welcome back so in case you can't hear the jingling we have company again yes audi has finally decided that he's not boycotting the videos any longer i guess he's figured out that winter is here and there's nothing he can do about it so he's back to video intrusion well today is sunday and there are two things we have historically done on sundays we've done shop spotlights and projects and we are in fact doing both today so when we come back so why don't we start off with the shop spotlight this is an ebay store it's tina's trove of treasures and she is offering a giveaway uh and as usual with our shop spotlights you will get in touch with her directly and yes i'm sorry yes i'm not paying enough attention i don't know if you've noticed uh you will start uh you will enter the contest by getting in touch with tina and i will give you her email address that will be in a pinned comment at the top of the video i'm going to put it in the video notes as well but youtube sometimes pulls links so i'm going to make sure you have it in two places where to see her shop so you'll have a link to the ebay shop and uh where to enter so why don't we just get started and see what tina has to offer okay so do so do this up do do so well one of the things i noticed was she does she have a lot of little animal oriented goodies um kitties puppies elephants there was one little dog there that rather looked like a chihuahua i think and um we will have to ask greg he has a chihuahua named pablo and that looks that dog looks like its ears are big enough to let it fly so she has a terrific selection go check out her ebay store and then get in touch with her so that you can enter the giveaway uh her winner picker is pogo her dog and oh logos of beauty um i have no idea how pogo's going to do the picking like i said when audi does it i just write names on papers throw it and he just chooses one to play with and that's how he does it yeah he's beating me with his tail because i'm not paying enough attention to him and this is his method of hey me first i we're leaving so we have a shop we have a giveaway participate go take a look the giveaway prize is a set of beautiful swan wall pockets um very nice i thought that was just a delightful prize and the contest rules are going to be in the video notes it's just standard you know um so be sure to check out tina's trove of treasures okay next up we're moving into our project so let me show you the project piece first of all it is this now we all saw this at bedford and i said oh good heavens no way would i even consider it but i have a buyer for this someone who wants it and this is someone who is a collector of black americana so i don't have a problem seeing these in the hands of legitimate collectors i just have an aversion to seeing them somewhere uh where they're going to be objects of mockery that's that's my issue i think um and i need to be comfortable with what i am selling so but this is not just a sale piece because as it stands this piece is kind of a wreck so first step i needed to get some paint and i took him along so let's take a look at that video we are at michael's and we are looking at the acrylic paint aisle and i need a mustardy yellow for the pants for our little fisher boy and this is yellow ochre uh it's a fairly standard color it's the sort of thing that any artist will have for their palette um mixes well with other colors uh usually when i mix i try to stick with the same brand so i'm probably going to pick up a brown as well so let's see what they have this one is a little light i think this one this is called coffee bean and i think between the two i'm probably going to be able to get a good version of that mustard for the little fisher boys pants so into the cart they go and now we're going to look for a red that's definitely a little bright for what we need the red i'm looking for is a muddy that's glitter is a muddy red uh a red that i can probably muddy up here this is this is cardinal red it looks muddy through the bottle uh but in fact cardinal red as the name suggests is a very red red so maybe a little of the brown mixed in with this will give me the color i'm looking for as for the rest of the colors well we need brown for the stump and we've got our brown already and we need black so i'm probably i have black um in my paint stash but i'm probably going to look around and see if i can find black in the same brand here and this is pure black and we're going to use that to darken our colors do a little highlighting on our stump and the boy's face is going to be painted out in this color we are not using this red for the boy's lips which would have been a fire engine red but i have that already in my paint stash so looks like we have everything we need for the painting of that project well these are the paints that i got before this project so i've got them right here and i'm going to hold them up so you can see this is the color i am choosing for his pants it's not exact it disappears a little lighter to me but i got some no wrong one that's red brown paint so that i can mix and darken it up a little if i need to uh i may not uh i may just go with this color because it's actually pretty close um the red even though this looks like a dull red yes all right i'm sorry i realize you're back it looks like a dull red it's probably going to be a little too red to be a good match for this and i want to keep the original colors as much as possible in part because i have seen these redone i have seen them uh produced because this is a chalkware piece with uh concrete poured into the base to give it weight and stability but the surface is all chalkware so they have the molds and they are still currently making pieces like this the modern pieces i i find garish frankly and we want to try to keep the original colors so my red is probably going to get mixed with a little black to darken it up because even though like i said this looks like a good match this is actually cardinal red which means it is much closer to this color and we don't need that so the first thing i'm going to do when i do my color matching is i'm going to take a little bit of this the brown the black and just paint it right on top of the existing color just to see how much i need to alter it um as i say with the pants i don't think i'm going to even if it's not exactly the same color i'm not sure i'm going to alter it at all i think we're probably going to go with that the red yeah so that's how we're going to cope with the pain yes i know this is why they call you photobomb kitty i just want you to know that the next problem we have is this piece had been broken right across the waist and this is the glue that has been seeping out of the cracks so i'm going to have to go across this entire glue joint with a sharp blade and cut that off it's probably hot melt glue it's breaking off very nicely now no could you please not play with that here play with this instead um the reason i'm not taking this apart to re-glue it is because i'm afraid because it's chalk wear that the glue may be stronger than the plaster oh that's by the way when i say chalk wear that's