[Music] so yes is well good morning and welcome i just checked that the facebook seems to be working it says it's live so hopefully it's all working um i'll just twist it a little bit so it's a bit squarer there you are how's that for everyone at home um right um warm welcome to those of us in church uh it's not quite as warm as it would normally be for some reason i think the heating didn't quite work to the timer but we think that's probably because we had new electric meter so if you need to dance during the hymns you're allowed to do that but you're not allowed to sing um so to do dude but i think you're probably wrapped up warm because it was so cold out there anyhow uh other than that i don't think there are any uh major notices for this week there will be a lent course which will start the week after ash wednesday details to follow it will probably be called knowing jesus and making him known but it might have a slightly different title but that's basically the theme um i think everything should follow through from the order of service and from your hymnbooks so we're going to start by using the greeting from page four of the auditor service on the right hand side in the middle raising our eyes to heaven we pray almighty god your son has opened for us a new and living way into your presence give us new hearts and consonant wills to worship you in spirit and in truth through jesus christ our lord amen and our first hymn is uh hail to the lord's anointed mission praise number 204 i've put pictures on this week of the churchyard for those of you who haven't been able to see the churchyard with the snowdrops coming out and the hope of spring and hope that snowdrops and daffodils and things give us in our dark time so we sing with hope to god hail to the lord's anointed at home and listen to it in church [Music] foreign [Music] you [Music] ah [Music] so [Music] so we had a slight problem with the uh overlay of the uh laptop is it working correctly now yeah so uh hopefully that's all sorted on the recording now we come to our prayers of penitence from page five our lord jesus christ said the first commandment is this hear o israel the lord our god is the only lord you shall love the lord your god with all your heart with all your soul with all your mind and with all your strength the second is this love your neighbour as yourself there is no other commandment greater than these on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets amen lord have mercy the grace of god has dawned upon the world through our savior jesus christ who sacrificed himself for us to purify a people as his own let us then confess our sins christ came in humility to share our lives forgive our pride lord have mercy lord have mercy christ came with good news for all people forgive our silence lord have mercy lord have mercy christ came in love to world of suffering forgive our self-centeredness lord have mercy lord have mercy may god who loved the world so much that he sent his son to be our savior forgive us our sins and make us holy to serve him in the world through jesus christ our lord for the fourth sunday of epidemi god our creator who in the beginning commanded the light to shine out of darkness we pray that the light of the glorious gospel of christ may dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief shine into the hearts of all your people and reveal the knowledge of your glory in the face of jesus christ your son our lord amen we search for the old testament reading the reading is taken from deuteronomy chapter 18 beginning at verse 15. the lord your god will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers you must listen to him for this is what you asked of the lord your god at horeb on the day of the assembly when you said let us not hear the voice of the lord our god nor see the great fire anymore or we will die the lord said to me what they say is good i will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers i will put my words in his mouth and he will tell them everything i command him if anyone does not listen to my words the prophet speaks in my name i myself will call him to account but a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything i have not commanded him to say or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods must be put to death this is the word of the lord thanks be to god the new testament reading is taken from the book of 1 corinthians chapter 8 starting to read at verse 1. now i want to deal with food sacrifices to statues of gods we know that we all have knowledge but knowledge makes people proud while love builds them up those who think they know something still don't know as they should but whoever loves god is known by god so then here is what i say about eating food sacrifices to statues of gods we know that a god made by human hands is really nothing at all in the world we know that there is only one god they may be all so-called gods either in heaven or on earth in fact there are many gods and many lords but for us there is one god he is the father all things came from him and we live for him and there is only one lord he is jesus christ all things came because of him and we live because of him but not everyone knows this some people stink still think that statues of gods are real gods they might eat food sacrifice the statues of gods and when they do they think of the food sacrificed to real goats and because the people those people have weak sense of what is right and wrong they feel guilty but food doesn't bring us close to god we are no worse if we don't eat and we know better if we do eat but be careful how you use your rats be sure you don't cause someone weaker than you to fail and fall into sin suppose you with all your knowledge you're eating in the temple of one of those gods and suppose someone who has a weak sense of what is right and wrong sees you won't that person become bold and eat what is sacrificed the statues of gods if so then your knowledge destroys that weak brother or sister for whom christ died suppose you sin against them in this way then you harm their weak sense of what is right and wrong by doing this your sin against christ so suppose what we eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin then what should you do and what should i do i will never eat meat again in that way i will not cause them to fall and this is the word of god the lord thanks be to god so instead of a hymn between the readings we're going to have the gloria if you wish you might stand for the glory together we say glory to god in the highest and peace to his people on earth lord god heavenly king almighty god and father we worship you we give you thanks we praise you for your glory lord jesus christ only son of the father lord god lamb of god you take away the sin of the world have mercy on us you are seated at the right hand of the father receive our prayer for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen hallelujah the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we have seen his glory hallelujah hear the