hi everybody this is eugene lockland and welcome to my series of short how-to videos in this video we're going to learn how to perform the wilcoxon signed rank test in spss so before we form to perform the test let's take a quick look at the data we're going to use in this example and the wilcoxon signed rank test is effectively the equivalent of a paired t-test so our data are paired in our case here we have one measurement performed on two occasions so in our first column we have a clone these are the names of popular trees okay of a common tree type but these 13 different clones of this tree and we have measured in august and in november in a polluted area we have measured the aluminium content in milligrams per gram of wood so how much aluminium is in a gram of wood in august and we want to compare that to the same measurement in november and we're interested to determine uh if um the if there's a difference in the aluminium concentration over these two months as well not a month and a winter month so let's go ahead and perform the test now there's two ways to do this in spss and i'm going to show you both ways in this video our first way is we're going to select the analyze menu go down to non-parametric tests because the wilcoxon sign rank test is a non-parametric test and we can see here that we have the options in here to compare independent samples or related samples so our samples are related are paired so we're going to select the related samples option we've got three tabs across the top over here that we need to take a look at in our first one the objective we want to leave that as it is this is automatically comparing the observed data to be hypothesized so we don't need to change that the second tab is the fields tab so this is where i need to tell spss what to examine i'm going to ignore the clone variable because that's just a labels in our data set so we don't need to do anything with that and i want to take the august and november data and put them into the test field so click on the copy button select november and copy so that we can get august november over into the test fields the third and last tab up here is the settings tab and in here i can actually choose to select a test i want to leave it at automatically choose the test based on the data because our data is set up to do this but if it wasn't you could select the customized test and in our case here the wilcoxon match test is listed but i'm going to switch this back to automatic and the last thing i want to check here is...
