how do you launch a Kickstarter campaign in 2020 and that is what I'm covering with today's YouTube video welcome back to the crowdfunding demystified youtube channel my name is Salvador Brigman without further ado let's just get into it when it comes to this year how do you launch a crowdfunding campaign what are some of the new things that I think you could inject into a campaign in order to be more successful well when I was first getting started there was like not really that much in the way of techniques and tools and strategies in order to run one of these crowdfunding campaigns this was it back in 2012 and it wasn't very much know how its kind of like hit or miss people didn't really know why these campaigns were successful we just saw lots and lots of campaigns getting funding but over the years I've decoded and I've codified this particularly speaking with many you know hundreds of people on my podcast crowdfunding demystified and really put this all into my book the Kickstarter launch formula so that's kind of the first place where I started to you know assemble this in a step-by-step fashion for you but as a results to relates to this year I can't want to go over just a few concepts that I've been working on but also some things that I think are crucial and very important if you're going to be launching a campaign this year now the first one is gonna be if you are thinking of crowdfunding you need some kind of a prototype this is a very common question that I get from a lot of my students a lot of my readers and listeners is can I do crowdfunding if I don't have a prototype if I don't have the product the number one thing you're gonna need in 2020 is you need to show people proof you got a ass wash that's that's a really intense word but their fears and their worries that what you're what you have to promise them is not real right I'm sure you're like an honest person and you've been working probably really hard on a new business idea but people out there don't know that they might think you're scammer or they might not realize that you're you're actually have this product that you've created I'm gonna believe it does what you say it's the whole idea behind a campaign nowadays is you have to prove people with a a prototype that your campaign does what you say is gonna do you have to demonstrate the functionality behind the product and you can get started with you know just a prototype that gives you the look and feel how it's gonna feel in your hand how you're gonna use it in your life you can start off with those prototypes you know I have some videos out there on how to do that in some podcasts but as it relates to marketing and as it relates to the actual project you're gonna need a product that demonstrates the functionality of what it is that you are promising and also with board games like no one wants to invest in a board game concept they want to see people playing the game and enjoying it they want to know how the rules work they want to see other people that are just like them who are saying great things about the board game right and this money is just basically used to to mass-produce it so it's kind of gone are the days where you could just have some kind of a concept and people would throw money your way I remember way back in the day there was a potato salad Kickstarter campaign where a guy raised $50,000 just to make potato salad it was just like an idea he had right so you can't really do that nowadays you need some kind of a workable prototype if you have a prototype you're in a really good spot because that means you can actually start to begin planning a crowdfunding campaign and start to understand the process that goes into that and how that works so my next tip for you when it comes to how to run one of these projects is to work backwards from the customer all too often we try to create something new and innovative and like try to fit that into how can we sell this to the customer instead you want to take the customer and you want to think a little bit about how they would use the product what environments would they use and what are they trying to accomplish at the end of the day typically this is done by just one-on-one talking with people who suffer from the problem that your product solves and really getting nitty gritty with understanding their mindset this is done awesomely with surveys if you do a Facebook ad campaign just throw 50 bucks at a Facebook ad buy campaign get some kind of qualitative feedback in terms of comments and likes and shares or people have questions that's a great way to start this process of gathering you know like a war chest basically of customer feedback and data that then you can use to inform the marketing copy for your crowdfunding campaign you could also do this in a different way where you have a landing page and you get real-world feedback on pricing a real-world feedback on our people willing to give you their name and email address right so this is a whole testing phase that I specialize in when it comes to you before you go live with crowdfunding really mastering that testing fist you can be almost a hundred percent certain that when you go live it's gonna have general traction and demand and interest and so you get funding right out of the gate you also have some of those assets like social media and an email list right so if you were thinking about doing a campaign I would say try to go through some kind of a testing phase where you're gathering that valuable information which will make the whole putting together the page a lot easier now when it comes to the live page you're going to need a few different things so you're gonna need a video you're gonna need compelling reward tiers or things that people can buy into or pre-order once you go live with the project you're gonna need copywriting or basically the campaign text you're gonna need gifts and images to make the page sprucing it up make it more lively make it more visually appealing and interesting these are all the things you're gonna need in order to have an offer a compelling sales page a compelling something you can show people and they emotionally you know that it evokes a sight excitement they they want to become a backer they think this looks really cool and they're drawn in by the promises behind the product of what it can do for their life or they're sold based on the story that went into creating this this is a more like a non-profit fundraiser or something like that so this is like I would say the bare bones to having a successful project but there are a lot more things that you can do that go into that so I think that one of the newer concepts that I've been just hammering on when it comes to a lot of my coaching students and a lot of people that are hiring me for different areas of the campaign is you need to demonstrate unequivocally and emotionally the the proof behind your benefits and your promises and the more that you can do that the more that you can get someone to believe what it is that you say is true the faster they're gonna be able to make a buying decision just think about it you can have someone like a salesperson I'll just say like a a person is trying to sell you a car right and they tell you all the amazing things that the car can do and how it can make you drive really quickly and it's basically you know completely energy efficient and it's a really good price sleek design like all these things amazing promises amazing benefits but do you believe them yeah not yeah right if the price is too good to be true you might all struggle a little bit with the credibility aspects and this is about a lot of marketers and entrepreneurs they're throwing out tons of good benefits tons of good promises of what these things can do but because it's not grounded in proof and promises the proof the promises aren't grounded any kind of credible proof or showing like a before-and-after or demonstrating and logically that this project can do this for this reason