Herman I'm back again with another video this time we're going to be calculating the check digit for a credit card we did this in class but it's just to give you another example if you need one you can use this or practice for the for the test also if I'm going too fast so anytime you go ahead and pause the video and you can catch up we start this process by multiplying every even position digit starting from the right side right side by to eating positions being the two one two three four so it's always going to be like this second than the fourth and second and the fourth souks times two like so multiplying by two and this or that we find those products and we bring them down so 5 times 2 is 10 at the same time we'll also bring down the odd position digits that we did not multiply by anything multiplied 1 or just bring them down it's the same thing notice the check digit is missing in this case so 4 and then we get 4 and so on like this just bring these down 16 7 okay unlike the some of the other processes we did before if you remember the UPC and ISBN numbers we don't add up the numbers on this like this isn't ten plus four plus four plus five you know this isn't sixteen with the credit card numbers you add up individual digits so this is going to actually be one plus zero plus four and so on so every single digit gets a plus sign between it again 16 is not 16 it's 1 plus 6 so put a plus sign within all these and then you can pause this and use your calculator to add them up to see if you get the same sum I got and my son came out to be 71 so your goal is to figure out what you have to add to this this is a mod 10 system so the next highest multiple of 10 is 80 after 71 so we need to add 9 to make that a verifiable credit card so the check digit in this case is 9
