hello and welcome back to Friday minis today let's talk about something very interesting called a Zippo instead of actually describing it to you why not let's just look at it in action so what we have here is an innocent-looking zip file it is only about four megabytes in size so yes probably pretty innocent probably not destructive at all right so we try and extract it and well it's taking really long to extract for some reason and lo and behold we end up with a text file that is one gigabyte in size this is a particularly contrived example of how a zip bomb works in fact this is not even theoretically a zip bump if we want to be very precise but well you can actually see why posess happen if I were to open a text file in a text editor which will take some time you'll see that in fact it is the same statement repeated over and over again in fact I didn't make this by hand I wrote a Python script that basically just kept writing the same line to a file until I stopped the program and well compression algorithms actually have a pretty good time dealing with data that has many repeats at parts like what you see here and that is why we've managed to actually achieve that much compression when an actual zip bomb is used especially in a malicious context a very similar concept is used by making use of duplication basically you can achieve a relatively small size to archive however when this archive is decompressed it turns into a lot more data than you've expected and basically the whole point of doing this is the cost you know things like virus scanners to basically halt just trying to decompress that one file and of course I'm sure if an unknowing user accidentally tries to decompress such a file they will also get into trouble so a zip bomb does have its destructive ability and that basically wraps up this episode I will not recommend you sends it bombs to your friends even though you basically know how to do that now it is of course considered a malicious attack of some sort and you could get in trouble so don't that's all there is for this episode of Friday minis thank you very much for watching and until next time you're watching 0 6 1 2 TV thank you very much for watching if you like this video consider checking out the rest of my work on my channel alternatively you may be interested in a playlist of all the other episodes of Friday minis if you'd like to show me some monetary support I am on patreon you can find a link to my campaign in the video description of course you can simply like this video or leave a comment I'll be sure to respond as soon as I can to keep in touch with my future uploads do subscribe to this channel and for even more updates check out the official Twitter account for this channel @ 0 6 1 2 TV thank you for your support
