[Music] hey guys welcome to the virtual electrician tve your one-stop shop for do-it-yourself electrical help this is one of our most important videos this is going to help you correctly size your circuits if you get through this video and you just want that extra assurance you did everything correctly then visit thevirtualectricion.com and schedule a virtual electrician to go through your plan with you let's get right to it i'll try not to make your head spin i'm proud of you fellas you all kept your head on a swivel this calculation we're going to talk about is in the electrician's bible the uglies handbook this nifty little book has a lot of useful calculations and information about electricity the calculation we are going to talk about is one of the simpler ones the load calculation the first thing you want to do is look at the spec sheet of the item you need to wire up the spec sheet will tell you how many amps or watts it pulls and if the item is single pole or two pole single pole means it only uses one phase of the panel so it's only using 120 volts two pole items use both phases of the panel so it's 240 volts if the item you are wiring pulls 1200 watts and only uses 120 volts the calculation is watts divided by volts equals amps 1200 divided by 120 equals 10 amps however an important fact to know you can only load a breaker to 80 the closest breaker size to 10 amps is 15 amps let's see what 80 percent of 15 is 0.8 times 15 equals 12. that means for a 15 amp circuit you get 12 amps you can play with in this case that item will need a dedicated 15 amp circuit when i say dedicated that means you can't use anything else on that circuit technically you've still got two amps you can play with but let's say you install another convenience outlet on that circuit someone plugs a vacuum into it you're going to trip that breaker let's say you do your load calculation and it says you're going to pull 12.5 amps you're like sweet i can use a 15 amp breaker on that that 12.5 is actually greater than the 80 allowance you get in that case you will need to bump it up to the next breaker size which is 20 amps let's move on to 240 volt circuits let's say the item is 240 volts and it's pulling 7600 watts the equation is still watts divided by volts equals amps so it's 7600 divided by 240 equals 31.67 the next breaker size up from 30 is 40. let's see what 80 percent of 40 is 0.8 times 40 equals 32 that is within your 80 allowance so you would install a two pull 40 amp breaker then look at your wire opacity chart to see what size wire can carry...
