hi history 104 students my name is dr matthew lawbacher and i'm here today to walk you through your final project for this class for this class for your final project you have an option of three different assignments three different ways to turn in your assignment i should say one is a paper a traditional paper one is an illustrated essay where you incorporate images and captions into an essay or a powerpoint presentation all of these have their own requirements which will be discussed below so the first thing you're going to do is you're going to choose what format you want your final project to be in secondly you need to choose the topic for your final project and here there are six different topics for you to choose from either imperialism or colonialism cold war and decolonization genocide communist revolutions the topic of gender broadly construed and the topic of race there are a number of different options for you to choose under each of these particular topics so you would pick one and do research on that in order to complete this assignment you're going to need to do some background research and for this assignment you will need at least four scholarly sources so this does not include your textbook so for in addition to your textbook and you should find these resources at the library so just a quick reminder of how to get to the library click on writing center on library and you can also get here through the student portal as well then click on library so you need four sources to they you can incorporate two primary and two secondary sources remember a primary source is a source it was written at the time of study okay so if you're looking at a primary source for imperialism a speech by gandhi for example or george orwell's writings on imperials would count as primary sources all right and i'll show you where to get those for history in a second but you also need at least two secondary sources and secondary sources are sources written by historians okay so they need to come from a history journal okay so the best way to actually find uh these sources is to either you can use find it at au here uh and then click on full text scholarly peer peer-reviewed i would actually recommend you go to find articles and more click on databases a to z and then for this class i would really recommend you use the database jstor jstor is a has a lot of sources out there um and to be quite frank most history journals have their repositories their back issues in jstor i would always recommend using an advanced search okay i would always recommend narrowing your results as much as possible articles never click reviews if you click review that gives you the review of a particular book or article you can click in the english you can limit your publication dates and then go through and click here on history and that will limit the amount of sources you have in jstor so you'll remember you need at least four scholarly sources to go with your textbook for this paper you can get them all through jstor they can be all secondary sources or you can use primary up to two primary sources and primary sources again come from the time of study and we have a repository of primary sources in the ashford library for you to use or for you to access so to do this what you need to do is to go to the getting research help section of the ashford library click on research guides and then click on history you have to click on history again if you click primary source materials there's a dead link here so just click on history again and then click on primary sources and this links out to a number of different primary sources for you to access on the internet okay you can also if you are interested in say the middle east you can click on web resource for the middle east and there's additional resources for you here as well okay so you've got your research you've got your topic you've got your research what do you need to do now so let's go back to our final paper so back here at the final project page remember again you're choosing one of six different topics and within those topics you're going to choose one subtopic to look at if you are interested in looking in something that falls under this topic but isn't listed here in one of the subtopics to examine reach out to your instructor and okay it with them first okay when you go and write your paper your project you need to make sure you go through each of these requirements here okay so if you're writing a paper it needs to be about 1250 to 2 000 words in length that's about four four and a half pages to about seven pages not including title and reference page okay if you want to do an illustrated essay it needs to be it can be a little bit shorter because you're doing research on images but make sure if you do an illustrated essay that you incorporate captions explaining those images or you can do a powerpoint presentation again making sure to do uh it according to the guidelines here so when planning and writing your project whatever it may be whatever format it may be make sure that you outline the project first so you have an understanding of what you want to talk about when make sure that you incorporate evidence and that that evidence is cited correctly if you quote material make sure you enclose it in quotes as well as cite it make sure that your paper as you go through and proofread after the fact flows from one topic to another topic to another topic and most importantly make sure that you have a thesis statement in your introduction okay a thesis statement is a is an encapsulation of the main point you are making in your essay okay thesis statements are required for many assignments here at ashford if not most assignments and if you're unfamiliar with what a thesis statement is again it's a one to two sentence encapsulation of the main idea of your essay what is the one thing you want your reader to understand if you have problems coming up with thesis theses you can access the thesis generator here at ashford university's writing center and they go through and they assorted it's a way to walk through how to how to develop a thesis statement okay again your thesis statement should be the main idea of your argument it should be staking a point that you then defend throughout your paper and incorporate evidence from your sources to defend or to explain okay once you have uh gone through this process and you've written your paper you've used your four sources you've made sure everything is cited correctly you make sure you have a thesis statement you make sure your paper has strong internal organization then and only then should you turn in your paper through the waypoint link at the bottom of this page so that's the history 104 final in a nutshell as well as some additional help on how to do how to do research for this project if you have any questions on this topic i encourage you to reach out and talk to your instructor as soon as possible as early in week five as possible so they can give you feedback so that you can enact it on your final paper thanks and best of luck in your research
