their dream is to get money and once you get money you don't have any other dream and the money causes them to go crazy so some people they lose control of the money or money controls them but if you have a goal after like my dream i'm giving example the person is giving example if my goal or my dream is to have money so that i can do one two three four you you are going to be rich on purpose to do certain particular things so that is something very good to consider so when you are thinking about coming to america going to france going to switzerland norway netherlands german australia new zealand canada when you are thinking about going to those countries what are you going to do what is your goal to go there why should you go there because if you don't have the goal to go there like what you want to achieve there you might have the worst situation the worst experience because you'll be excited now i'm in america today i'm in new york tomorrow i'm in samford i'm in california that's all so what you have end up having a lot of nice photos in the from the mall you'll have nice photos just to show people on facebook on instagram but if you have a goal you have to work on your goal yes your goal will change once you are here there are certain things will change i agree but how to succeed is immigrant so first of all how to define the concept of immigrant because we usually sometimes usually tell say like immigrant immigrant immigrant meaning that any person who is here in america for instance is immigrant like coming here yes that is but only to go to the immigration concept immigrants are people who are coming to live here on a permanent basis with immigrant visas meaning they're going to become permanent resident or green card holders down the road they become u.s citizens so those are immigrant those who are coming as a student those who are coming easy towards you those who are coming is uh maybe temporary worker they are called the non-immigrant meaning that they are coming here after maybe coming to study for three four years then going back to your home country so but on this discussion i will assume everybody coming here whether you're coming for permanent residence permanent how are you going to succeed here in the united states even like in europe but unless specifically your question is united states i will start with the the mistakes first of all people we are doing number one mistake is when we are coming here we don't want to write down a reason i would say you have to write down what you wanted to achieve here in america we usually do some teasing in the sometimes we tell people oh if you are coming to america the first port of entry the first airport you arrive there is the airport i mean at the airport you go there there is uh air conditioning like wherever that air condition comes out it takes out your dream because many people forget once you arrive here sometimes we forget what we really wanted to do and here i mean do you want to come in america you plan to come to stay for one year or do you want to stay here until you die or do you want to just come here get some uh work study whatever get the money go back to your home country that will be able to define what you will be able to accomplish so if you are coming here is to start study hard get good grades do internship do something that means when you go back to your home country you have all these experiences but let's say if you have come here is let's say is a green card holder that means technically here is your permanent area so how are you going to achieve so from day one you need to have the goals like what type of friends you need to have yes you are immigrant yes you need to have some friends but don't come here and have all your friends are from nigeria all your friends from tanzania you are all eating garlic food jollof pilau what is going to help you it doesn't help you you need to also have friends in different areas different profession friends who are americans friends who are from other countries to friends who are above you so that you can they can inspire they can try to help you give some good information for you to be able to succeed that's number one because at the beginning you'll not be able to if you want anything to go to a lawyer you need to have getting some advice from people from youtube from uh like but the good thing now is youtube is giving all this advice but you can get some friends but what kind of advice do they know what they are going to advise you so need to have some good friends that's different from how we do here there is women right women right is just at highest level how you treat the children beating children whatever so there are things you have to avoid because you might come here to wife succe spouse it can cause everything you can go to to to prison and here is different from africa again another thing like i'm giving first of all things to avoid you don't come here to start impregnating women you implement someone you'll be paying charity support even fifty percent of your salary can go to child support and you pay that until eight uh 18 years if you don't pay you are going to jail so here is no joke so there are things first of all you have to put your way then there are things you need to plan now okay in order to be able to succeed here in the u.s as an immigrant i have to integrate i have to be in a position to compete with the people who are here for me i came here i wanted to live here only permanent until i die so if that's my goal what did i do number one i have to find qualifications i can compete with any american here in the united states number one i get i decided to get education here in america so i have master's degree from the one among the best universities in pc studies in america university of san diego very big nice university so for that case if i go to apply for a job where did you go to school i don't say i want to invest for the salary but they do not notice that salam i said i came from i i studied my my master's at the university of san diego in california so you say number one you have to transform your education your credentials to american system i don't say that your bachelor your master's it doesn't count i say you have to transform here if you are a doctor if you are a nurse go and take a certification here if you are attack you are doing tax you have to land tax system in america the tax system here is different from the tax system in kenya or ghana or tanzania or uganda so that is something else so you have to get the good credentials education here in america so that people will be easier to connect with you remember yes we have our accent we have other things but it doesn't oh i started from universal kenyatta universities what is kenyatta people cannot even pronounce kenyatta