Has dolphin communication been decoded at least partially?
Dolphins language is open and hierarchically organised like ours.We only have deciphered the meaning of signature whistles. Dolphins use signature whistles in a way quite similar to our names to identify individual dolphins or groups of dolphins. Those are the only dolphins “words” that its meaning was deciphered and the simpler signals that dolphins produce. In 1990 Alexander V. ZaninVladimir I. MarkovIrina E. Sidorova published a paper called “The Ability of Bottlenose Dolphins, Tursiops Truncatus, to Report Arbitrary Information” They have done experiments that demonstrated dolphins have ...

What amazed you today?
My son amazed me today…and not for the better.I received a phone call from the school today asking me to pick up my son. When I arrived, I had a very unpleasant discussion with the dean about how my son organized a “fascist uprising” at his school.Apparently, my son has a physics teacher who allows her students to eat lunch in her classroom while they complete any missing work they have to hand in.My son—being the busy and disorganized boy that he is—was in that classroom during lunch very often. One day, he and a couple of other hooligans were working on a class project together at lunch when they decided to take a break. What did they do during this break time? Well, what any normal teenagers would do…write a political manifesto. So they take one of those mini white boards lying around the classroom and begin writing their manifesto. Now for privacy reasons, let’s assume that my son and I live in an imaginary town called Terrytown (our town also has the word “town” at the end—just a different prefix). Now the way the school system works in our district is that the Terry School District begins with many different elementary schools, then these elementary school students blend into a few larger middle schools, and these larger middle schools blend into one giant high school.Terrytown High SchoolThe majority of the students at the school live in Terrytown, but there is one other location where students come from called Terry Plains. So my son and his idiot friends begin writing this manifesto which (according to my son) was meant to mock Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. You see, for those of you that don’t know, the word “Nazi” is an abbreviation for the NSDAP, which standed for “Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei” or the “National Socialist German Workers Party”.So to mock them, my son and his idiot friends begin writing their manifesto on the mini-whiteboard, titling it “The Townist Socialist Party of Terrytown”.Now you would think that a far-right activist would begin writing racist things about illegal immigrants, or Jews, or African-Americans or something like that…no…no…no.My son and his idiot friends write this manifesto as an emulation of Mein Kampf, except instead of having the antagonist be the Jews, they make the antagonists the kids from Terry Plains. They wrote about how Terrytown High School students lack the honor in their distinction, and that only kids who were born within Terrytown should be allowed to attend the high school…meaning the Terry Plains kids have to go.The manifesto began to go in-depth about more garbage regarding how they were going to get rid of the Terry Plains kids. First, they were gonna make all of them wear a patch on their shirt which said “Terry Plains”. Second, they were gonna confiscate their lockers and school issued computers. And lastly, they were gonna round them all up on the school buses and “deport” them to the former middle schools which they attended in Terry Plains.I was always a bit of an edgelord myself, so I suppose I could understand the joke. But my son and his idiot friends were dumb enough to write this manifesto and to not erase it!The physics teacher (who according to my son was an “SJW”) ended up finding the manifesto. Horrified, she immediately turned it over to the Dean of Students at Terrytown High School. The problem with my son is that similarly to me, he can let a joke carry him away. So he and his idiot friends actually began recruiting people to his non-existent political party. His school uses an online based server called Google Drive which allows students to share documents amongst themselves, and my son made a document which had the list of over 100 people who decided to join his political party as a joke. Now I can only imagine how awkward of a conversation it was for my son when he had to explain to his Dean of Students that he wasn’t actually a fascist, and that he didn’t actually intend to deport the Terry Plains kids because they were municipally inferior—or something like that?Am I proud of it? No.Am I amazed by it? Believe it.

What’s the rudest customer service experience you have ever had?
