so why am I going eurorack modular beside the obvious gear acquisition syndrome part of it all well that's the topic for this video so welcome to the first episode of you rack with bow so why am i building a you rack system well recent number one is that I've been more and more into synthesis over the last year and I feel that this is that logical next step in order to learn more about how sin functions learn more about sound design and that ties in to recent number two I enjoy teaching about since about music production and I feel that this can be a great opportunity to make a series right sort of take you through the process of building aux-in now it's not going to be this super structured series there are some other great ones I'll link a couple below that are more super structured maybe one two three episodes you know going over all the basics my series will be a lot more about documenting my journey my experiences and also of course conveying knowledge about your accents but I won't go into it as some kind of expert because I'm definitely not I'm more an enthusiast and I want to try it out and I think that yeah putting that into a couple of videos over this year will be a lot of fun so don't worry I'm turning this into a you rock channel I will do a video now and then depending on when I got new modules hopefully I can get some sponsored modules psychic do an episode every month or something like that that would be a lot of fun now on to recent number three which is that I enjoy Lego did that make sense I enjoy Lego and I'm not the kind of guy that goes into Lego looking at the manual building whatever I'm supposed to build with pieces I bought when I was kid I just you know put all the pieces in a in a big pile and I made whatever castle spaceships you know all from my own mind I didn't really enjoy following like the blueprint I suppose it's the correct word and this is a perspective I will bring with me into you rack because your act for me is a lot about fitting different pieces together and creating totally new and different types of sins or effect racks and I think this can be a lot of fun the reason number four is the artistic reason I'm very interested in seeing what Europe will do to my music making process will I create just fart noises and PPT blobs or will I actually create something with that has kind of an artistic value songs of some kind I'm not sure and this is exciting to me I've been making music for many many years and tried very different approaches and this is an approach I haven't tried so I'm looking forward to see what kind of artistic output this leads to if any or if it's just you know a gear collecting hobby I'm not sure and now I want to talk about the gear I am starting out with because I think a lot of you guys are interested in hearing a little bit about where do I start out and what's my kind of take on how to start a you rack synth so let's have a look at the gear now pretty much the first thing you have to choose when you're starting out whether your rack is what case you want now I would advise to get something at least as big as this this is the 6u Arturia rack brute there's a 3u version but I think that's that's something you'll grow out of really quickly now the reason why I picked the Arturia rack boot is simply because it integrates so well with Arturia minibrute 2 + 2 s and this integration makes a lot of sense because it turns the minibrute 2 into the stepping stone from which you're going to do you rack you can expand with modules but it doesn't have to be this all in it's more like an expansion from the mini boot to into your rack now another thing I really enjoy with this case is the fact that you can fold it together and carry it around now with a filled case and say a mini boot - it'll be heavy it's not something you'll run around town with but to bring to a gig or to some friend's house you know it makes sense getting a semi modular synth like the mother 32 is a great way to start out your you iraq and the reason is simply that you're paying a lot less for multiple functions so I'm using the motor 32 as a starting point in my rig and there are some highlights with them at 32 for example you have a sequencer on it you do have a MIDI input that you can use to control other sources over a CV and you have a functionality on the mother 32 spatch by itself the highlights is that you have the LFO where you have both the rate and outputs of telephone that you can use and you have a multiplier to multiply signals and you have a little mixer section so that's just some of the highlights and I'm going to do a separate episode where I rackmount the mother 32 [Music] [Music] now as you've seen I'm also using the minibrute - from Arturia this is also a great semi modular synthesizer it does offer a little bit more utility than the matter thirty-two in the patch base section for example you have a pretty extensive mixer section you have the possibility to output two LFOs or three views the second oscillator and you can also do some attenuation and I will also do a separate episode on attenuation because that's pretty important as well but although the mini Mbutu makes sense as a starting point because you have the MIDI input so you can for example hook it up to a dig attacked like I will do and you can use the onboard sequencer a key step like sequencer to sequence stuff as well and if you want to go deeper get them in booth 2's which has a much more deeper sequencer and I think it fits your rack a little bit better but these are just some of the highlights now something that is good to keep in mind is also that with my 32 and or I mean boo - you don't actually need to spend a ton of money on se envelopes output modules basically you can just go from the mini booth to or the mother 32 out to another modules say another oscillator and then back into the mother 32 or mini boo - you're sort of average gear acquisition syndrome that sees you wanting to go out and buy the latest things with you or Iraq I think the addiction is based to some extent on that need because one module on its own will do nothing so you need several modules to get a sound and several modules more probably to finesse that sound to the way that you want it to to be and therefore it's easier to justify I need this because it will do X Y and Zed in a way that it's a little bit more difficult to justify buying an extra set of keys when you have several already that's just my personal experience my advice would be especially for those starting out if you can be clear on what you want to achieve from your from your small system it will mean that you have more focus on the modules that you end up buying so if you want to make house you have an idea of the sound you want to create try and limit your purchases to to the idea you can always expand later on and if you go in at the beginning not knowing what you want to get out of it I feel the temptation is just too strong the risk is that you head in a lot of different directions and you might end up being able to do lots of things sort of averagely rather than focusing on something and doing one thing very well so thank you so much for watching this first episode of eurorack with beau there will be a new episode soon I just got my first module and I'm excited to try it out so next episode we'll have more of yea more sound demos and more of explorations with that new module so stay tuned for that and hit the like button if you enjoyed this content consider subscribing and if you want to support the channel and what I do here more go over to patreon.com slash bow beats [Music]
