[Music] [Music] this video explains two primary types of fields dimensions and measures and how to add them to your look-amel project these are the types of fields you'll be using most of the time this video assumes you have a new lookamel project created and configured for version control and that you have a basic understanding of the looker ide dimensions and measures are added in view files so the first step is to navigate to your order items view most fields are dimension fields which correspond to columns in your underlying database table or are computed values based on other dimensions when you created your project looker generated a handful of dimensions in the order items view file you can see these dimensions here now add a new dimension let's create a new sale price tier dimension based off the existing sale price dimension this dimension will list ranges of sale prices for example all prices up to ten dollars will be grouped together then ten dollar and one cent through twenty dollars and so on dimensions and measures are defined through their parameters the editor gives you suggestions as you type but if you get stuck or need to see a list of different parameters and their attributes you can always refer to the quick help if you'd like to see a complete list of field types and parameters check out looker's documentation this dimension type is tier so you'll add that here next add the specific tiers for the dimension in this case it makes sense to group the tiers in increments of ten dollars next define the style parameter this parameter is specific to the tier type dimension and changes the way tiers appear in the ui in this case you want the style to be relational the sql parameter tells looker how to write the sql for the queries users run for this dimension you're telling the sql parameter to pull from the pre-existing sale price field now that you've finished adding a new dimension you can test to make sure it's working properly save your changes and then click the validate button it looks like you don't have any errors so now you can test the dimension in the users explorer you can quickly go to the explorer by clicking the caret next to the file title at the top of the ide and then selecting explore order items this file menu will only show views that have an explorer defined in the look ml next take a look at how the order items view in the ide compares to the order items explore in the ui you can see your new dimension here add the sale price and sale price to your dimensions and then hit run looks like it's working so far you can see that each sale price falls into the correct tier now remove the sale price dimension and add the count measure and hit run again the results...
