What is the difference between a white speed limit sign and a yellow speed limit sign?
What is the difference between a white speed limit sign and a yellow speed limit sign?In the US, the white signs are absolute speed limit signs:Under the law, you may not exceed the posted speed limit on a white speed limit sign. The Yellow speed limit signs are advisory signs:They usually warn of a lower speed than the general road speed limit for a road feature coming up, like a sharp curve in the roadway. It is advisory to a point. The state is pointing out that there is a roadway feature ahead that is potentially dangerous at higher speed and they are advising you that a lower speed limit than the roadway speed limit is smart. You can get a ticket for going faster than the yellow advisory speed limit if the officer thinks that conditions warrant the lower speed limit or that your driving performance indicates that you cannot handle the conditions at a higher speed - weaving, not able to stay within your lane, skidding, etc.

What do conservatives think of the National Review editor Jonah Goldberg's harsh criticism of the "irresponsible Right" and the
Well as a Liberal who was A2A, this was a nice and candid article.Wither it be liberal, moderate, libertarian or conservative, one thing that many on the political spectrum must do more often is reflect on whom on the political spectrum they align with and how they get along with them. And how their interactions with them speak about whom the are as people. Whom you do align and hang out with does speak for itself after all.People and their politics change over time, and with them the labels they describe to themselves change with it. One has seen this over time with Conservatism. Many here on Quora who describe themselves as conservatives are considered by many others to be liberals, even to many liberals themselves; such is the extent of the conservative center shift to the right. Many on the same side are so different in many aspects as to seem completely alien to one another. The values and opinions espoused have also changed, some remain consistent but others have changed and even become increasingly contradictory. And in an age of increasing partisanship, the desire to achieve power does mean that many conservatives derive their power from people they would likewise not want to associate with and even call conservatives. And with that decision comes consequences. We can see with Goldberg op-ed his despair of the mainstream Conservative’s inability to purge the alt-right and radicals from their ranks. And the despair that society as a whole has failed to wrestle with their emergence now that the internet has allowed them to spread their message far and wide, without society having any idea of what and how they should be dealt with. And distraught by what it has unleashed and what is now considered Conservative to many as typified by Trump. It should not surprise many that JG and many at NR do not consider Trump to be a conservative, they may speak in support or defense for one policy or another; or criticize and condemn others. But the NeverTrumper’s will never get behind him and support him but in this day and age, their opinion does not carry the weight it used to.Central authority figures and institutions are no longer the dominant forces and gate-keepers of before. Now they are only but one voice in an increasingly partisan room of speakers. In an increasingly fast paced and cut throat age of media, technological and social development.

Former FBI Director Comey admitted leaking information that disparaged Trump during Senate testimony on 6/8/2017; does this dest
This question betrays a fundamental misunderstanding about leaks, which I’m happy to clarify. There are two types of improper leaks:A person with a security clearance leaking classified information to people who aren’t cleared to have it.A government employee leaking unclassified information that is not supposed to be made public. The first is a crime; the second is not. But, neither is relevant since Comey didn’t do either. He didn’t leak classified information and he didn’t work for the government at the time he shared unclassified information. The Trump administration and their acolytes seem...

What should I do to get a Masonic ring, and become a 33° Freemason?
Put on the brakes. You're thinking about this completely out of order. To get a Masonic ring you can google "masonic ring" and find several place to buy one from. You can get a cheap one from China for under $10.Having purchased said ring (and placing it on your finger) does NOT make you a Mason and even if you buy a 33rd degree ring (which tend to cost more than $10, but you can still find some cheap ones) won't get you into a Masonic Lodge.First you must become a Freemason. There are a few steps:1) Form a favorable opinion about the Masonic fraternity. -- This opinion should be based on f...

