well today is national plan for a vacation day so guess what we're doing we're gonna plan for a vacation well i'm on one i'm sitting here at a campground so if you should hear dogs barking or kids screaming that's just part of the ambiance i want to talk to you about the nuts and bolts of how to do that as part of this national campaign that happens every january on the last tuesday of the the emphasis now we already know that wherever we go we have to take our mass and our hand sanitizer we have to be prepared to stay six feet apart and there are some states that are limiting the travel that they're suggesting 120 miles or less doesn't seem like that far but i was wrong let me get this map out because we're going to talk about the nuts and bolts of how to plan your travel your vacation road trip or just want to plan that quick weekend that's standing behind my car the girls and i've got these cheap tickets to lastic basically the weekend i'm trying to be quiet so i don't speak him starting here in abingdon virginia from 120 miles i drew a city circle as far as what that looked like so it will get me almost to roanoke virginia from abington that's about 130 miles away within your route and the points of interest that are appealing to you now this is a good exercise even if you're not working in parameters and you're just using this to estimate gas costs later here's what i found out i can hit virginia kentucky tennessee or north carolina cumberland gap national park hickory north carolina knoxville tennessee perry county kentucky so then what do i do is look at the travel restrictions check the cdc website check the state websites find out what the restrictions are because i don't have a problem in these states necessarily but some states want you to quarantine for two weeks once you get within their borders so obviously that's going to impact where you go so always check that make sure you know the current local guidelines because you need that and once you have that out of the way take your list sit down with your family get the kids involved get the hubs involved find out what's on your list that they're going to enjoy doing because you're going to have a much better vacation if the whole family is involved in the planning process all right so you're not really sure i get that that's where other information comes in so yes websites are great you can find out a lot of information about websites but once you have it generally narrowed down you can start asking for information and getting tour books once you're on the road you can pick these up once you get close to your destination so there's all kinds of things you can get visitor guides some states have these trails that you can drive in this case tennessee has a rocky aaa is to me a huge asset they have pulled me out of the fire several times aaa will give you these tour books i'm gonna put a link to aaa below in case you're interested um no sponsorship or anything i just love my triple-a membership so where do you get the information well i already talked about triple-a and we've already talked about online but when you contact tourism bureaus for the place that you want to go and planning ahead will let you do this anytime you're planning ahead for your trip you can contact them for information like this guide of northeast tennessee since i'm in southwest virginia and it borders northeast tennessee i thought i would check it out they sent this to me for free um took about two weeks to get there and as the name says it's all about northeast tennessee so in the center of it is a map very very helpful so i was looking at this and going over it with my husband trying to nail down some destinations and one of the things that caught my eye was the town of gatlinburg tennessee now i'm not on the restrictions but gatlinburg is about 150 miles from where i am in abington so then you can contact the tourism center for gatlinburg or whatever state you're going to and you know if they don't have a tourism center check the chamber of commerce huge resources okay gatlinburg sent this and i haven't opened it yet as you can tell if you've ever ordered or checked into this let me know leave that down in the comments below and so now i have a nice book about calendar and inside is lots of information on things to do and see there's advertising from some of the hotels that are there works of wonders so the arts and crafts that they have fascinating another listing of restaurants wineries distilleries just all kinds of things now also in this they included some brochures from attractions in the town and to get this all you have to do is contact the tourism department for where you want to go and they will send this information pretty cool hi all free all free so look at the restrictions um get your mask and your hand sanitizer get your travel information together get the kids involved find out what they liked and what what they like to do and then from that point you can start looking at your attractions and planning your budget now we're going to do a whole thing coming up soon on how to save up money for a vacation and how to budget for a vacation and you want to get with your boss from work and find out when you can go so your calendar is going to come in critically but don't forget to make pet arrangements and get their favorite treats when you're trip planning a trip to the doctor might be in order if you have chronic health conditions that way you can make sure you have refills on all of your medications and everything set up always take more medication than you think you're going to need don't just plan for the set number of days that you're going to be gone because if something happens out of your control and you have to spend an extra day or two out the last thing you want to do is try to track down medication refills for yourself or a family member just a quick recap when you're planning your