here in america so what you need to do is just go and get a certification if you if you you you are accountant going to get cpa here or get whatever if you h human resource officer get some credentials certification here that's number one number two in order to succeed uh you have to find what are your strengths and what are your weaknesses when you're looking for jobs for instance for me i'm very i'm not a good into uh change i mean there are people who are what you come with is that that is there are some people when they speak english they speak you know whatever they can change even if it's sounding to be like americans i'm not it's not me here they don't care but i'm just assuming myself if i'm going to find a job with customer service i'm giving example if i'm going to find a job in custody to become a customer service like to be on the phone and talking to people with my accent will the customer enjoy or like to stay on the phone with me because myself if i get someone with someone some accent i don't understand i say can you transfer to someone else and some people take it to personal it's not personal you have to know what is your strength so for me in all jobs i've ever applied here in america i don't apply the jobs which i'll be on the phone all the time because i'm i know my accent is a little bit thicker uh and it's not common to americans to be able to use and if someone is only busy and you are coming to start speaking african accent plus a british background you are talking what are you talking about so sometimes you come to have difficulties so for me i look the jobs which they putting me myself to like i know these are my weakness this is my strength i'm looking for the jobs which these are my strengths i like teaching i'm good at teaching so most of my jobs at the beginning we're teaching at the colleges and other jobs yeah so so that is something you need to see so for me again yes i did all these kind of jobs but i wanted to go to the highest level of success here in america so for me i joined the military i decided to join the u.s navy why did they join the navy there are so many reasons but among the few reasons why i decided to join the military is because there are so many benefits by saving in the us military number one is to get a house if you want to purchase a home in the u.s you have to pay what we call down payment at 20 percent of the wealth of the house the price of the house you have to pay cash i don't have that money so what did i do if you join the military if you want to buy a house you don't pay the down payment so for me i know some people have seen some photos of my home here which is the price which he purchases which is about 160 000 us dollar i didn't pay even a single dollar i mean for the price of the house i paid 1 000 u.s dollar just for the inspection of the house and just like 500 for cleaning and everything so think that i go to the house for 55 1000 usd basically yes i'll pay only monthly basis is a loan but you see that is one thing but if it's immigrant and decided like oh i don't want to go to the military or whatever i don't go it's okay it's up to you but it will take you more many years to come to the point you can reach what we call american dream of owning the home so for me i found that as a shortcut but what if i want to go for masters i want to go for but let's say i want to do phd or something you don't have bachelor you want to go for bachelor if you sell you have something in the military they pay for your tuition and they give you the money for housing so the school is paid your school fees you'll pay a hundred percent and you get at least 1 500 or 2 000 depending where you are for the course of housing so that is something else you have to consider they are going to do that then if you are looking for jobs any federal job you apply first of any job priority is given to the veterans but is if you apply for a federal job if you apply for federal job let's say a federal government has announced this job they want someone with a bachelor degree minimum of accounting and they come 100 people out of those 100 people let's say uh 70 have master's degree already and the rest of mars but there is one person who served in the u.s military who is a veteran has a bachelor degree if they say the minimum bachelor degree they don't care if you have phd they don't care whatever they will take the person with a minimum who is a veteran so for me i'm looking for all these kind of areas but again in the us yes we say uh when you apply for a job sometimes the people are discriminatory or they can prefer maybe a white person or black for black whatever those kind of things i agree and i know even in our countries we do that if you come from this tribe with this name is a christian name or is a muslim name all others kind of think they play that is the word we live in whether you like it or not but when i apply for a job and they look on my my my my my my resume there this guy is a u.s veteran the game is changing so they don't see me as immigrant like these guys coming from africa they see this guy has defended has protected the american country so this guy we are saying thank you for your service we are giving you this job so these are the basic things which i started with on my own how to succeed in u.s so in a very nutshell i can say if you want to succeed here try as very soon as possible to avoid things which will jeopardize your future get your credentials here if you have opportunity to go to the military go and if you want to change the profession you go to the medical field medical field pays a lot than in social sciences that is good but also try to learn so many things quicker money management credit card what credit score how to purchase even if you're not planning to purchase a home from day one you have to know how to get a a home loan how do you need to get uh the the auto loan the car loan how do you get those kind of things you have to know everything in the beginning just like how do i do you start to buy stocks i didn't know all the afternoon i do not know how to buy stocks but i wish i could i could know all these kind of things earlier maybe now i could be in a different uh zone so those are the things i can say how are you going to start and succeed in us there are so many things but there are things you have to avoid from the start so that you can be able to have the greater future i know that is a very long question uh and there are so many things i haven't talked about those are the few things you needed to understand and obviously the person you marry will have impact on that uh if we'll be able to support some of you both of you are hard workers taking good care of your family yeah otherwise you might end up having marrying someone and it will be a disaster andy
