[Music] hi there my name is Daniel Mintz I'm lockers chief data evangelist and I'm here to give you a quick introduction to looker looker is the newest member of GCPs family and so we want to let you know what looker is what makes it special and when you might want to reach out so you know I think the first thing to just say is that business intelligence is the critical last mile for getting value from data you know data sitting locked away in a database isn't providing value to anybody and so really what we want to do is make sure that looker helps you get value from your data and the thing to know is you know most data you know users these days aren't looking for data from a single source they're pulling data together from a whole bunch of different sources you know that might be adds data it might be YouTube data social data you know transactional data and you know that data comes in lots of shapes and sizes and needs to be sort of joined together and so you know the first thing you're probably gonna do is extract that data from its various sources do some transformation some preparation and then eventually you're gonna push it into a database or data warehouse data engine data Lake whatever you want to call it Google has some amazing ones you know Google bigquery obviously cloud spanner you know cloud sequel there are lots of options here and if you're an engineer or you know a data analyst this might be the end of the line for you you might be able to access the data directly in the database and that might be all you need so when you ask a question you know you can go write your sequel access the database and get your answer but for most people that's not possible they may not speak sequel they may not understand how the data is structured in the database and they may not have access to the data in the database even if they can do the other things so something like looker is that critical piece that actually allows them to ask questions of the data and you know looker allows lots of people in your organization to analyze the data without having to get down and dirty and really understand the you know the schema of the data in the database that's really powerful and once lookers sitting on top of your data you can do lots of things you can obviously enable lots of people in your organization to access that data to ask questions and make better data-driven decisions but you could also drive downstream things like an AI ml workflow so you know this is a little bit of what looker looks like probably doesn't look that different from any other BI tools that you maybe are familiar with but we're gonna show you a little bit more about what makes look or different in the demo and I just want to talk before we dive into that just about what you know lookers take on business intelligence is and why architectural II it's so different than the other tools that you might be familiar with so the first is that looker sits directly on top of your database that makes it really different than other tools which are used to extract data from your database some you know portion of the data and allow you to sort of slice and dice it in their proprietary data store looker is directly connected to your database it's BYO DB and that can be one of 55 you know sequel dialects but what that means is that you always have access to the full row level detail in looker and you can fully leverage the power of today's most powerful databases like bigquery so if you know you can query petabytes of data in bigquery then you can query petabytes of data in look or without you know having to do anything special because looker is sitting directly on top of bigquery the second thing is that looker takes all of the knowledge about what your data means out of your analysts head because frankly it's hard to get into your analysts head and puts it into the the software right it puts it into what we call look ml which is a markup language that sits on top of sequel and it helps analysts take all that knowledge and make it available to everybody in the business and what that means is that everybody in the business who wants to know about certain metrics doesn't have to keep the current definition in their head means that looker takes care of that and so when they ask a question and then it they say I want to see lifetime customer value by channel source they don't have to know exactly what the data definitions of those metrics are those terms they can just ask looker and looker can translate for them the third thing is that lookers entirely based in the cloud so there's only one version of looker you don't download a desktop app and keep that separate from the server it all is the server and so that means that everybody's accessing the same one and it also means that lucre can plug into all of the other tools that you're probably already using in the cloud you know looker has a full set of api's and it can talk to other programs api so that you can push data out into other tools finally looker is built by developers for developers you know for those of you who are software engineers you're obviously familiar with all of the ways that you know we build complex systems by collaboration right so version control the ability to do code review the ability to you know roll back changes the ability to work in a dev mode and then you know push to staging and then to production data analysts and I'm a data analyst I haven't fully figured out that that workflow they haven't fully embraced it sadly but looker is about bringing those really good ideas from software engineering to data because we know that data analysts today are building more and more complex systems and they need to be able to collaborate at the same scale of software engineers so looker brings all of that stuff you know get version control it brings dev staging and prod it brings you know full API coverage all of those things are brought over from the software engineering world into analytics by looker and so what all of that you know architectural difference delivers is a really different experience at the end right so you know looker obviously can deliver modern business intelligence that's fine you know JavaScript visualizations dashboards reports whatever you need in your browser but it can go a lot further than that it can also integrate insights into all the tools that people are already using and we know that that makes a huge difference in adoption because if you force people to come out of the tools they're using and learn a new tool that's a big barrier to entry if instead you take you know meaningful data that can answer their question and push it into the the places that they're already working that makes it a lot easier for them to adopt and ask follow-up questions so looker is all about embedding those insights into what people are already using we can also drive workflows so that might be a you know a tool you know that's doing dynamic pricing for example where there's no human in the loop so looker is pushing you know governed metrics to the engine and that engine is then making decisions about how to price things on your website it might be reminding product managers to update their epic status in slack by pushing out you know some information about which epics haven't been recently updated to slack and saying hey can you update this so you know that whole data-driven workflow is really core to the way that look are often delivers data and finally we can build whole custom applications on top of lookers analytics platform so looker has you know what we like to call 110 percent API coverage so you can do everything you can do in the UI through API and you can do even more through the API we also allow you to embed look or using javascript or iframes and so that allows you to build a completely bespoke user experience where you don't have to worry about what the underlying data means or where it comes from how it's you know version controlled all of that is taken care of by looker and looker just delivers the data that you need into the place that you need it so you can build really amazing user experiences so that's a little bit about looker let's dive into the demo so you can see it in action
