welcome to our webinar on work authorizations for students in f1 status today we're going to talk about curricular practical training there are three types of work authorization curricular practical training short for cpt economic hardship or optional practical training which we also call opt this particular recording will be only about curricular practical training curricular practical training is work authorization in your field of study it cannot be something that is not related to your field it must be a required part of your curriculum that means that it is necessary for your degree plan and it must be credit bearing or tied to a credit bearing course for example our culinary program is an associate of applied science that program has a required number of hours that need to be done on the job to gain practical experience curricular practical training or cpt would be appropriate for that it has to be also specifically recommended by your academic advisor one of the benefits of cpt is that there's no fee associated with the application you must have an offer letter for it from your employer including your supervisor's name and phone the physical location of where you're going to be employed if you're going to have multiple locations that will need to be specified because this is a specific location authorization the number of hours per week you cannot exceed more than 20 hours per week if you have part-time authorization 21 hours or more is considered full-time and we need a job description to demonstrate that this work is related to your field of study with that letter you must then go to your jscc faculty advisor or academic advisor for a recommendation that this program meets the requirements of being a necessary part of your curriculum or tied to an academic bearing course in that in that regard we have a form that would be filled out by your faculty advisor and we have more information on that if you want information about cpt you can email international at jeffersonstate.edu to request the forms or you can find that information at the jeffersonstate.edu forward slash international under international forms so one of the great benefits of curricular practical training is that this authorization can be granted pretty quickly because it's directly granted by the international advisor at your institution quick approval but it must be related to your field if it's not related and required by your major you can't do cpt it is possible to get you up to a year of practical experience that's a great thing if you're doing one of our associates of applied science those are the ones that are most eligible for these i have rarely been able to justify curricular practical training for transfer degrees because most of the transfer degrees do not have practical applied courses within the major so you would have to speak to me on a case-by-case basis it does allow you to get a...
