Signatory drama scholarship application

well hi everyone my name is Noah Pittman and I'm the assistant dean of enrollment for the Honors College with the University of Arkansas thank you again for taking time to learn more about the fellowship scholarship application process at the University this presentation will focus on the essay section of the fellowship scholarship application really breaking down each of the prompts and giving you some general tips about writing a college essay and what he should do they stand out in a positive way so let's get into the presentation the first thing is the three prompts we have this year we do have one new prompt for our essay section this year the other two remain the same from previous years but the instructions tell you to write a well-developed essay about 600 words maximum on one of the following prompts now when we say 600 words it's only about two pages double-spaced on a Word document so clear and concise writings we're looking for this word count does not include the citations at the end nor a title it's the actual content of the essay so the three prompts we have one is historians have opted to maintain that it is important to have a gap of 50 years between a long time period in their subject matter identify an invention or an idea that was developed more than 50 years ago this still has a major effect on the way we live today why did you choose this particular invention or idea so that's the first problem second crop which is new this year identify an artist or innovator in the world today who inspires you tell us why and the third prompt is how do you anticipate making a contribution to society with your future career what made you interested in this pursuit so what these three prompts you're just going to choose one I always tell students pick the prompt that you feel most comfortable writing about so don't overthink it don't try to pick the prompt that you think that the Revere reviewers gonna think is more intellectual or is going to be just a better prompt in general and at the end we do tell you to make sure that you are including citations if you're using any type of outside information you can use any type of format for your citations just as long as you're consistent throughout whether it's APA MLA Chicago Manual or maybe another format that you're familiar with so those are the three prompts let's break down each of the prompts that we have for the essay section the first prompt the historians prop where you're looking at an idea or an image 50 years old that still has an impact on the way we live today so what to consider for this prompt one thing is first off goes out saying make sure the invention or idea is more than 50 years old you'd be surprised how many people do not follow this way this instruction in the prompt so that stands out right off the bat you also need to consider this is a persuasive essay not a book report so you're not writing just a summary of the invention of the idea you have to convince the reader of all the things in the world why did you choose this particular invention or idea and why does it have the greatest impact of anything you consider today there's not really a right or wrong answer to this but you have to be able to persuade the reader that you have chosen a compelling subject for this prompt so make sure you're doing that focus on the persuasion not so much just summarizing the invention or the idea you also want to avoid incredibly generic conventions we see lots of essays just about computers or phones unless you have a unique angle to it so what I say that make sure that you're not just giving again a summary by talking about way to waste computers in practice of the average person may not realize or even the same with phones or if you another angle you can do is to actually get a specific computer that was revolutionary for some reason or a specific phone that was a revolutionary that's more than 50 years old so obviously you can't do the iPhone for example but choose something that can have a unique angle to it even if it's an engineering idea that can work but don't hey just so you know we do get a lot of computers and phones essays so take that into account when you're considering what you want to write about you will also definitely need citations for this essay I can't stress that enough I don't think you can write a strong essay for this prompt without using citations that's something I'll notice right off the bat if you write first bio an essay respond to this top topic and you don't have any citations that's a problem we know you're having used some type of outside information to write this essay and you're not citing sources that is a big problem so make sure you're citing sources especially in prompt number one the second prompt the new one this year and gonna be interested to see how this prop goes I didn't find a hardest or innovator in the world today who inspires you tell us why so what are consider for this problem there is no again no right or wrong answer for the individual you choose should be someone who actually inspires you so don't just pick someone you think will impress the reviewer choose someone that you think about pretty often that you consume media from this individual or their arts or you want to read every article in every book you that's possible about a specific innovator it needs to be someone really that inspires you if it's not someone inspired you it's very noticeable in these types of essays like I said earlier this is a persuasive essay not a book report you're not just summarizing the individuals so of all the individuals in the world why did you choose this one you need to persuade the reader why this person is such a great artist or innovator you also one thing I want to note for this essay if you choose a writer is obviously an artist you probably don't choose someone that whose work you discuss in the three work section of the application you're just repeating yourself in a lot of ways whether you realize it or not so if you're picking a writer I would not talk about any of their works in three work section with a college application you always want to be adding to the application and demonstrating intellectual curiosity if you keep repeating yourself in the application talking about the same writer over and over again and you're not really adding to the application you're not really demonstrating the intellectual curiosity you want to see in college application and you will definitely need citations for this essay again like the first prompt I don't think you could write this essay without outside citations so make sure you're using them throughout this portion of the essay when in whatever format you want to use now the third product it's more of a personal essay it's a bit different from the first to it like we said earlier it's how to anticipate making contributions to society with your future career what made you interested in this pursuit what is there for this property if you are completely undecided on a future career or profession you will want to choose another prompt we always get students who write an essay and they'll say well I'm thinking about this career in the first pair raph but I'm also considering this career the second paragraph or I might want to do this on the third paragraph that's not a really effective essay if you're a completely undecided on what you want to do