gospel of our lord jesus christ according to mark glory to you oh lord please do sit down no we normally say standing for the gospel don't we i'm just confused sorry about that but i wouldn't stand up again it's fine i'm sure mark chapter 1 beginning to read from verse 21 jesus and his companions went to the town of capernaum when the sabbath day came he went into the synagogue and began to teach the people were amazed at his teaching for he taught with real authority quite unlike the teachers of religious law suddenly a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out why are you interfering with us jesus of nazareth have you come to destroy us i know who you are the holy one of god but jesus reprimanded him be quiet come out of the man he ordered that the evil spirit screams threw the man into convulsion and then came out of him amazement gripped the audience and they began to discuss what had happened what sort of new teaching is this they asked exactly it has such authority even evil spirits obey his orders the news about jesus spread quickly throughout the entire region of galilee this is the gospel of the lord let's pray dear lord we ask that as we consider your words and your life so they may have authority in our lives and help us in jesus name amen we were hearing about the beginning of john's gospel how john wanted to write his gospel in order that those who read it might believe and in believing have life and he tells of the signs and wonders of jesus as part of the way that he is going to help people to believe mark last week was driving us forward because he wants an urgency for people to believe and he starts his gospel after that moment of urgency with the calling of the first disciples with this story of jesus in the synagogue and jesus speaking with authority and showing authority by his ability to overcome evil spirits by his healing of a man who was possessed by an evil spirit and there is some argument around in the church and has been for some while that the way that we need to allow god's authority to be seen in the world today is through both of these things through the reality of god speaking words and the word that he has already spoken through the bible through scripture through the teaching of of christ and the understandings of that that have developed over time and also through uh the miraculous and the power of god working uh to overcome evil and to see that happening and often that's kind of put forward as it needs to be miracles that are the thing that we have and it may be that miracles are part of what needs to be uh the way of the church it clearly was part of what was what jesus is life but let me tell you a story which illustrates uh some of the pros and cons of that approach and the need for us to try and find a way of dealing with this and working out how to allow god's authority into our churches into our world in an effective way today somebody was recently telling me the story of how they were healed how they were miraculously healed from a cancer as a teenager and how they were able because of the healing of god uh to go on and get also go all sorts of ways through their life and they talk to the struggles of being of having cancer and the prayers of their family and the prayers of their church and and all these kind of things and the amazing surgeons and the people who worked so hard in the medical profession to enable this miracle to happen they passed very quickly over the other people in the same ward as teenagers who had also died and didn't really mention that some of those people probably were praying praying and seeking that they might live and that they might be healed but they weren't and any reality of miracles needs i think to take that on board it also needs to take on board something which is in this story in this story the man who jesus heals is probably the man you didn't want in church he's kind of got an evil spirit he's probably the person who keeps saying silly things or causing havoc within the church when he comes to the synagogue the synagogue leader was probably going on not him again and we've got this good speaker this week we really don't want him to get up and say anything but he does get up and say anything and he's in opposition to jesus and yet jesus heals him and so this high whole idea that we who somehow pray more effectively uh somehow a more connected to god might receive healing is debunked in this story and other stories in the scriptures and we can't go to a picture that if miracles are to happen that somehow they happen to those who are those closest to god and ask the most those miracles may happen and they may happen to either the good or the bad because god loves all of his creation and he also loves all of the creation no matter what happens to them and we have to reconcile this when we are trying to say how do we see the authority of god are really working in in uh effective ways this week a friend of mine who's a christian uh wrote a facebook post and he said uh i we announced the birth and death of our daughter it's a reality that can hurt christians as much one of my friends was on a television programme about the restoration thing wasn't he with his rocking horse around christmas time uh because the rocking horse belonged to his daughter who died and yet he is christian who leads a church and has come to understand how god's power and authority works and i think that the authority and power of god is something that is there and it's seen in the words of jesus and the integrity of jesus and sometimes in miracles but most often in the reality that god brings inner healing to all one of the things that i think we recognize that possibly mark did when he was writing this gospel is that even those jesus healed all eventually died when mark was writing the gospel he probably was still as many of the time were thinking that jesus was about to return that many who had uh come into faith were going to go straight to heaven without dying we now know at a distance of uh 2000 years that that is not what happened that even those who jesus healed had illness and things went wrong later in their lives that the context in which we are to understand god's authority is a context where all of us will have struggles and all of us will probably die and that will be a difficult thing no matter how old we are no matter how much we have faith it will be difficult for those around about us at various at that point so our understanding of god's authority and the authority that he brings i think is where we see the reality of god bringing healing and inner inner direction and inner purpose which creates the character that lasts beyond the grave and the miracles of jesus were used to draw people in to that understanding the understanding that he had power to help and to heal and the understanding that we as christian people have a role in helping and healing and bringing that into a truth and the integrity that we have as jesus as we hear god's words and as we respond to them as we learn to be not not those who as