just got done working on creating functions that received a single parameter so you passed it one value it receives the one value and dealt with it on its own I passed it number it received it and it decided to call it none so for this one we've got couple things we've got to go deal with let's go ahead and write a calculate sum function let's go ahead and define it calculate sum calculate sum is going to receive two values x and y and we're going to do the math so I'll calculate some a equals x plus y okay and then we will turn a now I could just print a I'm going to go ahead and we'll deal with the whole return concept now at the same time so I've created a function gave it a name it receives two values 1 comma 2 I call them X and I call them Y colon whatever I feel like calling them and those two values those variables x and y they only exist within this function so I use them from the calculation store the result in a and I'm returning a back to where it's called okay so go ahead and I'm gonna copy this whole thing change it from plus to minus it's gonna calculate some it's calculate difference okay copy the whole thing again paste it down here calculate product product will be multiplication let's save myself quite a bit of typing just by copying pasting and they end up being very similar similar functions okay so a exists only in this function this a in here that's a different a it only exists within that function okay so when I call these go ahead say print the know what they're gonna want specifically for output let's just say some of the given values is [Music] , and it's calculate some what did we pass past it value 1 comma value 2 right here I received value 1 and value 2 and I passed them to that function so let's go ahead and copy that line up code come down here do the same thing the difference between the given values is calculate difference come down to this last one the product of the given values is calculate product let's go ahead and run it see what we get enter the first value five American value nine it says that I've got an issue on line 21 print the sum so it seems I've got a little bit of a typo go ahead and make sure make sure that I don't have the same problem on the others by pasting those in okay go ahead run code again for nine the sum of 4/9 is 13 the difference between the given values is negative 5 that's interesting it's a negative number I would have to make sure that's a positive number regardless and the product is 36 let's see what it does it says some good three out of three you know when we look at it I'm not happy with it being the difference isn't negative five it's just five but depending on the order that we entered them it is what it is so it went through it did the tests and we know when we look at it that I would have to convert this to a positive number we got functionality we can use it's beyond the scope what we're doing now though so just understand the focus of what we're dealing with here we defined a function deff gave it a name and in the parentheses we defined what it required now in programming there's some things we need to know if we're going to use functions or methods we need their name what they require from us and the form that it must be in and what does it do for me or what's it going to give me in return and when I look at this I know that there's a function that's been created I know its name I need to know what it requires for me and in this instance it requires two arguments words numbers that's important if I pass it two strings this won't work so I need to know then and in this instance I have it actually returning a value back to me I could have taken this print statement and just said the sum of the values is and put a print statement there and all I did then was just call calculate sum so we want to buy it a little bit differently but it's I want you to get an understanding of the fact that we are going to have to return values at some point so we test it out got a good value on it and I said it's happy with what we've done
