in the us what is the social security number or ssn ssn is issued by the social security administration or ssa and it is like a personal id for most americans it is issued to people who are either born in the united states or who are authorized to work in the u.s ssn is a nine digit number with the format xxx x dash x x x in which the first three letters are called an area number the next two
