[Music] you perhaps not with her name in stamp collecting commands the respect and recognition and awe as the name says wafts Wanya in a career spanning over 50 years he engraved over 1000 postage stamps for more than 30 different countries born in Poland in 1921 he was a child prodigy and art who learned early how to exploit his talents for profit he started off forging lunch tickets for him and his friends at school and then later sold his drawings to classmates for them to turn in on assignment as their own work during World War two he worked for the Polish resistance forging identity cards and other documents after the war he enrolled in the art academy specializing in engraving he was an avid boxing fan and he indulged his passion by forging tickets to the local matches while at the Art Academy he attracted the attention of Marion Pollock the head engraver at the Polish government printing house and in 1950 he found himself employed as an apprentice stamp engraver his first stamp engraving work can be seen on Poland Scott number 486 issued in 1950 but he did not engrave the whole stamp only the portion shown within the blue box that's right all he got to engrave on this first stamp was the head of the hammer however the following year when Poland issued this stamp honoring general Henrik Tom profs key while it gives Co credits to pollock and Swan yya it was completely engraved by Swan yeah under the watchful eye of his mentor over the next half century over 30 more countries would utilize his talents for their postage stamps including most notably his adoptive home country of Sweden for whom along with Monaco and Denmark Swan yo was awarded the title of official royal court engraver the apex of his career was marked in his 50th anniversary year by his 1000th engraved stamp issued on a souvenir she from Sweden picturing a detail from David Aaron strolls in 17th century painting on a ceiling of drottingholm palace called the great deeds swedish kings with an engraved area measuring 55 millimetres by 75 millimetres this stamp is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest engraved stamp ever produced swanee a--'s work is noted for his incredible detail and intricate fine line work he was able to engrave up to 10 lines per millimeter and it is his mastery of line spacing along with the width and depth of the engraved lines which result in the beautiful renderings of light and shadow seen in his work Swan iya was known for his sense of humor and for including familiar faces and names within his stamp engravings the first example of such is found on this 1952 stamp from Poland of an automobile assembly plant where the workers shown is none other than SWANA himself in 1986 for a pair of stamps promoting the hobby of stamp collecting issued by the United Nations swanny again depicted himself this time in the process of engraving a stamp design in 1973 for this stamp showing potato farmers picking their crop the model for the woman farmer is swanee --is own mother and again in 1973 for this stamp depicting the field of entrance in the vasa cross-country ski race Swan iya can once again be found in the lower left corner additionally to the right of Swan yeah we find the head of the Swedish stamp printing office Lars Eric yourt and behind him is van Anderson a technician at the Swedish stamp printing office in addition Swan yo was also known for concealing names of friends and family members within his engravings in this 1953 stamp depicting the vaudeville Castle courtyard look closely above the window in the blue box with enough magnification you will eventually see he has inscribed the name of his good friend pilch in this 1952 airmail stamp depicting a plane over the city of Warsaw take a look at the contours of the treetops here and along the left edge here along the tree top you will find the name Majewski which is the married name of his sister de Acharya and on the left edge is the name of another member of the Majewski family loca for the centennial year of the national museum sweden issued this stamp depicting a scene from 1866 on the staircase of the national museum look closely at the lady in the center do you see it let's get a little closer within the folds of her dress you can see where SWANA has inscribed the name of his sister loggia in 1983 sweden in the USA released a joint issue that is each country issued a stamp featuring identical designs to commemorate the same event this one was to commemorate the Treaty of Amity and commerce between USA and Sweden signed in 1783 the stamps depict a portrait of looking at the two stamps you could be excused if you came to the conclusion that the two countries shared one die to print each of their stamps yet take a closer look and you will see some subtle differences the tapered fingertip on one stamp the shade lines in the hair indicating that these were in fact two separate engraved dyes here is a gorgeous stamp from 1971 recreating a painting by the swedish artist eagle Schwab depicting an 18th century male coach now whenever you're looking at an engraved stamp look at the two names in the lower left and right hand corners of the stamp it's common practice among various countries that the designer of the stamp or in this case the original artists of the source painting is shown on the left while the artist who did the engraving of the die is shown on the right and on this 1985 europa issue you will notice that swan is is the only name inscribed in the center of the margin this indicates that the stamp was both designed and engraved by him Swan you remained active up until his death in 2005 one of his last incomplete projects was the 2004 Elvis Presley stamp issued by Sweden swanny I only got as far as shading in the background his protege and fellow Pope Peter Nashik offski engraved the portrait to finish the stamp this has been only the briefest of introductions to the works of the most prolific and arguably the greatest engraver of postage stamps I hope to do a follow-up video later in which I can highlight many more of the stamps he did for dozens of other countries if you'd
