hello strongman friends thank you for clicking on this video i wanted to start talking about my experiences in strongman as a woman especially as a lightweight athlete and it'll probably grow into other things um but i have already made a couple of other videos before and i just haven't gotten around to editing them so this might be a little bit more freeform just so i can get it out because i have a lot of things to say and i think maybe it could help people hopefully it does i get um dms from people on instagram and some messages on facebook for advice so i think i just wanted to create a youtube and maybe hope help some people men as well maybe that could help them so this video was inspired from two encounters that i had recently so it's fresh on my mind um so one of them was through instagram someone had messaged me and said that they were getting into a strong man they were power lifter but mostly bodybuilder and so they wanted tips on how to make that transition um and so that was one and then another experience was at the gym i was speaking with someone and he had mentioned you know uh that i should gain weight as far as like muscle i should gain muscle mass that i would look good that way and i shouldn't be you know in any way perturbed from doing that um and internally my mind was going into like a spin because that's exactly what i'm there for is to gain muscle mass and this specific encounter happened you know in the weight room i wasn't on a cardio machine or anything like that they don't seem maybe congruent but i think it's interesting because the the person who had messaged me on instagram um had an interesting um you know problem because her boyfriend was so into strong man and she felt you know she didn't know how to do a transition between the two and my stance there is you know they're they're totally different pursuits right so i think mostly bodybuilding maybe not powerlifting but definitely bodybuilding is very aesthetic in nature whereas strong man is very strength oriented both mental and physical right so it's a completely different idea i think um bodybuilding there is obviously strength involved you're trying to gain muscle mass but it's it's not for strength per se it's for um more developed muscle not like how much can you deadlift kind of thing um so it seems to me that there's there's so bad pig piggy backing off this idea excuse me is that i think um for me personally it feels that there's an identity politics that's involved maybe not politics but like your gender and identity of your gender is usually called into question in the gym so what i mean by that is you know as a woman i feel that i am kind of constrained by gender norms and this isn't anyone's fault in particular it's just how it is i feel that on the one hand i would like to gain muscle mass but in a way that is feminine um so i want to be i have to be in a caloric surplus but only to the degree that it doesn't i don't gain fat tissue as much as i do muscle mass and that's kind of where my um personal issue came with with talking to that guy at the gym um because i'm in a situation where i'm trying to i'm taking care of my body but i'm trying not to be in a deficit but i'm also trying not to gain too much fat because i'm trying to balance both of these ideas they're kind of competing with one another but they're there i hope all of this is making sense so far so we have gender the idea that um i'm sure i'm not the only one but as a woman i feel that i need to be a certain like i have to obtain a certain figure to be attractive but i also have other endeavors of well i just want to be strong which doesn't necessitate aesthetics so i think uh just generally there's an issue that we're having with gender currently i mean obviously we know that we're talking about that probably all the time um but i'm not trying to make this political um it's just kind of a state that we're in it's kind of a fact i was listening to for those of you don't know i really like um egyptology and ancient egyptian mythology so i was listening to an egyptian podcast and they were talking about akhenaten and it just kind of reified this idea so um akhenaten was amino tepe the fourth previously before he became akhenaten pharaoh of egypt in the 18th century and of course we know that he kind of wanted to supplant the idea of polytheism with monotheism that autin the sun god was the sole ruler but that the other gods were just manifestations of the same god uh what's interesting about auten is that he said you know everything that you've understood previously isn't exactly the truth or is the case i am the only one with that information and um only through me can you actually understand the realities of our god and thus the universe so he ends up making a temple um in the alamarna city city of la marna and it's actually an open court so this is interesting because temples previously were always closed it was very much about darkness only a few people can go in at all if you're a priest or if you're a pharaoh if you were of means you can go to the temples but if you weren't you had no right to participate in worship um in the temples so this was kind of allowing everyone to be a participant of antin um you can be directly in the light of their god of vatin um so he's trying to reestablish a new order he's trying to take away you know ideologies of the past not only take away but completely dismantle them and reconfigure them into something new the reason why this doesn't end up working is because it's not um you know to the interests of everyone involved it makes everything a little bit ambiguous no one quite understands where they belong in the universe anymore because he didn't actually clarify any of that and that's kind of where i feel we are currently is we don't have clear ideas of who we are individually and within our own gender male female you know x all the way down right so i just i think moving forward and when we're interacting with one another um number one if someone male or female or whoever you're speaking to is saying something that's hurtful for you in some way that it's connected to your gender like how you're trying to become in the world and fully integrate yourself that is related to your aesthetic um and your identity maybe try and as difficult as it is try talking to that person and like ask further what do they mean so that gentleman at the gym i wasn't necessarily offended it just kind of brought up a lot of issues i've had with people in the past they keep telling me i need to eat more i'm not eating enough um for the goals that i've had but then i've also had people you know who say you know you don't look as feminine or you know whatever it usually goes both ways so i feel like i can never fulfill kind of the thing that i'm they're projecting upon me um but yeah so i think if you're encountering this you should have try to have the confidence to say well you know what do you what do you mean by that and have a discussion over it right so in this case i could have said something like well