So we had been with a certain national bank for about 12 years. We had issues with them off and on, but it wasn't enough to make us want to go through the hassle of finding a new one. Then 2016 happened. It was a chaotic but exciting time for my family. We sold our house and upgraded just a few miles away. Naturally, we were excited but had a long list of things to update. Included on that list was the bank information. We walked into the local bank branch to change our address about a week before we moved. No harm; no foul. It was easy enough. Most of our banking is done online, so it wouldn't be shocking not to receive statements to our new address. I started to realize though that some letters to new address were just addressed to my husband and not myself. Odd, but it's not alarming yet.My debit card expired in December of that year, and around late October I received an email indicating that a new debit card had been mailed to me. Sweet!Only it didn't come. We waited. And waited. And waited. We would call, only to be told that it could take a few weeks. No new debit card for me. Meanwhile, my husband had already received his.Going online, we realized that they had the old address for me still listed. Once again, we trudged down to the post office to get it changed.Side note: Why wasn't mail being forwarded? Good question. Our city postal service struggled with that regardless of our efforts. Different story.Anyway, the next week it was - again - going to be sent to me. And again, no new debit card. It was sent to my old one. This went back and forth for weeks. For some reason, they would not update my address. Usually they would just cancel the debit card that had been sent to the wrong address, but in mid-December they actually canceled my working card, too. Oops. Finally we signNowed an agreement with a supervisor that a new card would be overnighted to one of the few branches open on Christmas Eve. It should be in their mailbox by 11 AM, which would leave us time to still head out of town for the holiday. We made our way down to the branch. It wasn't really close to us, but I really needed a working debit card. We went into the branch, which was located within a grocery store. Two people were working. One other person was in line. One teller was on the phone. When we signNowed to the counter, we explained our situation. We were hopeful that this would solve our issues. Unfortunately, it went south. Fast. The first teller flat out told us to get to the back of the line (by now there were a few other people) because she was busy with other customers. We looked around - she was busy with US. We are customers with a healthy bank account, so...how were we not CUSTOMERS?We asked for clarification. All we wanted was her to check the mailbox for an overnighted envelope with my debit card in it. Mind you, I had no working card. She started yelling, saying she couldn't leave her customers and to - again - get to the back of the line. We calmly explained that we were customers, too. At some point she would have to assist us. We just needed her to check her mailbox. Please. Please. Please.I was almost crying at that point. This entire situation has been a mess despite doing everything we could on our end. That set her off. By now, we had both tellers screaming at us to get out of their bank....all because we wanted her to check the mailbox. For my debit card. Which their bank continuously failed to send to the correct address.I wish I were kidding. If I could get the video footage of it, I would. We immediately placed a call to the bank's call center to at least get it noted what was going on. The supervisor, though at first defensive of the tellers, quickly admitted that they both acted inappropriately. We were even given a credit of like $50 for our trouble. (Weee!)He overnighted ANOTHER new card to my parent's address, which thankfully came on Dec. 26.He also FINALLY updated my address in their system. He had no idea why no one else had been able to update it.Flash forward to March. It was payday, and I had tried to buy a Groupon for something like bowling for the family. My card was declined -- interesting. It also happened at the same time that other people were tweeting that they weren’t able to use their debit cards either. There must be a national outage, right?Wrong. My boss frantically contacted me to ask if everything was okay - my paycheck had not gone through.Naturally, we called to find out that the bank had terminated our relationship. They claim that they sent us a letter in January, but we never received anything like it (though I don't know if I should blame them or our postal service for that one). Why did they terminate our relationship, you ask?Easy: we were in violation of "misconduct" with the tellers who apparently reported us as being belligerent. We may have raised our voices slightly, but it was THEY who yelled at US. I’m not exaggerating here. I’ve never had two grown women yell at customers like those two tellers. No one wants to work on Christmas Eve, but come one now! There was no appeal. It was a done deal - they didn't really care about our side of the story. It turned out in the end because we love our new bank, but dang - it was one of the worst experiences we had ever gone through with bad customer service that went on to actually hurt us beyond the incident.Funny enough, the bank still sends me emails asking me to open a new checking account.

Why are there so few republican lawmakers standing up against Trump?
The question makes the common assumption that the Republican Party is a conservative political party. Understandable, since Republicans always say they’re conservative, and many say they’re Conservatives, if you know what I mean. But it ain’t so, and their vote for Trump and subsequent strong ~90% approval of his “presidency” proves it. And also explains why Republican lawmakers have turned Congress into pretty much a rubber stamp for the executive branch under Trump. What happened? The GOP was utterly corrupted by two forces: the Dixiecrats and the plutocrats.During and after the Civil War the Republican Party was the Party of Lincoln, of civil rights, while the Democratic Party represented the men (remember, women couldn’t vote) who thought the single most important thing about them was that they were white men. This campaign poster from that era sums it up:This held true for about a century. But then in the 1960s the Democratic Party decided to live up to its name and its southern faction—the Dixiecrats—bolted en masse to the GOP, turning the Solid South from Solid Blue to Solid Red over the course of a few years. Why did they bolt, when most of them were white working stiffs and the GOP was the Party of Money? Because they were single issue voters, and for them the single issue was subjugating blacks—keeping them “in their place.”Summarized by the South’s signature poem: “If you’re White, you’re all right. If you’re Brown, stick around. If you’re Black, step back.”They fought the Civil War about enslaving blacks (and then lied about it ever since). They left the Democratic Party over subjugating blacks (and lied about it ever since). And some might say they finally won the Civil War on November 6, 2016, with a little help from their rich friends in America and Russia.About the same time as Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” absorbed the White South, the Angry Billionaire’s Club coalesced (my name for