good afternoon captain Justin DeLeon here from the University of Iowa a PMS here at Iowa and also the MS 3 instructor today I'm going to talk about something a little more unique than some of my previous videos today we're going to talk about radio operations so the purpose of today's lesson is to talk about radio operations at the platoon level and focus on how we can be concise we can have B have clarity and talk very efficiently on the radio which is going to help ultimately lead to mission success this is gonna help cadets a lot at advanced campus this is also gonna help any soldier out there that hasn't really received proper instruction on how to use your radio the main reference that we're gonna be using today is ATP 6 - 2.53 techniques for tactical radio operations alright so I'm gonna start by giving a good frame of reference a little bit so we're gonna talk about electromagnetic spectrum and just kind of what it is and where the radio operations work on that and then also talk about some of the different modes that we talk about talk on and on FM coms we're gonna go over call signs numbers we're gonna go over pro words and then kind of talk over what a normal radio check should look like kind of get the basics down but I guarantee a lot of words that you think you're using on the radio are actually not supposed to be used or you're probably using them incorrectly so hopefully this can clear some of that up okay first of all we're going to talk about the electromagnetic spectrum this is a spectrum in which data is transmitted by waves so we're talking out sound waves light waves anything that is moving in a wave is somewhere on the electromagnetic spectrum the visible light is there microwaves are there x-rays are there sound waves are there everything that is transmitted is typically on this spectrum okay so we're the military typically functions and works when we talk about FM communications again FM or AM is just like it is on your radio at home that you've listened to the car that is what we primarily use in the army as well that is our primary there's a lot so special radios out there that we use I'll not have me talking about those today but mostly we use FM comm so if you use a PRC 119 that's gonna be on this okay so it's in that FM spectrum FM comms and really what that pot is part of is the VHF very high frequency they're very creative about these names alright on that spectrum okay to the right of us to the right you got UHF shf alright EHF all these different areas where basically the frequencies become higher higher and higher and the wavelengths become shorter and shoulder and shorter alright where you can...
