hey everybody I'm Daniel Schwab our for Clearwater press and in this video I'm going to do a quick explanation of the reporters notebook that comes with our byline writing program now parents sometimes ask me is this just a notebook by which they mean am I paying for lined paper and that's a fair question and you're not just paying for lined paper it is a notebook and it does have lined paper in it but that is not all that it is as we flip through it I think you'll be able to see what I mean now obviously it is set up to mirror the course which means that it has six sections that follow by lines who what when where why and how format and within the notebook there are examples of completed lessons that model the sorts of notes I'm asking students to take those examples are very important the main reason they're important is the basic structure of the pages which have separated into a top third and a bottom two thirds I teach this system during the course and I can't overemphasize its importance not just in journalism but in academic writing when I first started working on byline I noticed a growing trend of mainstream news organizations to kind of blur the lines between editorial and hard news well that line isn't just blurry at this point it has basically disappeared so high school students today do not have the same journalistic standards modeled for them in the culture that you and I had they're used to seeing opinions expressed as fact and that is a problem for many reasons but it's something we can actually address the notebook models how to separate data from analysis emotions from physical details questions from answers and really opinions from objective facts by forcing students to analyze and distinguish these categories in the process of doing research the reporters notebook equips them to be more honest and more rigorous in their own work finally the notebook is set up to teach a simple journalism based citation method that should carry over to any system they end up using in college the goal is not just to make them better students it's to make them better consumers of news media in a world where objectivity is rare
