hello creatives I'm Johanna pen from the creative pen comm and today I'm talking about why you would use different names different author names for different brands or when you might choose to use a pseudonym so first of all I currently write under three different author names which represent three different brands which also represent three different audiences for my writing so Johanna pen who is with you now write nonfiction for authors so how to market a book is one of those examples I also write thrillers as j-f pen say map of Shadows is a dark fantasy thriller I sometimes co-write under either of these names but certainly my jf pen name is darker I travel a lot for my research I write about supernatural things jf Penn who I'm sure you'll meet at some point I might bring her on to do a video on jfn but I kind of have this darker alter ego who is not so happy and smiley but that's jf Penn and then I have penny Appleton which is a sweet romance pen name that I co write with my mum definition of sweet romances no sex scenes very important if you co-write with a family member who is your mom obviously if you co-write with your partner then you can do whatever you like but so that's how I have three different names doing three different things now one of the very important reasons I think to use different author names in this age of big data and AI is that the stores like Amazon who use algorithms to direct readers to the next book are very much working on metadata which is the data associated with your book that can include your title it can include the categories you're in but it will also use data points around reviews and everything they know about those readers very importantly I am NOT going to use the same I don't in fact that what there won't be much of a crossover between readers of penny Appleton the sweet contemporary romance and this is a more mature couple for example and map of shadows which is actually more of a why a crossover type dark fantasy with a edge of horror in it as well so basically what I want the algorithms to be able to do is direct my books to the right kind of reader in the hope that they will read more and you can see this in action in the also bought so if you go to your books page on Amazon and look in the also bought people who bought this also bought that that's what you need to be thinking now I know there is some crossover between Joanna pen and some of the fiction but in terms of those three audiences how much do they overlap the overlap is quite small so that's the first reason you would think about different names and of course...
