a new pattern vcv okay who can tell me this vowel pattern again what is this called vcv very good that's a new vowel pattern vowel consonant vowel the best place to divide a word that follows this pattern is after the first vowel the accent belongs on the first syllable let me show you so after the first vowel after the first vowel after the first vowel okay and that pattern has accent mark in the first syllable okay and let's go ahead and code the rest all right and how do we code these vowels that's the second step you're going to take well there's no consonant after this a in the syllable so it's going to be a long macron okay a vowel y same here no consonant after it so it is a long and a combination and same with basin long a because it's not followed by a consonant on that side of the division line and this one is followed by a consonant so we're going to breathe that and that's how you code those words again i'm going to repeat i hate that light on there and i can't make it fix very well i'm going to repeat if you see a vowel consonant vowel pattern there are more than one way to divide them but most of the time you're going to do this you're going to break it up with a division line right after that first vowel and the first syllable will be accented okay let me show you a card to just kind of show you in another way focusing in just on the first way except i put it here it is we're just going to focus on the number one way okay a vowel consonant vowel pattern the first guess you have is because it's most of the time you're going to divide with the division line right after that first vowel and the accent mark goes on the first syllable such as the word baby okay don't worry about these other ones yet all right okay so let's get back to our worksheet look sticky notes everywhere so for the new sounds and words these words are going to follow the bcv pattern so here we go the first word is over like you go over the hill repeat over go ahead and write it and check with me the second word is when we just talked about and it's lady repeat good vowel consonant vowel pattern go ahead and write it and look up here in the third and final word with their new pattern in it is student repeat student go ahead and write it on yours student focus on one syllable at a time st u long u and then start over d and student go ahead and do your so i coded vowel to vowel and i saw the pattern vcv i went ahead and looked at the vowels next i saw the o is not followed by a consonant so it's macron the accent mark usually goes on the first saw two vowels with a consonant in the middle so vcv again i put my division line after the first vowel because that's usually what it is most of the time accented the first syllable the i is long because it's not followed by a consonant so i may ground it this i is briefed because it's followed by consonant s which is part of the digraph sh and that is the word irish you're from ireland you're irish and here's the third one i saw a vowel consonant vowel pattern again division line after the first vowel with an accent mark the u is makron and the i is briefed and that's unit if you're in the accent mark because that is usually what the vcv pattern does then i'm going to go in and look at the vowels the a is long because it's not followed by a consonant and the i is short because of the consonant n so now i know how to say this word this word is basin basin it's like the bottom of the sink so we're going to draw a line there and here's the next word now this time i see two vowels as well except i see two consonants between this is a review of vccv when we divide vccv patterns we divide between the consonants so right between those p's we're going to breathe the a and this is acting this y is acting like an e a long e and i know that because there's two syllables now i can sound out the word happy just like this little girl is happy number six ooh trigraph dge all right see that right away i know you don't hear the d you don't hear the e and the g is followed by an e so it's soft j so i put a dot that e is short breathed i know because that's when the dge is used after a short vowel and that is wedge okay i want you to go ahead and get caught up on all of those codes and then read this short paragraph on your own if there's a word you don't know go ahead and
