believe it or not most fictional stories are arguments I know we don't like to think of them as such we like to think of them as adventures and escapes but at their core stories have always been about two sides fighting one another and seeing who prevails now when it comes to presenting your story as an argument there are a lot of ways you can go wrong you can let personal bias creep in and this can cause your story to come off as preachy or one-sided so today I want to help you I want to show you how to fairly present both sides of an argument within your fictional stories what's up guys my name is Brandon McNulty I'm a writer and welcome to my writing Channel today I want to talk about the idea of how stories are arguments and when I say arguments I don't mean that they have to be these grand social or political arguments an argument in a story could be something as simple as people who don't believe in themselves should learn to believe in themselves or it could be something like vigilante justice can help solve problems in our society those are just some basic arguments that we see in a lot of different stories out there for instance say you wanted to write a story about a vigilante whether it's Batman or Dexter or whoever so you wanted to write that type of story you might start off by showing a hero who you know turns to vigilantism he starts you know beating up on criminals handing them over to the police cracking down on crime taking care of the things that the police are not taking care of or unwilling to take care of and making society better and you can show that for a period of time and you can have a lot of fun with that but at some point in your story you also have to show the other side of the coin because when it comes to basically any kind of argument there's always gonna be another side to it there's gonna be something negative about it and I think in the case of vigilantism you can show scenarios where maybe other people try to mimic the vigilante and we've seen that in Batman movies where you know other people try to dress up as Batman and they try to do what he does but they're ineffective and they end up getting themselves hurt in the process or you could show a scenario where somebody else decides to dress up in a costume and instead of taking care of things and bringing justice in society they cause crime and they cause problems so I mean you have to remember that just be was an idea comes forth and you like this idea you have to remember that there are two sides and whenever there are two sides you have to show how your argument affects society now when it comes to your own stories you have to ask yourself what is the argument you're trying to put forth and what are the two sides of your argument because stories are basically battlegrounds for different ideas and you want to accurately portray both sides of that battleground it's okay if one side defeats the other that's totally fine but be fair when you show the punch and counter punch so let's say you want to write a story and your argument is that people who don't believe in themselves should learn to believe in themselves if you're gonna write that story and if it's gonna be compelling you have to show the other side of that you have to show that sometimes when you do try to believe in yourself you end up you know hitting some pitfalls and you you have failures and you go through some rough times you have to show the ugly side of it in order for that that positive side to really have impact and this goes for anything anytime you have a story where you want to say something is bad or something is good you have to show the other side as well in order for it to have the maximum impact when it comes to writing a story you want to show your audience both sides of the argument you want to give them the opportunity to see both sides and then make judgments for themselves let them use their brains let them think and what you don't want to do is you don't want to lecture to them nobody wants to be lectured to especially when they're trying to be entertained when they're trying to watch a TV show or read a book they want to make decisions based on what the characters choose and they want to ask themselves would I do that in this particular situation is there a better way of doing that is this the best way and even if it is the best way are there still flaws to this certain idea if you want to watch a TV show that does a great job of showing both sides of the argument check out black mirror if you haven't already every episode is about some form of near-future technology and it shows how that technology affects society in positive ways and in negative ways for instance in the first half of the episode it may show that technology makes life easier but then in the second half it made show that it hurts human relationships or it makes people lazy or it gives people false hope and then maybe at the end there there's a positive ending or a negative ending and I think that's why black mirrors so successful because the show is constantly saying yes technology can be good but it can also be bad and in some other episodes it says technology can be terrible but it can do some good things as well so if you do want to get a better idea of how arguments work in fiction check out that show and pay attention
