we're going to begin with the states of emergency across this country here in California they are saying that people could be charged with a misdemeanor if they violate the shelter at home great shutdown of 2020 is underway the biomedical Security State is just getting started covert was just the beginning [Music] hello my name is Roger Severino senior fellow at the ethics and public policy Center and I'm joined today by my colleague at eppc Dr Aaron kariati and first things is hosting this interview to discuss Dr Aaron curiati's book the new abnormal the rise of the BIOS medical security States Dr cariati you are a former professor at the University of California Irvine I have been on the front lines of the covet fight yourself have had a terrible experience dealing with covid vaccine mandates and you're prompted to write this book to discuss where we've come and where we go from here so welcome to this interview thanks Rogers great to be here with you sure so my first question for you is what was the compelling need to write this book what Was Missing in the public debate that you thought needed to be felt so that the book is an attempt at a sort of bigger picture context dependent understanding of what happened not just what happened during the pandemic over the last three years but what led up to the kind of response that we got the sort of 20-year history that I recount in the book of the progressive militarization of Public Health the the welding of Public Health with digital Technologies of surveillance and control and the police powers of the state you can you can see this this merge happening over the last several years but certainly coming to fruition during the pandemic symbolized by things like the vaccine passport right the idea that three years ago uh before the pandemic I would need to get out my phone and show a QR code to get on a plane get on a train go to a restaurant get back into my own country would have seemed absurd and authoritarian and intrusive to most Americans yet during the pandemic that was an opportunity for certain political and financial and other Global interests to introduce these kinds of measures of surveillance and control so it's an attempt to understand not just what happened over the last three years but more importantly sort of where is that infrastructure going to take us next so those things that were rolled out during the pandemic under the auspices of a declared state of emergency are still in place even if some of the specific policies that that those mechanisms were used for have been rolled back so we a lot of places no longer have vaccine passports a lot of vaccine mandates though not all of them have been pulled back obviously most regions are out of lockdown now but all the things that...
