What active users are saying — write diverse attachment
Write diverse signature
hey YouTube fam it's francelina Simone and I'm here to talk about how to write diverse characters so I've got some pointers a few steps if you will and the first one on the list is either do it or don't I think most of the the pause that comes from people who are not marginalized writing marginalized characters no matter what marginalization you're writing in whether you are from a marginalization trying to write into a marginalization gosh saying that word it's a mouthful I think most of the pause comes from the fact that people just feel frozen and do I do it don't I do it and you just go back and forth on that instead of just doing it you can only learn how to do something better once you've done it by doing so stop not doing and just do so before you actually go out and do I want to see number two is to actually learn your own point of view I know that sounds weird and it sounds all a lofty and like that learning who you are before you go out to learn who someone else is but it's really going to help you I don't care what the you write about learn your own point of view become objective about your own part in life I think every artist needs to do that if they choose to say something about their point of view because how do you know what to say if you don't know what other people need to hear and if you can see yourself as an individual and see how you are different from everyone else or how you are the same as everyone else you are better able to see how other people are different and the same number three is kind of a two-fold for people who want to write it and people who want to read it and that would be don't be chicken one and then two like don't be an so when I say don't be a chicken I mean like don't go back and forth annealing I would totally write up I'm so scared cuz I don't you know like I would just do it wrong and I just can't and then I don't know what to do or how to do it and people would just you know like complain and I don't want to be dragged on Twitter like just do what you're gonna do like if you could dragged on Twitter it ain't the end of the world like everybody gets cancelled and then everybody gets a new season if you want to be an artist and grow in life then you must just buckle up and do the that you want to do now the tool above that is dumb be an to like people who want to read diverse stories like we can't criticize people for doing it and not doing it we can't criticize people for wanting to do it and wanting to ask questions about it and then not asking questions about it we can't put people in such a hole that they are just immobilized which I see a lot there's a lot of essentially I just don't want you to do anything and then I want to beat you for not doing anything and that's not helpful for anybody I'm not saying you have to be helpful I'm just saying that and for the sake of the growth of diversity diversity is something that we want to grow and everything that grows is growing pains so you have to allow room for people to grow and that means you have to allow room for people to make mistakes and that doesn't mean you have to accept their mistakes or be nice about it or anything like that personally in my personal opinion if I don't want to see a white man write about the life of a black woman I'm not reading that book given that I would find it difficult to I guess represent all black women I know that a white man probably can't give him that piece of information why the would I go out and buy a book and read it to give him a chance anyways I'm not I won't I'm sorry that might make me ignorant that might make me like a part of a problem but I'm just not gonna do it I'm gonna support this stuff that I want to see that I want to read and you know what I feel like put your money where your mouth is but more so put your time where your mouth is because time you can always go out there and get some more money but you can't get your time back most y'all be out there reading all these books about that you don't like that you know is gonna be wrong and up and then come back complaining about it I'm just like why you being an most of all to yourself because why would you even put yourself through that if you knew that it was gonna be garbage because it smelled and looked like garbage you don't even look for it don't even reach for it don't even go to talk don't even reach for so you can read it and talk about it in trash it and tell people this is what's wrong with the book now we already know what's wrong with the world girl why you bringing it up some more why you've given me something to even look at why are you why are you doing that to a sista why are you doing it to me when you put that on my timeline I got time for that so while I say that people should just do what they're gonna do and stop being a about it I also think we should not be and seek out the things that we hate but most of all and my last caveat on all of this is that sometimes it's wise to stay in your lane if you have people critiquing your stuff and they're all like what are you doing this just doesn't look right like maybe you should consider doing something different there's nothing wrong with staying in your lane writing what you know there are people out there who want to read your story I know that everybody's calling for diversity and people want more exposure for diverse books that does not take away from the audience that you can possibly have for your type of story so if you are not someone who is marginalised consider just writing something that you want to see and if that has marginalized people go ahead and give it a go try my only caveat is if it's a contemporary and you're trying to write about a marginalized person from their perspective maybe consider something different um I think with any write contemporaries from the perspective of someone that you don't identify with there are a lot of ways that you can fail at that and if you're a new writer or someone who isn't confident in your own skills yet build up your confidence before you go out and jump off that ledge because you know you could fly or you could fall I have no idea don't come back to me when you do either I'm just saying that's my caveat that when you write contemporaries or a piece about what it's like being a black woman in the black lives matter activism pursue and you are not a black woman and you have never been to a black lives matter protest like I'm just saying um maybe write it from your own kind of perspective and if other people don't like that story that's what happens sometimes sometimes you don't have readers for your stuff but I know that most of you were talking about secondary characters or adding characters that are in the world and creating it diverse and my main thing is just do it and learn from what you do you don't have to publish your first draft if your stuff is up in all sorts of messed up it's okay learn from your mistakes revise rewrite edit keep going and just try to do the best that you can do everybody just do good do you and flourish and that's all I've got to say on that topic so guys let me know down below what you think about people who aren't marginalized writing or adding marginalized characters into their story is that something that you want to see more of like let me know where you stand on that down in the comments and don't forget to Like and subscribe and I upload videos on Tuesday at 2 Saturday at 10:00 and I will see you then guys ttio to talk now bye [Applause] [Music]
