there's a Catholic philosopher called John Moriarty and John says the trouble is Christianity needs to ReDiscover what he calls its Bush Soul it's undomesticated uh it's weird to remember its weirdness to remember its essential christness there's nothing reassuring about Jesus that's why I I stayed away from him for so long he was the most radical of all the gods well I'm delighted to be joined on the show Now by Martin Shaw who's a writer teacher and mythologist he's an award-winning author and director of the West Country School of myth now Martin's been writing and teaching about nature spirituality and mythology for a long time but recently something rather startling and unexpected happen he actually converted to Christianity Martin welcome along to the show thank you Justin thank you for having me we bumped into each other just recently and it was great to make your acquaintance and then you very briefly spelled out some of your story and I thought this is fascinating I'd love love to capture this for a Christmas edition of our unbelievable show so here we are um take us back first though because it's not as though you're completely new to Christianity I think you did grow up in a Christian setting didn't you I did yes I grew up going to a place called Upton Vale Baptist Church in tall Bay so I grew up around some great preaching there was a a record there called Peter Barber from Scotland and so I was aware and my father was and his a preacher is a very good one my brother's a pastor my sister is a Catholic Powerhouse over in wilsonham so I've it's been in the oxygen but for some reason often when my dad was coming back from having given a sermon he'd on the walk home with the pressure off he'd tell me fairy tales or he'd talk about folklore and without that pressure to believe quote unquote my imagination felt more liberated so to be honest by the time I got to 17 where we'd moved from the Baptist World a little bit more into the Free Church and the the very the high drama of the charismatic movement in the early 80s so you're talking to a veteran of spring Harvest and Greenbelt and all that kind of stuff uh by about 17 I thought I need a major Hiatus from this I didn't realize that Hiatus was going to take till uh I was almost 50. there you go um tell us about how life did develop for you where did the interest in mythology and exploring that side of that Dimension if you like of the spiritual nature of the world come from I think it came from uh the fact that we lived in a house which didn't have a television in it and I was used to Great stories Through the Bible uh but my mum and dad never regarded...
