they are different but both of them have effect on our mental well-being so after a long week of work say or being very busy you could come home on saturday and sunday and decide to socially isolate yourself by choice right and just sort of use it as a way of regrouping and refreshing but not that's not necessarily being lonely no that is not actually those periods of uh you know quiet you...
