Htap Application 2016-2019 Form

hello everyone and welcome to step up Utah's 2019 2020 FAFSA walkthrough my name is Jacob Newman and I'm a paying for college expert with step up Utah I'm going to guide you through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA for the 2019 2020 school year so that you can complete the FAFSA quickly and accurately the FAFSA is the way that students are able to access grants free money federal work-study earned money and federal student loans borrowed money we're going to go through to make sure that you understand each step of the process so you can complete it in a quick easy way first of all when you go to fafsa.gov you're going to see this log into the fafsa page if you are the student you're going to click here on the I am the student button it will automatically prompt you for what is called your FSA ID if you do not have an FSA ID take the time now to create this FSA ID at FSA ided gov the FSA ID acts as your legal signature and is the way that you will import your tax information directly into the FAFSA both student and parent will need an FSA ID to be able to sign the FAFSA digitally and also import their taxes directly from the IRS since I am using a demonstration site today I'm going to say that I am the parent it's going to ask for some demographic information if you use your FSA ID you will provide this demographic information in creating your FSA ID it's going to ask you to confirm the information that you provide if you're going this route you go ahead and hit next this is saying that you will use this for good federal purposes that you're using it to access your education and when you come to here it's going to ask which FAFSA you want to do for those who are going to be starting school in the 2019 2020 school year you will start the 2019 2020 FAFSA the save key is in case you get locked out or you need to come back or you need to give this to your parent to be able to complete the FAFSA when you are not with your parent it's any kind of password from 4 to 12 characters so I usually recommend like a PIN number these are some frequently asked questions about the FAFSA and this provides good information if you're doing it on your own and you have some questions I'm going to go ahead and click Next through this so you'll see at the top it's going to talk about your progress so we'll start with student demographics will move along the school selection dependency status parent demographics financial information sign and submit and confirmation so you're going to confirm the information on this page if you have a middle initial you're going to include your middle initial remember that you can't change your social security number so it's very important to enter your social security number correctly this is going to ask for your permanent mailing address as well as your email address make sure that you use a permanent email address rather than a school email address because this is something that you'll use throughout your college career it's going to ask if you've lived in your state for at least five years in some states this is the residency requirement other states have different residency requirements if not that's okay it will just prompt you to indicate how long you have lived in your state so are you male or female this question is gender as assigned at birth and this will come back later when we talk about the selective service or the draft in order to be able to receive federal financial aid all males between the ages of 18 and 26 must register with a Selective Service Administration and we'll talk about that again in just a second it's gonna ask you to enter your telephone number and your driver's license number your driver's license number is important because this will help to prove residency but if you don't have a driver's license that's okay it's going to ask for your marital status as of today and it's going to ask if you're a United States citizen for this there are three options I am a US citizen or US national no I am an eligible non-citizen so this would be people who have a social security number and a green card so or if they're a refugee or a nasai Lee and then there's the final option no I am NOT a citizen or an eligible non-citizen this is coming back to that Selective Service System or the draft like I mentioned earlier if the student selects no it gives them the opportunity to register with a Selective Service System if for example a student is no longer identifying with the gender that was on their birth certificate so if they're non-binary or they identify as female now and they do not believe that they should have to register with a Selective Service System they can follow up directly with the Selective Service Administration all right this is gonna ask about high school completion status and even if students have taken any kind of concurrent enrollment or anything while they're in high school they're gonna say that they've never attended college it's going to ask what degree or certificate you're working on we always recommend that students indicate that they'd be considered for work-study work studies or students and get jobs on campus and work to earn money like a paycheck it's a really great opportunity for students are you a foster youth or were you at any time in the foster care system this question will come back later when we talk about dependency or if students need to provide parental information on the FAFSA highest school completed by parent 1 this refers to birth parents if you don't know you can just put other or unknown this is going to ask about high school so we're gonna put in Michael Jordan's high school you can go ahead and search here and I'll come up with high school whoops I'm gonna go ahead and press next now you can send your FAFSA to up to ten colleges or universities so it'll ask if you know the school's federal student code I can never really remember that so I