hello this is dr. grande welcome to my video on setting a default value for a text box using Microsoft Excel as always if you find this video useful please like it and subscribe to my channel I certainly appreciate it I have here in this data worksheet fictitious data that I'll be using for this example and I have four variables here participants GPA final exam and date associated with this orange rectangle here to the right I have a user form I click on this it brings up this user form and I can enter data into these three text boxes and they correspond to the variables I have well in the worksheet so if I select cell b7 and open this user form and for this example say the GPA is 2.7 the final exam score 60 and I'll use the date 120 117 and click enter close this those values now appear on the worksheet so let's say that we have with this particular final exam a certain final exam score that is fairly common so we want to make that a default value say 40% or more the participants have the same final exam score so you want that to come up automatically to save keystrokes and we are putting this information in the GPA and file exam 1 today's date so we want today's date to show up automatically in that third text box so let's move over to the code view alt f11 will bring up the visual basic editor I'll move to the user form here is user form 1 so for the first text box that's GPA so I'm not going to make any changes to that for the second one and this one we want to have a final exam score appear every time by default now we can still change it in the user forum how everyone to come up when the user forum initializes so there are a few ways to do this first with this textbox - let's use the final exam score of 80 so I selected text box - and I can just type the value 80 and if I go back to the worksheet view and open user forum 80 appears by default and of course I can change it here for example to 70 so it can be modified but it's going to come up as 80 by default going back to the code view you can see here with this value of 80 populated in text box to the text property on the bottom left here is set to 80 so we can also just make that change here under properties and text the value property is also set to 80 so using GPA I want to set a default GPA to 3.1 for example I could go to value enter a three point one it's going to automatically change text to three point one and again if I go back to the worksheet three point one is the default value so moving back here to the userform I'm going to set GPA back to empty so I'm going to delete 3.1 from text and I'll leave 84 text box - what about the date so text box 3 is the date and let's say that we want the default date to be today well I'm going to use a subroutine for this and I already have a subroutine set up when the userform initializes so that's down here sub userform initialize I have the three labels populating with the variable names directly from the worksheet so they're dynamic I can change the captions of the labels on the worksheet and they'll come up on the user forum so I'm going to add on to this code for Xbox 360 ox-3 dot value equals date so if I move back to the worksheet view now open user form use the GPA 2.8 the final exam is already populated to the default value of 80 and a date is set for today's date so if I click Anna close this I have the value 2.8 for GPA that default final exam value of 80 and then today's date moving back to the visual basic editor I'll show you some different things we can do here with the date value for example if we want yesterday's date to appear as the default value instead of today it would be date minus 1 we move over open up this user form announce 120 2017 similarly if we want this to be dated for tomorrow would be date plus one or one week ago it would be date minus seven and for a week from now date plus seven so you have those options available for setting a date as well as many others by modifying this line of code I hope you found this video on setting default values for text boxes in Excel to be useful and thanks for watching
