hey kiddo so today we're just gonna go over what it means to be a coming-of-age story what does it look like what are the characteristics of a coming-of-age story and I'm gonna give you some examples of a common coming-of-age story that you probably all have seen in your childhood okay so today is April 6th our lesson essential question that we're going to be focusing on for the rest of the week is what are the differences between childhood and adulthood and by the end of this week you're going to be able to identify the traits and characteristics of a coming-of-age story so let's get right into it so first trait of a coming-of-age story is that it includes a protagonist so a main character who is socially and emotionally maturing they also make discoveries about who they are as a person and in fact in the world the protagonist usually experiences at some point in the story a turning point or a point of no return this turning point is the characters transition from childhood to adulthood there's a very clear switch okay so at one point in the story they're a child they're behaving childishly and they're making childish decisions or they're being treated as a child and then usually there's a big like switch almost like the climax of the story right like there's no going back so usually this is an epiphany or sudden realization so when a protagonist has experiences a realization it's like an aha moment and then they are suddenly different and changed forever they're they're never the same so when you are talking about a coming-of-age story the diagram kind of looks very similar to a plot diagram so we're going to go over like the different stages and so hopefully you can make this connection visually okay so the very beginning is the Exodus and just like in a story okay like in the regular plot diagram so the protagonist usually in the beginning is youthful and naive she's he or she is very childish then the protagonist usually experiences some type of conflict or challenge that challenges her childhood okay and she or he continues to struggle with this so the protagonist is is continuously trying to overcome this obstacle then the turning point is indicated at the very top so the protagonist makes a very tough decision regarding his or her problem and changes as a result of this decision so usually this involves some type of loss of innocence the child usually realizes that the adult world is really difficult and complex and that childhood beliefs are really not real anymore usually there's some type of initiation or physical marker of this coming-of-age stories of the protagonist will experience an initiation that will mark their childhood and adulthood some examples include membership into an exclusive club or group sometimes it can be the completion of a challenge that they were invited to participate in maybe...