often just search by state I'm gonna do Salt Lake City and do Salt Lake Community College here's Salt Lake Community College while I'm on here I'm going to take a look at my other options obviously I'm going to add more schools into University of Utah as well so will indicate that you have two schools selected now it's going to ask about your housing plans so this is important for the school to be able to know what your cost of attendance is going to be because if you're living on campus or off-campus or with a parent your cost of attendance is going to vary a little bit so I'm gonna say that Michael is going to live with parents in both cases now we get to dependency status so dependency status there are a series of questions that will determine if you need to provide parental information on the FAFSA so let's go through these together were you born before January 1st 1996 so basically are you 24 years of age or older as of today are you married we be pursuing a masters or doctorate program or or any kind of graduate certificate so are you going to answer no for all those for him do you or will you have children who received more than half of their support from you between July 1st 2019 and June 30th 2020 so remember the important thing on this is not if you just have children but if they receive more than half of your support have their support from you do you have dependents other than your children or spouse who live with you and who received more than half of your support from you now and through June 30th 2020 so this would be maybe like a little brother or a little sister or something else that may come up and Kate know on this and now here's a checklist so we have active duty in the US forces veteran of the US Armed Forces at any time since you turn age 13 we're both your parents deceased we're you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court as determined by a court in the state of your legal residence are you or were you an emancipated minor and are you in a legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence this needs to be a formal court arrangement not an informal custody arrangement so I'm gonna put none of the above on or after July 1st 2018 were you homeless or were you self-supporting and at risk of being homeless I'm gonna put no to that one so based on my answers to those questions I am considered a dependent student if I had been able to answer yes to one of those questions I would have been considered an independent student which means I would not have to provide parental information on the FAFSA there might be some instances in which there are special circumstances that means that you aren't able to provide parental information but you feel like you should be considered an independent student in that case you can say I am unable to provide information about my parents and then you'll need to follow up with a financial aid office at the college or university that you are planning to attend in this case I will provide information about my parents you so now it's going to ask about some parent demographics so your parents can fill this part out because they might know this a little better so we're gonna say that Michael Jordan's parents are married and we're gonna say they got married in January of 2000 to enter the parents social security numbers so there's parent one and then there's parent too just make sure you remember who you put as parent 1 and parent to you and that will come in when we go to sign and submit the FAFSA social first name first initial last name date of birth this is for parent too it's going to ask for your parents email address it's going to ask if your parents have lived in Utah for at least five years in some states this applies for residency now it's going to ask about your household size so this is important that students read this carefully so that they can accurately count the number in their household so it's going to gray out the areas that you can't change so your parents yourself and then it's going to say your parents other children if your parents provide more than half the support and they can answer no to all those dependency questions that we answered earlier so we're gonna say he has two other siblings and then if there were other people who live with their parent with the parents who your parents provide more than half of the support and they will continue to do so through the 2019 2020 period that's mentioned on here in this case I'm going to put their zero and that would be the total household size now it's gonna ask for the number in college between July 1st 2019 and June 30th 2020 so in this case we're just going to say that Michael is going to be the only one in college and remember do not include your parents all right for the 2019 2020 FAFSA now we're going to provide some financial information and for this FAFSA we're going to use tax information from 2017 so in most cases most people have already completed their 2017 taxes so we're gonna say that Michaels parents were married filing jointly and they did not file a Puerto Rican or a foreign tax return it's going to ask if you want to use IR s data retrieval tool we always recommend that people use this because it will make sure that your financial information is accurate as reported to the IRS make sure that when you use the IRS data retrieval tool that the address and the information that you'd list when the tool comes up matches exactly as it appears on your 2017 taxes otherwise it may not work since this is a demonstration site I won't be able to use the IRS data retrieval tool and there are some instances where you might not be able to use it for example if there's been a change in your family's marital status or there's some other circumstances as well so I'm gonna go ahead and press next it's going to ask me if I really don't want to use the IRS data retrieval tool I don't press no thanks I'm gonna say that my parents the