[Music] hello guys and welcome to another one of my little videos in today's video i'm gonna show you uh how i work on a shot from the empire strikes back and you might be surprised that i'm working on empire when i said that i would be waiting for 4k 80 to be finished before i start working on it but actually i watched all the star wars films with my girlfriend over the holidays and i realized that the only film that's actually currently missing a decent original version is empire so it's more important to do that uh i don't know how far along 4k 80 is but i'm i'm gonna concentrate on empire for now and i wanted to say that uh i'm sorry this is all taking so long but uh when you think about it it takes me at least a few hours to finish any given shot there's like 600 shots to do some take days some might take one or two hours if they're really easy but what it amounts to is that even if i worked on the specialized every single night which i just can't it's impossible uh it would still take like two years to finish so this is uh that's why it's taking so long now let's have a look at this shot so the shot i'm talking about is this one in the special edition this shot that's one shot in the original was cut in half and a shot of the wampa was inserted into it and in the process they cut out a couple of frames on each end so there's four frames missing in the middle of the shot so um the obvious way to go about this would uh be to just replace those frames with another source but even with a fairly decent 35 millimeter source uh it's just too different than the quality is too noticeably lower uh for it to actually work to just cut in the frames or sort of like blend in and out or something as you can see the 35 millimeter source just has less detail and it's kind of blown out in this area and uh while i tried to get the the colors relatively close when i was exporting them it's they're still way different so what i decided to do instead was to try to recreate those frames as much as possible from the actual 4k source so the first thing i did was to track the footage and stabilize it you probably can't even see any movement but when you zoom in quite a bit you can see that the plate is actually moving around a little oh so that's what the tracking and stabilization is for and then i went ahead and chose a few frames where luke is in different positions in order to create a clean plate where i removed luke from the shot as much as possible from there i went to the 35 millimeter source again stabilized it so that it would not move around obviously the 35 millimeter source moves around even more than the blu-ray source then i resized it to fit with the 4k footage and then i used something that's relatively new to [Music] the last couple of versions of nuke and that's smart vectors what this node or function does in layman's terms is it analyzes the movement of a shot and then it's able to transfer the same movement to another image it's usually used for putting textures and matte paintings on moving subjects that change that are changing shapes like clothes for example or skin so for example in this shot that i did for a friend's student film i was able to take this plate have smart vector analyze it and then i was able to take this blood plate and put it over the footage like this what i did in this case was take the last frame of the 4k before the cut and the first frame after the cut and i applied these vectors to those frames so that it copies the movement from the 35 millimeter as you can see it's not perfect but it can be used on luke as long as he's separated from the background and because i did this forwards and backwards i have two different versions copying the movement from two different directions so for example as you can see here because luke's face is hidden behind his hand here and then it moves out it just stretches those pixels but because here it goes in the other direction the information is still there although there's also some artifacts that need to be taken care of for fixes like this i would later use bits of the 35 millimeter source so now that i have this i actually keyed luke out of the original plate in order to be able to have a semi-transparent background that i could put over my clean plate that i created and then here i was able to mix together the two different frames with movement in opposite directions added to it to them uh which gave me a fairly decent result and then i was able to apply this over my [Music] clean plate background and then i uh replaced the parts that didn't work like this scarf here and bits of luke's face with the 35 millimeter source which i uh tried to color correct as close as possible to the 4k source to make it all match then in the end i put an inverted tracker on the final result to get the subtle movement back on the background this is only the first version so i might try and make some further