christians are at war but those who are known as christians because they love one another that's what jesus asks he says you will know you will be known because you love one another it's so sad the reality of the way that the church has developed down the centuries and still sometimes today is that there is hatred and division amongst christian people of course we'll have disagreements but it shouldn't lead to hatred and division it shouldn't lead to a situation where we are trying to have power over one another and control one another that authority lies to god god is the one who decides the truth and we need to be those who have faith in god not in our understanding and allow god to be the one who judges not ourselves and the teaching of christ helps us to become like that the power of christ working in our lives helps us to become like that those little miracles that happen when we pray because surely we should pray and surely we should ask god to bring about effective change in our lives those things that then build us and help us to grow as those who have love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness and self-control those are the things that produce the fruits and that's where the authority of jesus i think is really seen when mark speaks of jesus coming to that synagogue and speaking with authority i think it was because of his character because somehow not only what he said had power but the ability to integrate what he said with the reality of life that he wasn't shirking from the whole situation that were people were facing that he was open to the honest interpretation and understanding and struggles that people have and that he engaged with them as somebody who loved them and that gave to him an authority that these early disciples wanted to tell others about they wanted to say this man is different he has something special and if we go to him and begin to learn about those things and allow them to affect us then we can experience that authority and yes we should pray to him that he will bring healing but we should pray knowing that it is by his grace alone by his goodness and his decision that these things may or may not happen but certainly we should pray that we become transformed by whatever the outrageous fortunes of life throw at us by the power of god that through those outrageous fortunes and our walk with god we are able able to discover a fullness and ability to live that we can share with others and enable them to grow in the living and to grow in relationship and to grow in hope of everlasting life so we pray we may know the authority of god in our lives in fullness and in strength amen let us say and declare our faith in this god father son and holy spirit we might stand for the apostles creed together we say i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth i believe in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended to the dead on the third day he rose again he ascended into heaven he is seated at the right hand of the father and he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting amen we set o'neill for the prayers of intercession lord of life lord of all authority lord who loves each one we come to you at a time when all human authority is seen to be insufficient when presidents and prime ministers archbishops and doctors do their best and yet lord we know that it is you to whom we may to whom we may come and whom we must come and we thank you for your undying love in christ for your purposes for the whole world and so lord we just ask you at this time as well as healing power for doctors as well as wisdom for leaders of the nations as well as grace for the leaders of the churches that you will show your mercy in ways which go beyond our understanding and that many many people may come to find in jesus afresh and anew his miraculous power the power of the risen christ in relationship to each one of his created of god's created people across the world and here too we pray lord for a renewal an outpouring for a recovery for those parts of the world which are especially afflicted by the pandemic for those parts of the world which have grown casual and expecting comfort and ease and riches for those places in poverty lord in your mercy hear our prayer but we do pray at this time particularly lord for any known to us for people in this locality in this village in these three villages here we pray for those who are stressed and wearied by having too much to do and those who seem to have nothing to do for those who are lonely we ask lord at this time and we thank you that we do see the beginning of a recovery of relationships of love of the spirit of communities in small places and lord we ask that this may spread here and everywhere and that people may sense behind human love that there is your love that fills them and renews them their bodies their souls and their spirits so lord we come to you asking for your mercy at this time on all whom on the whole world and on particularly on those close to us physically spiritually those we know now and those we have known in the name of the lord and savior of all jesus christ amen we're going to sing again it's number 761 uh from mission praise went to the world our savior came oh right yes sorry it says here emitting versus four and five as as john pointed out uh we're meeting verses four and five uh from number 761. [Music] bye now [Music] now [Music] word made flesh life of the world in your incarnation you embraced our poverty by your spirit may we share in your riches amen we use a thanksgiving prayer g from thanks he broke it and gave it to them saying take eat this is my body which is given for you do this in remembrance of me at the end of supper taking the cup of wine again he gave you thanks and said drink this all of you this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me great is the mystery of faith christ has died christ is risen christ will come again so father we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross we remember his dying and rising in glory and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand pour out your holy spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation may they be for us the body and blood of your dear son as you eat and drink have mercy grant us therefore gracious lord so to eat the flesh of your dear son jesus christ and to drink his blood that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body and our souls washed through his most precious blood and that we may ever more dwell in him and he in us i'll bring the communion to you you are allowed to receive in both bread and wine what happens is that i take away for and dip the wafer into the wine and then give it to you having previously washed my hands and kept the wine and the wafers in such a way that i can't breathe on them during the consecration and so on if you would like to receive communion please put out two hands if you'd like to see bread and wine and if you would just want to receive just the bread put out one hand and that should work well oh so