parents filed a 1040 they made this much money it's gonna ask what parent one made and what parent two made so again you're gonna want to remember whose parent one is parent two and this is really helpful if both parents work if you have the w-2s from their respective employers so that you can see what they earn from working since on a form 1040 if they married filing jointly they will not break out the income by parents it's gonna ask for the amount of your parents taxes and their exemptions and again if you ever have any questions or you're not sure what it means you can always click on this little question mark box and it will bring up some helpful hints that you can use go ahead and press next it's gonna ask for some more financial information so ask for things like combat pay student college grant and scholarships for your parents educational credits IRA deductions tax except interest on tax portions of IRA distributions untaxed portion of pensions some of these will be transferred from the IRS and if your information is transferred from the IRS you will be unable to change it it will simply be grayed out and say transferred from IRS to keep things simple here I'm just gonna say they didn't have any of these child support your parents paid because the divorce or separation as a result of a legal requirement that's pretty common so make sure you include that as well that's child support paid earnings from a work under a cooperative education program offered by a college taxable earnings from need-based employment programs such as federal work-study if you're a student and you received federal work-study in the past year remember this is for your parents but this question is going to come up again for you in the student financial information section so stay tuned for that now it's going to ask about child support received and housing or other food or food or other living allowances paid remember the military clergy or others payments to tax deferred pension or retirement plans other untaxed income not reported again if you have questions and sometimes parents will have questions about things like these click on the question mark and it will help you to know what to include and what not to include veterans not education benefits such as disability death pension or dependency and indemnity compensation VA educational work-study allowances a lot of these are not particularly common but it's good to read through them just to make sure assets this is a very common question that we get about the FAFSA so what is considered an asset so I'm gonna hit no here so we can see the breakdown I'm gonna hit yes I mean so we can see the breakdown so assets are cash savings and checking accounts investments including real estate but not your parents home so investments don't include things like your parents home they don't include any retirement savings but if your parents had an investment property that would be included in here and then what is the net worth of your parents current businesses or and or investment farms so don't include a family farm that you live on or operate or a family business with 100 or fewer full-time or full-time equivalent employees so usually what the FAFSA will do is it will calculate an amount that it considers to be what you might have in assets and if considering these categories the assets don't exceed that amount you can go ahead and click no now read carefully at the top for when it says parent and when it says student now we're going to be asking about student information so this is student financial information so we're gonna say that Michael completed his 2017 taxes he didn't file a Puerto Rican or a foreign tax return again it's going to prompt him to use IRS data retrieval tool which we highly recommend but since this is a demonstration site it will be unable to use the IRS data retrieval tool we're gonna say that Michael file the 1040ez it will tell you exactly on which line to find these items to which is really nice gonna ask how much he earned from working it's gonna ask for his income tax paid and his exemptions then it's going to ask the same financial information that it asked for from the parents so any scholarship or grant aid reported to the IRS in your income education credits IRA deductions other things like that for simplicity sake we're going to say that he didn't have any of these child support you paid so remember you in this case refers to the student earnings from work under a cooperative education program offered by a college this is the one that's really important for students who are renewing their FAFSA if you had a federal work-study award in the previous school year you want to make sure that you report your federal work-study earnings right here because the FAFSA doesn't want to penalize you for having federal work-study so we'll take that out of the calculation of need so make sure you report that if you have those again the same financial information that we asked for from the parents so child support received for all children housing food and other living allowances paid to the military clergy and others money received were paid on your behalf reported not elsewhere on this form payments to tax deferred pension workers comp disability veteran education benefits again a lot of students wouldn't necessarily have these we're gonna go ahead and press next now it's gonna ask for the student breakdown of cash saving and checking so I'm gonna say he has three hundred dollars in his cash saving and checking investments I'm gonna say that nothing their investment farms or businesses or say nothing there it's going to ask if you are a preparer this is if you pay someone to help you file the FAFSA you should never have to pay to help to get help filing your FAFSA because the first word in FAFSA is free so I'm gonna go ahead and hit no here then it's going to provide a summary of all of the information that you provided so this