while waiting for the results of the initial screening process of the jet philippines 2021 i think it will help you a lot actually it gives you an advantage if you'll be preparing as early as now your possible demo topic or your demo lesson in case you'll be invited to advance for the next level of the screening in this video i'm going to share some tips in choosing your demo lesson topics in writing your demo lesson plan as well as in doing your demonstration teaching i also hope to give you a bit of information or idea on the level of english language that is taught in the elementary school and in the junior high school based on my experience and observations to start with know that english also called the foreign language subject or guy kokugo is not actually a required or a compulsory subject in the elementary school until recently english only began to be included in the fifth and sixth grade elementary school curriculum this school year so evaluation ratings are necessary at my elementary school placements grades 1 and 2 only get to study english once per semester sorry once per term that is three times the entire school year grades three and four have a once a week english that is 35 hours for the entire school year while grades five and six have um two hours per week that is a total of 70 hours for the entire school year in my elementary school once a week i get to teach the fifth and the sixth grade while the other half or the other session is handled by junior high school english teachers for the junior high school english is one of the major subjects that is being taught four times a week however i only get to teach each grade level only once a week prior to my jet program participation i somehow already had the idea on the level of english language that is taught in japanese schools because i have had observed actual english classes at japanese schools several times in the past when i had the opportunity to to come to japan for immersion and training programs so special thanks to the japan foundation for giving me those opportunities so gauging from the lessons taught in those class observations i thought that the levels of the elementary and junior high school english are much lower than what are taught in the senior high school so when i was invited to have a demo teaching for the jet program i chose a demo lesson that is adjusted to the level of the japanese students so i came up with a simple common and proper nouns lesson which later i found out that it's not actually taught here in in junior high school and in the elementary school level not even the terms or the english terms for the parts of speech tip number two since jet is a teaching and exchange program why don't you try to incorporate or introduce philippines in your lesson it's not a must though but i think it's a good start for you to to practice doing the exchange part or exchange aspect of of your role as an alt anyways you'll have some opportunities to do so once you get accepted in the program but then again it's it's up to your uh jte or your japanese teacher of english partner or what we call in kobe the official teacher of english partner if they allow you or if they give you the chance to to do that in your lesson again it doesn't need to be the whole period or like 20 or 30 minutes you can you can actually do this you can actually um try to incorporate things or stuff about the philippines in your in just your examples sample sentences or some words or vocabulary that you introduce to the students tip number three there's no given template or format for the lesson plan that you will that you need to submit to the screening committee not even the procedure for your teaching or the level of lesson that you that you must give so feel free to use or to follow the format that you are comfortable using or following my lesson plan before was a simple semi-detailed lesson plan so don't be pressured with like am i doing am i following the correct format of a lesson plan or is it enough so yeah just don't mind those during the demo teaching you will only have like five minutes or ten minutes in presenting the the entire lesson so it's impossible to you know to finish from from the start to the last part of your prepared lesson plan anyway the screening committee will be asking for a copy of the lesson plan beforehand either the panel will just ask you to proceed to the lesson proper or they might ask you to start with step one or procedure number one and then touch a little or a portion of all the other parts of your lesson so again it depends on how the panel wants you to to deliver your planned procedure which leads to my tip number four familiarize yourself with your lesson plan so again the members of the panel might be asking you to jump from one portion to another or as you deliver your lesson they might be asking you about your plan procedures or why you you thought of including the stuff that you included in your lesson plan so um again it is safe that you you really know your purpose or your reason why you included such stuff or such parts of your lesson and why you chose for example those words or those sentences those selections everything about your lesson plan tip number five treat your 5 to 10 minute demo teaching as a full length actual classroom teaching with these i mean you have to prepare all the necessary materials for your planned lesson from worksheets if you have uh visual aids audio materials movie clips like as if you are teaching i mean you are doing a demo teaching for 45 minutes to 50 minutes or one hour class again the panel might become interested in your procedure or in your activities so it's better to get to be prepared and yeah just be ready to show them and anything that they might be asking you to to show them or to provide them during your demo teaching so it's you know it's also an opportunity it's it's a good chance for for you to show the panel what kind of fun or or interesting activities you might be introducing your future students once you get accepted for the program tip number six prepare and practice the demo teaching is one of the main requirements i suppose and i strongly believe this for you to get accepted i mean to advance to the next level of the screening process this might make or break your hopes or your chances of being shortlisted for the 2021 batch from the philippines so it is a must that you plan and prepare very well if you're not satisfied with your own lesson plan you might want to ask for opinions for comments or suggestions from your friends or from your from your teachers or any anybody else who is willing to you know to help you improve your planned lesson and then practice the flow of your lesson if you can have some someone or some friends or you know pinsand to to act as your students and do a role play with them just to get the feel of how your lesson would be like you can monologue playing both the role of the teacher and the students so mas maganda dancing tip number seven get ready with backups since this year's stage two of the screening process is to be done online i'm 99.9 sure that the demo teaching is also done or will also be done online but then again i think the screening committee would still ask you to submit a copy of your lesson plan as well as um your powerpoint presentation if you'll be using any and some other things that may they might be asking you to to submit so whatever things that they'll be asking you are they'll be requiring you to submit and then whichever way you're you'll be presenting your demo lesson i suggest that you make backups of the files and materials that you will be using in case other technology fails you if you're using slides print them out or manually write them if you're using a song or a background music save the file in your computer and then save it in your phone and save it also in in flash drives and of course prepare a cd player if you're using a movie or a video clip again check your video player and then save not only in one location but also try saving it in some other portable drives and of course you can also try to you can also print out uh picture cards and then prepare for a short script or s um summary of the video clip that you plan to to use you wouldn't want to be rattled when whenever technical difficulties happen right so again in preparing for your demo teaching for chat remember go for simple beginner level lessons try to integrate philippines and philippine culture in your lesson use the lesson plan format you are comfortable using with familiarize yourself with your lesson plan treat your demo teaching as a full-length classroom teaching prepare and practice and have backups just a disclaimer all these tips are just suggestions it is still up to you it is still up to your discretion whether you take them or you ignore them at the end of the day it is you yourself who knows your own capabilities and limitations more than anybody else so may the odds be all to your favor do that's all for today i'll see you again next time adios you
