holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all today we hear about jesus's power and authority authority that is used on our behalf and authority especially to forgive us our sins and so we call to mind those sins now lord jesus you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us me will the lord your god raise up for you from among your own kin to him you shall listen this is exactly what you requested of the lord your god at oreb on the day of the assembly when you said let of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters i should like you to be free of anxieties an unmarried man is anxious about the things of the lord how he may please the lord but a married man is anxious about the things of the world how he may please his wife and he is divided an unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the lord so that she may be holy in both body and spirit a married woman on the other hand is anxious about the things of the world how she may please her husband i'm telling you this for your own benefit not to impose a restraint upon you but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the lord without distraction the word of the lord [Music] my sheep hear my voice as the lord [Music] me the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory then they came to capernaum and on the sabbath jesus entered the synagogue and taught the people were astonished at his teaching for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes in their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit he cried out what have you to do with us jesus of nazareth have you come to destroy us i know who you are the holy one of god jesus rebuked him and said quiet come out of him the unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him all were amazed and asked one another what is this a new teaching with authority he commands even the evil spirits and they obey him his fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of galilee the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ in the time of jesus authority was something that was very clearly delineated it was a very hierarchical society and those on top had all the power and authority those on the bottom of course had very little if any but one of the things that that all human beings were vulnerable to and powerless in the face of were these unclean spirits they they could attack anybody um we might today call it you know mental illness or even just sickness of some sort um or maybe possessed by a demon but whatever it was they felt powerless in the face of it it could take over one's life and that life could very well be destroyed and and the the unclean demon held all the cards uh even if someone out of out of compassion or even thinking that he himself or she herself were powerful and would try to confront this this malady in in a certain person would themselves be contaminated because it was something that you could catch and so instead of helping the person you yourself were pulled in to the very reality of the of the evil and the uncleanliness that it it caused so that someone who was troubled by something like this uh was was ostracized was was separated from from everyone else because no one felt up to being able to confront it without themselves being made unclean terrible terrible situation for someone like that until jesus came and what was so amazing about jesus was that his teaching his words were not just words but they were actions he stood up to this unclean spirit with no fear that he himself would become unclean he came into contact with this troubling spirit in this person and he ordered it to get out shut up and get out he says and it does and this was never ever seen before no wonder it's going to cause amazement so we might not look at unclean demons or unclean spirits in exactly the same way they did in the time of jesus but we are familiar are we not with sort of those demons that can trouble us that can enter into our life and seem to take over you know i think of many of our viewers who uh because of the the pandemic had been more than normally isolated in their homes um kind of removed from from a lot of the the contact with friends and loved ones that we all need and all crave and in our isolation it's possible that we can be confronted by or troubled by some of the same demons that that troubled the people of jesus's time fear resentment nurturing hurts of the past refusing to forgive all of those can be called in a sense i think unclean spirits but we have to remember that as long as jesus is part of our life and and that happens as easily as allowing him to be part of our life because that's exactly what he wants to do he only needs our welcoming in order to do that and if he does live in us and with us he has power over all of those things we need not fear the lord is with us [Applause] so let us profess our faith in the apostles creed found on page 34 in your prayer and worship guide i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen to that lord and god who has authority over anything that could possibly trouble us let us offer now both our prayers and needs present here and those present in our viewers at home that religious sisters and brothers anxious about the things of the lord serve the church and the world with holiness of body and spirit we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that victims of violence and war experience the blessings of peace we pray to the lord that school children know the joy of learning in a safe environment we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for teachers administrators and staff for all those who help educate our children and expand their natural curiosity we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer that the sick and those near death feel god's tender concern we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the faithful departed may enjoy the radiant dawn of eternal life we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the needs and prayers of all of our heart of the nation parish members including those joining us from the state of florida we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer loving and almighty god these are the prayers that we offer in confidence through christ our lord amen [Music] do [Music] do [Music] pray now brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice of your hands for the praise and glory of god's name for our good and the good of all his holy church oh lord we bring to your altar these offerings of our service be pleased to receive them we pray and transform them into the sacrament of our redemption through christ our lord amen amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts give them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god he's right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for in you we live and move and have our being and while in this body we not only experience the daily effects of your care but even now possess the pledge of life eternal for having received the first fruits of the spirit through whom you raised up jesus from the dead we hope for an everlasting share in the paschal mystery and so with all the angels we praise you as in joyful celebration we acclaim heaven and earth [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] [Applause] until [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and ministered to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope all of our local bishops the clergy and all of your faithful people remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] let us now pray to our father in confidence the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in
