you one of the unique characteristics of Forex is the fact that it is a global marketplace comprised of multiple separate markets all under one roof each currency is a market in its own right representing the economy of that particular country and the value of each currency is affected by things like interest rates and inflation the number of imports and exports economic growth how much foreign investment is being made etc in total there are 185 different currencies but 86% of all volume is concentrated on just these eight majors which are what retail traders are most interested in and just those eight can be combined into 28 different pair charts so when you match the Euro against the US dollar that's one pair the Euro against the pound is another and so on and what happens on a chart obviously depends on what's happening to the individual currencies so let's quickly look at some possible scenarios that might happen the Euro may be going up in value and the US dollar is neutral going sideways in that case the pair chart will have a small trend as the two currencies do diverge if the Euro was going up in value and so was the US dollar but to a smaller extent there would still be a small trend on the chart because the currencies are diverging at different rates but obviously this is gonna be to a lesser degree so the trend would be much smaller than in the previous example the chart would even have an uptrend if the Euro was neutral but the US dollar was going down and even if the euro was actually going down as long as the US dollar was even weaker as long as there is a difference between the two currencies and they change different rates there will be some movement on the chart whereas if both currencies would do in the same thing be that going up sideways or down the pair chart wouldn't be going anyway clearly the ideal situation is for the currencies to be doing the opposite to each other with one going up and the other one going down that's the condition that will produce the biggest trend on the PA chart because the rate of change between each currency diverging in opposite directions is most exaggerated and this is really a crucial point about trading currency pairs in forex when you place a trade on a pair like the euro US dollar you are always buying one currency and selling the other a peer chart is not a real thing or an instrument like gold or a stock so you can't buy the euro US dollar if you place a buy trade you're buying the euro and sell in the US dollar a sell trade would mean that you are selling the euro and buying the US dollar and from a speculators point of view if you buy something you're expecting it to...