is a good chance to look over everything make sure that everything is accurate make sure that you reported everything to the best of your ability one thing that's important to remember is the parent demographics sometimes that can be easy to mix up if you have questions about which parent you should report on the FAFSA because that can be a very common question federal student aid has created an infographic to help you know which parent to report in case you have divorced parents or your parents are separated and again you can always hit that little question mark button next to any question to get additional information again we always recommend using the IRS data retrieval tool because that will make it so all of your information in terms of financial side will be accurate as reported to the IRS use that for the student as well it's just good to review and then you can just hit next now remember on the student signature and on the parent signature both need to sign the FAFSA using their FSA ID if your parents don't have a social security number so they can't create an FSA ID that's okay on the parent demographic section you're just going to put all zeros for the social security number it's gonna ask you to confirm that's okay don't worry about that and then at the end there's a different way that the parents will sign but I'm going to show you first of all just what it's going to look like if you're signing with an FSA ID so I'm going to hit provide student signature this is the statement that indicates that you will use this for educational purposes and that you'll pay back any loans that you take out etc then it's going to ask the student to enter in their FSA ID their username and password since this is a demonstration site I can't create an FSA ID but if I could I could I would just hit sign the FAFSA and that would be my digital signature and then on the parents signature portion I need to say one parent needs FSA ID so I'm gonna say I'm gonna signs parent one they're gonna agree that they provided accurate information of the best of their ability they're gonna enter in their FSA ID again if your parent can't create an FSA ID you're gonna hit other options to sign and submit and you're going to hit print a signature page this is nice because if you decide you did something wrong it's going to ask you to confirm before you print the signature page for the student I'm going to hit another way to sign we're going to try to submit without signatures just so you can see what the confirmation page looks like all right usually if you had both parents or both student and parent with an FSA ID you'd be able to submit it and it would get processed and the signatures would be allowed remember that if you submit without signatures your application is not complete so it's very important that you have student and parent signatures on the parents if your parents don't have that FSA ID and they can't create one there's going to be a mailing address that you need to mail the signature page to make sure you get that mailed promptly so I'm going to go ahead just so you can see the confirmation page and submit my FAFSA now all right it's going to provide a confirmation number and some details of what's going to happen next you receive an email version of this page in three to five business days you'll receive an email as is your FAFSA was processed and it will be used for this and will be made available to the schools that you selected on your FAFSA you'll also receive something called a student aid report which will contain all this information as well since this is a demonstration site it doesn't actually give your expected Family Contribution this is an index number that the federal government uses to determine financial need but it looks like based on the eligibility criteria it looks like Michael would be eligible for some of that Pell Grant as well as some Direct Stafford loans you won't receive a detailed list of everything that you're eligible for until you have applied to college and you've been accepted at that College and they produce what's called a financial aid award letter that will outline all of the grants scholarships and loans that you're eligible for it's good to review this page just if you have any questions and then you're done if you have any further follow-up questions after you've signed and submitted your FAFSA you can reach out to the college or university that you're planning to attend or that you're currently attending they can help you with any questions or concerns that you have and thank you for joining us for our 2019 2020 FAFSA walkthrough

It is better to use a computer to sign the document to make sure that you will have the right to use the computer if you need to change the signer or the computer. You also need to have your computer's administrative privileges to use it. This is a PDF that is ready to go but it is not necessarily the finished product. How do I open the file? The default way to open a template is to use a .txt file browser. If this is not your thing, you can either download any of the available PDF viewers that have support for PDF document formats that we support. Or if you need to open the files in Adobe Reader, the free version of Adobe Reader can handle .rtf files. For Adobe Acrobat, you can get it at I recommend Acrobat Pro, as this will allow you to save the templates to your local disk without the need for an internet connection. How do I sign my copy? When you sign the document, you make a promise: that this is what you want to have printed out and that you will keep your word. You also confirm that you understand the terms of the End User License Agreement that the template author has provided. If you agree with the agreements terms then simply click the "SIGNING" link on the right of the page, and you are good to go. Otherwise go to the "SECTION 7" page and click the "Sign My User Agreement" link. A new agreement...