you know more muscle that's that's kind of and i actually did i tell i told him this that i am working on gaining more muscle but i didn't let him know all the intricacies of of my own state right that i have these other variables that i'm kind of trying to move through um and i you know i would love it if men would be a little bit more open who feel that way i think this is the so this is the opposite spectrum um i think a lot of women who go to the gym and who are really putting on muscle mass don't often experience this right because i think um or maybe they do and people don't talk about it um so women who are slight like me i feel building mass muscle mass comes a little bit more it takes more time i think it takes more time just generally to build muscle anyway um so larger guys at the gym you know you if you approach them and ask them how long it took you to get to your size how did you get to 315 pounds or whatever they're not gonna say a year so same is true for women if a woman starts at you know going to the gym regularly and is trying to grow it's gonna probably take her longer right we just know that women will take longer to build muscle than men will for various reasons mostly obviously they you know it's harder for women to do that um and then there's the other side of the spectrum i think a lot of a lot more women are encountering who have been in the gym for a long enough period of time where they've gained a lot of muscle mass and um you know the there's an instagram uh account you look like or yeah you look like a man in which women um are told they look like men and because these men have certain ideas about gender mostly secondary characteristics right so what they look like not their sexual organs but their their shape make them seem more masculine than feminine and so they are directly attributing those preconceived notions onto women and obviously normally not in a very you know couf manner they're not couf mostly and you can go to the page and kind of see what i mean and if you're listening to this injured woman or watching this and you're a woman you you may have already encountered that so i don't have to tell you um but this isn't something i've personally gone through yet but i imagine in the future i probably will and i'm not sure but so people who are on that and i know it obviously is unnerving for women who encounter men who say this and it is normally men and women on this it's not normally someone in between right or vice versa normally there are women on on the you look like a man kind of side i think um what was i gonna say i think so if you're on that spectrum and yes it's difficult to actually have an uh an engaging conversation with these people i do think men who are of this idea you i have this idea of what it means to be a woman and i think you should fulfill that but you're not so i'm going to say things that are i probably wouldn't say in person i'm going to say them on the internet because i'm protected and and you know make you feel ashamed for the hard work you've done those people are jordan peterson talks about this um but uh those men are threatened because we don't have those clear lines that we had in the before so going back to argent the reason why i brought him up is because we had like this pre-established um order when it comes to gender so deeply embedded in our society we had you know men do x and then women do y and then this is a structure of society and this just is how it works um now we're in a little bit where we are in a amorphous society where now gender isn't it's it's not demarcated that way anymore a woman can obviously go work and a man can stay at home or neither you can do whatever you want and alan watts talks about how you know this will contribute to nihilism in the world which isn't a bad thing so saying that there is no meaning in our society that's kind of what it means right so we don't have these um structures like we once had so there's not a lot of meaning we can our own meaning and just um which is which i think is freeing but it's it's terrifying because now you have to put forth the effort to find out who you are and um not be ashamed of that and be confident in it some people find it threatening to realize that that's kind of the state we're in who don't want that to be the case there are people who would rather go back to all i loved it so much when i understood where i stood in society i i comprehended it it was clear um but you know that is the state and i think if we're going to continue to survive if we can get past like how and it's funny because akhenaten was vouching for monotheism but we had a very monolithic social structure right as far as gender is concerned but now it is polytheistic on a wide variety of levels and that is it's hard it's really difficult but i think i really believe in conversation open conversation i don't believe in cancelled culture i just don't i don't think you should completely eliminate the other side because there's there are people right the the men who maybe i say mostly men it's not completely men and it's not all men but those who say women who look like men um i think it's best to have open a conversation with them if possible it's not always going to be possible but they're people and that honestly that conversation is best had in person and not over the internet and then just you know trying to take them to the gallows isn't it's not going to further your cause in my opinion um because that's not how a productive society works i think so i guess what i'm trying to say is as a woman if you're trying to go in a strong man or if you're trying to pursue strength generally these interactions are going to happen all the time and if you would prefer to stick with bodybuilding as an aesthetic then that's absolutely your choice and i encourage any kind of form of activity that interests you in my personal opinion strongman or strength based training is one of the best ways to go um if you're going to a gym so if you're swimming that's completely different doing sports completely different but if you're in the gym i would say strength is more of a realistic pursuit only in the fact that you have the weights to tell you the weights are the ones that are telling you if you're making progress it's not you know how large are your glutes compared to your i don't know calves and however bodybuilding works it's not subjective it's very objective can i carry this sandbag 220 pound sandbag 50 feet and beat my opponent in the you know allotted time so yeah if you're looking to get in the strength you're a woman go for it um pursue what makes you happy let's have open conversations um let's you know realize other people are just people and maybe make less assumptions and just try to talk to one another so thank you for listening i hope all this makes sense um we can have a further conversation down below if you'd like to just let me know what you think about all of this i just wanted to get it out there it was kind of bothering me so there it is have a good day bye