based on technology or technical specifications people they get their attention they get their interest but it doesn't convert into them becoming a backer or a buyer right because they believe like it's a little bit too good to be true there has to be something here like I don't I just don't I understand it it looks cool it's awesome but I just don't this surely believe it right so to me in 2020 this is going to be the deciding factor of is your campaign support it or not partly because people have supported campaigns before and they've seen how they don't deliver they've seen how people take time to deliver right they've seen how certain technology is just don't pan out how they're even sometimes some scammers in this industry the more that you can visibly demonstrate credibility in the eyes of a backer the faster they are to make a buying decision the more they're gonna believe what it is that you right and that that credibility can take a lot of different forms and it can obviously be like visual in terms of images and video and showing and demonstrating the products and going to the technical specifications really outlining an emotional and a rational case but that is what's going to be like if you will the the seamless transition from someone discovering you not knowing who you are and to supporting you as a stranger online think about how weird that is that a person who doesn't know you is actually willing to give you money and willing to like buy your product that just seems so strange to me because usually we think that we need to know someone in order for that to happen but clearly that's not true so these kind of hidden elements that go into a campaign are what actually cause that person to be comfortable doing it otherwise they can make sense of the transaction when it comes to the actual Kickstarter campaign or the IndieGoGo campaign one other thing that I would say is as it relates to to this year making use of all the technology that we now have available right so you probably you might not be familiar with things like doing Instagram TV doing Instagram lives setting up an autoresponder email sequence juicing landing pages even using upsells with a post campaign manager like backer kit like these are all just really easy low-hanging fruit that you can incorporate into your project make use of the new technology that comes out all the time new technologies coming out an example of one that's recently a lot of marketers are using is you know text messaging where you can text a word to a phone number and you can get almost an autoresponder sequence from that there's so many new ways that technology is enabling crowdfunding to become that much easier even just simple things like I'm a filming toolkit right so these are these are just very simple low-hanging fruits that I think can just incorporate anything like for example an upsell or an add-on boost the revenue and the upside that you have from a campaign it's literally a no-brainer using things just like early bird rewards I can't tell you the number of campaigns I go to that aren't even using limited quantity reward tiers or aren't using them properly right this is this is so easy to do that it's almost like I don't understand a lot of times why people don't incorporate this into their project so related to this you think of an economy right over time the reason why the economy grows number one is because we're producing more and more goods and services right if you have a factory and first of all there's one loom there's one loom that's making yarn or making cotton transforming cotton and and it's making this byproduct right you have one of these looms and then you have another one then you have another one they have no own eventually you're gonna have so many that the factory floor is going to be full you're no longer gonna be able to make wool right from from these these machines because the factory floor is full but at that point in time what causes further jumps in productivity it's technology the more highly advanced you become and have more technology in society the more we are able to be productive so now those looms was 20 looms I fit in that room they now replace them with a more efficient one and it can maybe double output by 2x right the only way you begin to be more productive is by having higher levels of technology this is a very common concept in economics but as it results to an entrepreneur and as an as a business owner you actually have to use that technology in order to realize those gains so if you're not using these these tools available to you even simple ones like Instagram Live or Instagram TV you are putting out you know videos and being able to track how long people are watching those videos based on YouTube audience retention or your Vimeo player you know whatever it is using these tools is what's going to power up your campaign and make it so that you were competing at the same level as those other people that are out there when it comes to your crowdfunding campaign what's the other thing that's going to make a huge difference aside from just the sheer amount of resources you have or the technology that you have powering this campaign the people the human resources that are going into this project so the the team that you have assembled is going to make a massive difference in are you successful with this crowdfunding campaign or not and assembling that team I think is another major thing that distinguishes campaigns nowadays from when we were first getting started and it was just kind of the the individual or the creator running the campaign and wearing all these hats like marketing sales customer service making the page designing the prototype etc like they were wearing all these hats nowadays you can actually have a team of people that are working with you in order to get this thing out there and in order to be successful with a Kickstarter or an IndieGoGo campaign so the more that you can delegate and be a leader for this team and assemble a high quality team of people around you the more likely you are to be successful I think in this year because you're going to be competing with other people who do have teams around if that makes any kind of sense the final thing that I want to say here when it comes to this year and as it relates to crowdfunding because I have a lot of other videos out there on Kickstarter IndieGoGo how to raise funds some of the tricks that are out there and specifically if you're trying to do this and you know try and raise like six figures and beyond I have a lot of great videos out there in my channel that I urge you to dive into what it comes like the basics of doing this but as it relates to to this year I think a major difference that we're gonna see is really vamped up design and by design I mean not only of the projects but also the project pages right when you were just getting started you could just have lots of text and describe what you're doing and like use very simple basic editing to have a design page but nowadays you look at the campaign pages and they're visually beautiful so incredible laid out selling each step of the way the promises that Ben it's you know the drawbacks why it is the objection you might have like it's really visually very appealing and I think we're going to continue to see that we're almost a campaign page is like a website to be honest and this isn't built into the the editor right this isn't built into the Kickstarter editor it's not really very well at all built into the IndieGoGo campaign page editor this is based on having a designer design these different elements so that you have a unique look and feel with your project and also of course adds to the credibility I think we're gonna see a lot more campaign as campaigns that are launched and I have a very high quality design standard as it relates to the page so I hope that some of these takeaways are useful for you give me a thumbs up if you'd like this video and I will see you next time
