many consultants I work with get anxiety attacks when it comes to writing a proposal they worry so much about the exact right words that they miss out and what the proposal is supposed to do for them in their clients your proposal is a way to put into writing the foundations of what all great teams and partnerships are based on shared working goals clarity of roles and responsibilities and mutual accountability so in this video I'm going to share with you the four basic sections of a proposal and what function they served in establishing the partnership the first section of the proposal is what I'm calling background and objectives you can feel free to change the title as long as you understand the purpose of this section in the background and objectives section you are providing a written receipt of the directional agreement you and your client have already come to in this section you're putting forth the reasons that your client has called you and what you both have discussed in terms of the business performance goals and the expected return on investment for the project as well as what was discussed about their expectations for the value to be gained by partnership with you the second section of proposal writing is what i'm calling methodology and options and this is where proposal writing gets really fun this is where you take a look at the business performance gaps and you use your expertise to determine what you think is the best approach your client should take to bridge those business performance gaps and then you present different options of different ways that you can help your client implement that methodology the third section is what I'm calling faizan terms and this is where you get into all the nitty-gritty about what is equitable compensation for your involvement in delivering the results that your client is seeking we will be discussing different pricing models in a bit but for now this is a section where you're less persuasive and simply more factual about what it takes to partner with you and finally the fourth section is what I'm simply calling acceptance this is where your client has a clear call to action which option are they going to select and do they agree to your payment terms there's a definite art inside that goes into proposal writing I don't think I've ever used the exact same template twice because I'm always learning and frankly my client's needs and communication styles are very very different for example last year I had two clients that I was contracting with for at the same time both seeking my help on an organization design project one of my clients was an engineering firm and the other a sales driven company for my engineering clients i created a word document with lots of details but for my sales client I put my proposal to powerpoint the head lots of pictures and graphics that form the basis of a presentation that we actually wind up using several times throughout the early phases of the project so you're going to find more success in easing your proposal writing if you focus less on complying with a particular template and more I'm making sure you hit the outcomes that you need in order to present your offer for partnership in a manner that your client finds most compelling so long with this video you will find a proposal writing guide and two templates that you can use as a starting point one in word and the other and PowerPoint some of the sections you're going to find easier to put together than others so mastering proposal writing is not easy so if you find this content challenging you may want to consider if you might benefit from having a mentor guide you through this process I'll see you in the next video