it). a loose coalition of affluent right wingers who conceived a long term project to capture the federal and state governments. ALEC, which controls the economic side of most Red state governments, is one aspect. The goal was to cripple government oversight of big business, slash taxes on the rich/big busiiness, guide foreign policy to favor big business, cripple the IRS’s ability to catch tax cheating by the rich/big business, and inculcate the worship of the rich among the right wing lumpen proletariat. (Hence the saying that socialism will never succeed in America because here the poor don’t believe they’re poor—just “temporarily embarrassede” millionaires.)The third prong of this right wing trident is the religious Right—mostly Christianists (that is, people who boast of their Christianity while opposing most of Christ’s teachings. Their alliance with the plutocrats works beautifully because what the Chrisitnists want—imposing their versionof Shariah Law— won’t cost the plutocrats anything, pretty much.Even the immigration issue. Big business loves ilegals because they use them to drive down wages for unskilled labor and bust unions. And you can misteat them and even cheat them of wages and they don’t dare complian. On the other hand right wingers are east ti fool by great public shows. So as long as the anti-immigration effort focuses on traumatizing mothers and children and doesn’t jail/fine employers, make e-Verify universal, or, worst of all, implement India’s Aadhaar biometric ID database—the only way we can uncover the 11 million already here—well, then, it’s all good.Racism, revanchism, xenophobia, homophobia, isolationism, unilateralism, disdain for science and government regulation have no place in the conservatism of Adam Smilth. So while the GOP serves the short-term profit-seeking interest of big business and the investor class, calling the party “conservative” has become less and less appropriate. “Reactionary” would be a far better fit. That would better explain the GOP’s relentless effort to destroy the ACA with no replacement, for example. So while conservative lawmakers might stand up to trump, authoritarian white supremacist reactionary lawmakers are unlikely to. At this point the GOP can’t win the presidency without cheating, and without the presidency it can block Democratic appointments and legislation but can’t stuff the court with marginally qualified right wing judges-for-life and systematically destroy the federal government’s regulatory, scientific, administraive and statecraft expertise. So any remaining conservative lawmakers know that it’s now either the Trumpublican or Democratic Party, or getting out of the game. If they oppose Trump their career as a “Republican” is over, and the Democratic Party is fiscally and socially more like what Eisenhower’s GOP was than what the GOP is now, but by current standards it’s only conservative by the lights of other rich nations—not America. Can they outlast Trump? Will his movement self-destruct? Maybe, maybe not.Easy to see why there’s so little resistance from elected Republican politicians who haven’t retired or announced their retirement. And if they did speak out, who’s going to listen to them? Remember that 90% Trump approval rating among Republican voters . GOP dissident pols would get the 10% of Republican non-Trump worshippers. With zero leverage. They might have a shot at a place in the Democratic Party, but it’s not an easy fit. One House member has resigned from the GOP to become an independent. Perhaps he has a strong hold on his district and can resist both parties’ desire to dislodge him, but he’ll never be a Senator or President and probably never get committee assignments he wants—or chairmanships. Not to mention the plum industry jobs awaiting congressmen who make big business happy. Those not blinded by ideology may still have their hands stayed by personal/practical considerations, in other words. It’s not surprising so few have spoken out. Just read the Trumpublican answers here to see what a clear-eyed Republican politician is up against—and even more an ethical one, if any are left.

When will email be dead, and what will replace it?
Email is absolutely awesome. I LOVE email. We constantly hear people complaining that email is terrible. People keep saying that we need to invent something new.Email is the best means of communication that ever existed. And while email can be massively improved, it will remain the best communication means for many, many years.Asynchronous communication is really, really importantEmail is beautiful because it is asynchronous. When you get an email, it is not assumed you will respond that second. You can take a day, think about the message, and respond thoughtfully. Sometimes it is just used to convey information and you do not need to respond at all.Synchronous written communication (like SMS, chat, etc.) have their place and can be really important when real-time is a priority … but most things do not need to be real time.Email is openAnyone using any system can email anyone else. You use Google Apps and I use Microsoft Exchange? We can still communicate. The soldier using Military email can communicate with her grandmother using AOL.You can take your history with you. You can forward your messages to a new system. Don’t like using Gmail? No problem, you can forward your old gmail address email to the new one you like.Messages go through a common protocol. Most of the “new” cool systems are closed. They are not portable. They lock you in. They don’t actually have your best interest at heart.Email has a long history that you can searchThe older you are, the more useful this is. You can figure out when you met that cool person twelve years ago. You can read old communications. You can easily search. And, because it is open, you can take your history with you (though admittedly this is more difficult than it needs to be). Many “new” modes of communication are just emailSMS: synchronous email with threads. (Gmail is asynchronous email with threads)Facebook messaging: email with nice graphics.Slack: email that only works for internal communication.WeChat: synchronous email for people that live in China. Is email perfect? Of course notEmail still could be much better. Even gmail can sometimes be really, really slow. Searches can be awkward. Many great advances and email apps just slow things down or cause bugs. And, of course, the company-wide reply-all is a crazy time suck for everyone. And many people send too many emails. And many people write emails that are WAY too long. And sometimes people write emails when a quick phone or in-person meeting would be better.Email can also break down with big groups trying collaborate together.Email also needs to be much more secure.Like all good things, email can be abused.Email is alive, well, and flourishingYes, there are some high school students that don’t use email … but they use something that is just amore synchronous version of email. In fact, most ppl communicate most with either email or something that looks very much like email. Email makes the world go round. It is the easiest way to communicate with most people. It is the best way to invite someone to a function. It is the common communication language of our era. And like other common communication languages of our era (like the QWERTY keyboard and English), there are structural problems that we wish we could change. But I say, LONG LIVE EMAIL!
