okay welcome to today's intercontinental zoom event eyewitness identification from a different angle my name is john wickstead and i'll be the moderator for this event today i'm a professor at university of california san diego where i study a variety of memory related issues such as signal detection models of recognition memory the coding of recognition memory and single neurons of the human hippocampus and eyewitness memory especially eyewitness identification for this event today we've assembled a group of 11 expert panelists to discuss a novel eyewitness identification procedure known as the interactive lineup if you watch the short online videos presenting recent research investigating that procedure you know that it consistently and pretty substantially elevates the roc which is a plot of the hit rate the probability of identifying a guilty suspect from a target present lineup versus the false alarm rate the probability of misidentifying an innocent suspect from a target absent lineup what that essentially means is that the interactive lineup can achieve both a higher hit rate which is a good thing because you want to get the bad guy and a lower false alarm rate which is also a good thing because you don't want innocent suspects being misidentified compared to various typical lineup procedures so in that sense the interactive lineup serves the cause of justice or at least has the potential to do so and that's basically what we're here to talk about today in a few moments i'll call on each of our 11 panelists to briefly introduce themselves about a one minute self introduction then i'll ask professor heather flo to give a short presentation on the interactive lineup procedure just to refresh your memory of exactly what it is and what it can do and after that i'll get down to the main business of posing questions to the expert panelists and note to our panelists these questions are really just invitations for you to share your thoughts they're basically conversation starters so feel free to completely deviate from the questions if you wish uh and share other thoughts that might be on your mo your mind today all right a few ground rules this event will run for a maximum of 90 minutes um everyone who isn't talking please keep your microphones on mute during the question and answer period i'll call on panelists who have their virtual hand raise if they'd like to jump in as i'm questioning a different panelist that's perfectly fine if the audience has questions go ahead and put them in uh i suppose it's the question and answer box and someone will eventually read your question and and we'll try to answer it okay well turning now to the panelists self introductions i'll just call on people in the order in which they were listed on the website program um professor carolyn semmler why don't we begin with you thanks john it's really exciting to be here today i'm a professor at...
