chicago right now police working to find the gunman who opened fire here in irving park and shot up this church a church hit by gunfire and cars riddled with bullets in the irving park neighborhood neighbors waking up to the sound of dozens of gunshots around two o'clock this morning we were asleep and all of a sudden we heard rapid gunfire maybe like 20 or 30 shots right outside our house so we kind of hit the floor a few people peeked out of their windows to see a man armed with a gun standing in the middle of the road witnesses say he was shooting down the street in the 4000 block of north troy walking down the street here firing down that way you know randomly with probably a car the guy here that was shooting started yelling but we couldn't understand the word he says neighbors say the exchange of gunfire damaged their property and now has many on edge rapid gunfire and it was you know scary to be just within feet of your house and to hear the crack of the gun and the voices of the shooters yelling this shooting scene one of several across the city but others now homicide cases overnight to party in the city's austin neighborhood turned deadly police say a man pulled out a gun during an argument and opened fire in the 100 block of north pine five people were shot two died as the celestial church of christ cleans up neighbors now working to fix the damage two have windows that were blown out so they're getting fixed right now we have 10 holes all together in the cars just thankful no one was hurt now surveillance cameras were rolling at the time of this you chicago police firing shots after coming under fire themselves this happened at 115th and south wentworth that's in the west pullman neighborhood and it happened this morning police responding after someone reported gunshots and they say a 49-year-old man started firing at police officers fired back and no one was hurt the swat team then came in and the man is now at the hospital for a mental health evaluation copa is investigating the shooting an illinois state trooper was hurt late last night when he was hit by a driver trying to flee a traffic stop on chicago's south side the driver then hit several vehicles on state street near 76th before he was able to run off the trooper will be okay well checking the weather tonight it's kind of gloomy out there so the question is when can we expect some changes on this there's phil schwartz standing by right now with our abc 7 accuweather forecast phil yeah ravi and karen a totally different sort of day tomorrow finally we're going to get a break from the rain you can see live doppler 7 max showing most of the significant rain now east of i-65 still a few light showers or drizzle though possible throughout the night tonight here's estimated rainfall you can see most of the areas in the that light green color that that gives us an idea that most of us had less than half an inch of rain ottawa you're one of the exceptions with a little over half an inch naperville and elmhurst right around a third of an inch and about a quarter inch in northbrook and over in highland we're done with most of the rain there could be a shower overnight and look at that dew point sitting at 68 degrees so there's still plenty of moisture in the atmosphere as the front is not through yet 70 in lombard 70 in crete merrillville you're sitting at 71 and 70 right now in westville a broader view shows where the warmer area is down towards indianapolis there is a front between here and there and that front could bring those folks some pretty good showers and storms as that rain-cooled air moves eastward for us most of the showers will be out of here by four or five o'clock in the morning you can see our futurecast shows how we'll still have overcast skies to start your day tomorrow temperatures starting around 60. there are some of those light showers possible between 4 and 5 6 a.m in the morning but look at the afternoon into the mid 70s a fair amount of sunshine and then as we head into monday there will be a little bit of a lake breeze but still a good amount of sunshine with temperatures getting into the low to mid 70s once again on monday so we got at least some sunshine in the forecast a few showers still possible tonight lows around 60. look at those highs tomorrow one of the mildest days we've seen in about a week with highs getting into the mid 70s clearing and warmer a little bit of a lake breeze will develop making it a few degrees cooler near the lakefront here's the seven-day outlook and after all the clouds and rain this week it's going to be a nice change back to the upper 70's to lower 80's tuesday and wednesday next chance for any significant rain after tonight won't come until about thursday and even then we're talking about a high temperature right around 80 degrees karen and ravi all right phil thanks very much summer is still hanging around a little bit and right now more than 800 nurses at the university of illinois hospital in chicago are on strike they walked off the job this morning and they have been rallying outside of the hospital our jesse kirsch spoke to the union president tonight hundreds of chicago nurses on strike after more than 20 bargaining sessions with university of illinois hospital this morning the illinois nurses association walking off the job demanding a cap on how many patients a nurse treats at any given time daycare operators have ratios right you can't have more than eight or nine infants dog kennels have ratios why can't hospitals have ratios ina president doris carroll acknowledges the union proposal would require more full-time nurses but she argues that's what's needed having adequate nurses at the bedside will prevent falls will prevent infection will prevent death in a hospital mind you the hospital contends ratios do not work in a statement the university of illinois hospital's ceo says he values and respects these nurses work but argues ratios ignore fair workload distribution among peers on a shift-to-shift basis the ceo adding nurse staffing ratios also result in longer emergency department wait times increased ambulance diversion hours reduced patient services and higher operating costs in all the union says more than 800 nurses are on strike that number originally would have been around 1300 according to the union but a judge granted a temporary restraining order after the hospital filed a lawsuit the hospital applauding the decision which it says keeps specialized critical care nurses at work they can't find nurses with our expertise so they force them to cross the picket line especially during a pandemic you should not have to be forced to work unreasonable workshops that put your lives at risk while you save the lives of our loved ones despite this weather the union president telling me nurses will be out here on the picket line until 10 o'clock tonight and will be back here at 7 a.m tomorrow morning from the near west side jesse kirsch abc 7 eyewitness news and now to the latest on covet 19 in illinois the state health department
