Adapt zip code text
hi I'm Ted today I'm going to show you how to extract the zip code in Excel with a formula I have a spreadsheet here that has several addresses and they're all they all start with the full address all in one cell all in text format and that that's a key to working the way I'm going to describe it is that you're assuming that the zip code is going to come from the last part of an address that's all one text item in in a cell so the formula we're going to use is a text formula called write RA ght so we in this column here we're going to start entering a formula we're going to say equals and then write righ T and as you can see Excel is starting to populate the the formula with a formulate recognizes which is always a good sign and then we type the left print parenthesis and then enter in the cell that has the contents of the address and then since we want the five characters at the right side of the text we'd say comma and the second argument of the function is is five because we want five characters close parenthesis and hit return and sure enough there we go the zip code is one double O two eight and just as in any excel formula we can take select on that cell and drag it down to populate the other ones although here's a little trick if you didn't know if you go to the bottom right and just go clickety click it automatically goes and populates all of the cells up until just before there's a blank line now as you can see I have the same addresses down here only this time with the nine digit zip codes so I'm sure you've probably figured out already that to do that all we need to do is put in the same formula only there's going to be five characters plus the - plus the four additional digits for a total of ten characters so we're going to option copy at least in a Mac option copy we'll drag this formula down here and we're now instead of the five here we're going to put a 10 in this formula and that will extract the ten characters at the right of the formula which is the nine digit zip code code and we'll do the same thing go to the right bottom of the cell clickety click and there we have the nine digit zip code I hope this has been useful I'm Ted and today I showed you how to extract zip code from a fort with a formula in Excel thank you for watching