basically a plaster um and it's not worth the risk to try to break it and to end up smashing it or making things worse the glue is holding here let me show you the glue is holding well enough i can hold it by the head and the weight is all in the bottom and it's not falling down so i'm just going to clean up the glue joint i will probably sand it to make sure that it's not conspicuous and then the next thing i'm going to do before i paint is see these areas where the paint is missing particularly on the face i'm just going to sand it down lightly all i want to do is remove any edges just sort of feather the edges in so that when i paint it i'm not um i'm not showing one area slightly elevated above another once it's reasonably smooth and any of the damaged areas are filled in and i've felt around this i'm not feeling much in the way of damaged areas however because we have this glue joint i know there are some areas that are going to have to be taken care of so once that's done um the first thing i am going to do is paint on the black and oh by the way i will bring you along for the painting but i want to give you an overview of what's going to be done so that when we get down to it you know where we're going to paint the black uh i will be painting the entire face black um and then picking out the features later same thing with the arms and then as you can see this leg is painted black this leg the paint has basically just worn off so the legs will be painted black but and here's where the difference comes in so will the stump now as you can see if you take a close look at the stump there are there are recesses and i'm going to paint the whole thing black then i'm going to go over the top with brown now i'll do that with a relatively dry brush so that the brown doesn't seep into these recesses i want the black recesses in there and that will help to create the image that it is a stump that he is sitting on but i have to do that undercoating of black first now there is another way to do that i could paint the whole thing brown then i could take my black paint water it down so that it's really just sort of dirty water basically and then paint that over let it build up in the recesses and just sort of wipe it off the surface it's another way to do it you can get effectively the same result so that that's just a matter of personal preference i'm doing it the way i am doing it because that is how chalkwear pieces were originally done they didn't water down the paint they would throw one color on and then brush another color over it so my method is strictly based on the fact that this is how the piece would have been done when that is done we got all the black we've got our brown painted out uh on our stump i'm going to paint in the clothing um and there is a collar uh running around the shirt and i might paint that in this color too just for a little cute contrast now let me show you this piece this is the fishing pole this is a little fisher boy and we have this metal rod this was apparently painted white at one time and it's pretty badly rusted i really like the look of this this to me looks like an old-fashioned cut off a tree fishing pole you know um not something you buy at the store something you would make with your little pocket knife if you were a little kid going out fishing but the rest is a problem so what i'm going to do with this is i'm going to sand it down a little i don't want to get rid of the rust but i do want to give me i want to give myself a smooth surface and then i'm going to put a matte clear coat on top of it so we will look at that that is a product i use on dolls so when you paint a doll you put a clear coat over it but you don't always want it to be like super shiny so that the doll looks wet this is a matte clear coat and it will contain the rust you will be able to handle it without getting it on your you see it on my fingers i don't want the new owner to end up getting it on his fingers every time he touches this but i want to preserve this this will be the one part of the piece that's actually going to be absolutely original you know with the exception of the clear code so i want to make sure that i'm making it handleable but at the same time preserving the original character of this old rusty metal bar that was used as his fishing pole this i'm not sure what this is um it's supposed to be the fishing line obviously i believe it is original i don't think it ever had a fish on it i think it was just there because pieces like this were intended to be outdoor art so when i do this piece what i may do with this is i may put a little bend into it um maybe even turn up the bottom to represent a little fishing hook that sort of thing just a little bit of creative license um but this because it is the one part of the piece that's actually going to be you know um original we're going to preserve it but i don't know tell me what do you think i think that has a nice old i cut this off a tree look what do you think you think i'm right if you think i'm wrong don't be afraid to tell me because i haven't started on this yet this will be one of the last things i do so if you think you can change my mind because you've got a better idea go for it we've got the time and then when we've got the whole thing done it's all painted i am going to put a spray-on clear coat over it um this is going to be a a sort of uh low sheen coat it's not going to be matte the way the little pole is it's it's going to have a little bit of a sheen very small but it will protect the paint job then we will pack our little guy up and we will see how much the new owner is in for in terms of shipping costs it could be high so that's the start of our project and i thought it might be fun for you to just come with me through the whole uh stage after stage of this from the beginning paint shopping right through to the end so as i say as we move along as time goes by we will revisit this project i will show you what i've done what i am doing and you can follow along okay so thank you for being with me and we will what will we do today how about we look at animal pictures let's look at some animal pictures on our way out of here all right um i will see you all tomorrow tomorrow by the way is going to be the last of our monday videos we're doing a video um for monday for the last time and then henceforth we are going to be doing friday saturday sunday for a while we're going to be still doing book club for a while on thursday nights and then eventually we are going to be moving the friday video over to wednesday and i think that'll be in a couple of weeks when we settle it back into our non-pandemic videoing schedule i know and i know a lot of you are thinking wait the pandemic didn't go away it's like well we are almost at the end they are offering the vaccine to high-risk populations now it's not just the medical workers so i think we may well be looking at a time when we can go back into society and probably well i was going to say sooner than we think but no i thought it was going to be last summer yeah what do i know all right um so i will see you tomorrow have a great day do so so you