I would not respond to this I say this really isn't a good essay for you to respond to if you do choose to respond and assessing make sure you answer both questions in the prompt as equally as possible as you notice there's two questions it doesn't mean you have to do 300 words on one question and 300 words on the second question but if you're spending 90% of the essay respond to the first question and barely talking about what made you interested in the pursuit that's a problem advice a versa that's an issue too so make sure you're giving as much equal weight as you can to both parts of the the questions that are being posed you do not necessarily mean citations for this prompt I've seen a lot of effective essays for this prompt that did not have citations if again though if you are using outside information it's very noticeable it is a good idea to still use those citations you always want to cite outside information but for this prompt I don't think you're going to need it nearly as much as you would for the first or second prompts so do take that into account as well so those are the three prompts some general essay writing tips I want to share with you about eight I'm going to talk about and this can apply it a really any college application but especially for those that are responding to the fellowship scholarship application prompts make sure you're answering a prompt in its entirety and then you're answering question itself that's an issue a lot of students have if there's multiple questions make sure you're answering each part of the problem not just one part you also don't want to try to squeeze in an essay from another application or assignments that might be a similar prompt and not quite we can tell that very easily any season two college application reviewer across the nation is able to tell when you're trying to squeeze in a prompt from another assignments it's very easy to tell and you know for better or for worse I know you're a lot of your applying multiple colleges there's only so much time in the day that's going to make the reviewer think you're not taking that specific application seriously and in a very competitive admissions process that can hurt you severely make sure you're not doing that you also wanna make sure you're preparing a strong introduction to draw the reader into the essay reality is a lot of our reviewers and again at most schools are reading dozens if not hundreds of applications in most years I'm reading 500 to 600 fellowship applications of the University that's a lot of reading what that said it's really important as because our reviewers reading so many essays you need to have a strong introduction because if the reviewer sees the introduction that you have grammatical errors that you're using a lot of overused phrases at the beginning they're they're going to assume fair unfair the rest of the essay is not that strong they may not spend as much time as they would have if they saw a strong introduction so you really want to make sure you get a it's a short essay so you need that was strong essay in general but that introduction that first paragraph has to be solid as possible make sure that you're doing that you also as I just mentioned more the use of cliches and platitudes overuse phrases what doesn't kill me makes me stronger it felt like a lay a lifetime it's my life changed in just one second avoid those those are overused phrases cliches platitudes those aren't effective in a college essays make sure to avoid those as much as possible some other essay writing tips use clear language that you are comfortable using we always have students who I can tell they do this they write their essay then they go through the essay once again probably with an online thesaurus and try to replace every one or two syllable word with a four or five syllable word just to impress us you can tell they're not comfortable using that language and they might not also understand that even though it's a synonym that four or five syllable word might have multiple meanings that really make the reader wonder if you're using a how strong your addiction is so make sure to use clear language that you're comfortable using that you really want to do that in the essay that's better than trying to jam in a lot of words that you don't quite understand make sure the essay is adding to the application I mentioned this earlier you don't want to be repeating yourself or talking about the same topics one section of the application and in another so like with that second essay prompt if you're talking about a writer you probably don't own this discuss discuss that writer in the three work sections make sure you're always adding to the application that's what I call it a good college application will do when you've written your essay a first draft is complete read your essay aloud this is a great advice from our Dean of the Honors College dr. Linda Coonan something I've done for many years myself when you read your essay out loud note on I even tell you if you can print it out if you can't you can do notes on your computer but every time you trip over a sentence or a specific word there's probably an issue with the writing there note that's and look to revise that's a good general essay writing tip read it aloud and wherever you trip over at the words you probably need to do some type of revision so make sure to do that and then as with the three works make sure you have at least one person you trust proofread your essay that's really important I discourage students from having like four or five people read their essays because they're going to start getting conflicting information over time and that's that can be ineffective one person maybe two whether it's a teacher counselor parents a an older sibling or a friend who's gone through the college admissions process and has done well in that process make sure at least one person does that even if you're the best writer in the world every writer has blind spots I've had to write many papers in my time I read the whole dissertation for my doctorate I have my blind spots - and I need other individuals to point out to me so make sure at least one person proofread your essay so those are general essay writing tips they apply for our application but they'll apply for any college application that you're submitting this fall so in conclusion all the prompts are equal choose one that you feel will help you write the best essay best essay I can't stress that enough make sure you answer each part the prompt while avoiding the common pitfalls we discussed with the prompts and follow those general essay tip tips that I just gave you can make sure you've done each before submission because what most colleges including the University of Arkansas once you click Submit you can't go back and revise it's in it's done so make sure that have all those tips haven't followed before you submit and then I said earlier proofread proofread again can't stress that enough so thank you so much for watching this video if you want to follow follow up with the Honors College you see our information there phone number email website blog Instagram and Twitter feel free to reach out give any questions concerns need someone take a look at a section of your essay that you you have questions about we're happy to do it just reach out to us but again thank you for watching this video ok have a wonderful rest of the day