Now that Theresa May has cancelled her Brexit vote for Tuesday 11th, & the EU will not negotiate another deal, what options does
Before you listen to me or anyone else in this thread, please read the excellent Robert Craig: What Happens Constitutionally If the Draft Withdrawal Agreement Is Voted Down? Then you may appreciate the full magnitude of the potential constitutional disasters facing us. Most of Robert’s sparklingly unpalatable analyses can be recycled under various of the current scenarios people are spouting.Don’t write TM off.Like most lawyers and others who believe in the rule of law, I’ve always personally detested pretty much every one of TM’s policies since she became Home Secretary. Unlike most lawyers, I’ve always personally admired her as a politician, as well as the first Home Secretary since my arrival 30-odd years ago successfully to resist being taken hostage by vested interests (perhaps assisted by her notoriously law-abiding past).TM is not only the only damn man in the Cabinet: she’s also close to the only damn competent politician in the entire parliament. She’s also personally stronger than Maggie ever was, and certainly less pro EU than was Maggie if you look beyond the posturing. TM was always set up to fail and become the universal scapegoat for the poisoned-chalice Brexit no matter what happened, but at least she’s one of the very few in her miserable party and cabinet with the guts to fight the good fight, the toughest fight of any PM since Churchill (whom everyone in the parliament also hated, not entirely coincidentally). Apart from the disastrous albeit temporary post-referendum closure of the revolving door between the executive and the parliamentary expertise on which PMs always have relied (which admittedly pre-dated TM’s commission), I always will applaud her for not being just another self-serving sycophantic shirker. I hope that’s not her only legacy. That said, I have no idea how history will view her cancellation. As Churchill observed, that will depend upon who writes it. She’s pulled off so many behind-the-scenes blinders in the past (I presume Spain’s agreeing to the withdrawal deal was one of them) I actually expected her to fight and win today, but I guess on this one there’s a risk if she went down fighting against all the backstabbers the country’d suddenly be in a constitutional crisis. You think I’m joking? Re-read Robert Craig’s article (and see other contributers’ articles on the same constitutional law blog). Bear in mind those analyses essentially apply even if everyone suddenly were to start behaving honorably. It’s still the mid-game, but the schadenfreude already is amazing. This is exactly what we all thoroughly deserve, when we choose to confuse (UK) referenda with political decision-making rather than anti-constitutional internal party political games, and start thinking that French Revolution concepts such as the will of the people (or even, god forbid, democracy) is somehow superior to or even relevant to parliamentary sovereignty. In a nutshell: paralysis. Why paralysis? Ultimately I collectively blame parliamentarians and journalists for stupidly telling people for a century or so that we live in a “democracy”; then expecting them suddenly to ignore all the lies they’ve been fed; finally, becoming like rabbits in the headlights, not having the guts collectively to stand up and confess how the constitution works: parliamentary sovereignty. For my piece de resistance, I serve Colin Murray: Brexit and the “Constitutional Integrity” of the United Kingdom. As Mr Murray poignantly observes: “You do it to yourself… and that’s what really hurts.”Disclaimer: I’ve not met TM. I vote early and often, for just about every political party there is. I sometimes assist parliamentarians, on a strictly non-partisan and solicited basis. I’ve studied Brexit for almost five years as a “safely impossible” constitutional research hobby (since my understanding that a previous and exceptionally dim Prime Minister tried to invoke Article 50 “by accident”, without consulting the parliament or even the full cabinet and without any plan - I now wish he had, so that we could have sacked him immediately and worked out a proper plan ahead of time). I voted to remain. While I enjoy poking fun at both sides especially some of the parliamentarians and “the born-again Mr Gove” in particular, I no longer care if they just get on with it, partly so I can enjoy the schadenfreude-laden comedy of the intransigent eurosceptic boil being lanced and replaced by an equally incapacitating europhile boil plus the slow collapse of the UK as a Union, partly so I financially can profit by professionally exercising some of the Brexit exploits I’ve been wargaming. So I’m all right, Jack - but though I’m fearful of our absurdly unnecessary return to the Henry VIII constitution as embedded in the 2018 withdrawal Act (if the making-future-law-by-decree-bypassing-parliament components are not repealed - hint), the foreseeable and foreseen consequences are not my fault but the parliament’s.

Do mainland Chinese consider Chinese Singaporeans to be culturally Chinese?
Firstly, the important fact you should know that Chinese can be nationalism sometimes to balance our “century of humiliation”. So we feel very proud if our people and culture rooted overseas. We see every Chinese-looking face in a subtle warming feeling like they are our brothers and sisters who were lost long ago. So when we learn that this feeling is not always mutual, we can get hurt. That is the very reason why Chinese nationalists are very harsh to pro-independence Taiwanese and Hongkongers.I was told Singaporeans are 中国人 Chinese when I was a little boy. When I was old enough to surf o...

Why are so many conservatives upset about black athletes kneeling during the national anthem?
I’m not an American, and I’m a pretty watery conservative. Take it for what it’s worth. Though maybe this allows me some distance from the issue. What are some possible reasons conservatives are angry about kneeling athletes during the anthem?Such conservatives are racists (terrible reason)Such conservatives disagree with the position, feeling that people should not be allowed to disrespect the anthem (bad reason)Such conservatives are amenable to the protest gesture, but feel the people doing it (super-rich athletes) are opportunistic hypocrites in decrying a system which has rewarded them so well (fair reason)Such conservatives have a benign view of the protest gesture, but dislike having another enjoyable activity politicized, and resent seeing a fun sports experience laden with players’ personal agendas (good reason)I suppose I show my hand. I don’t have strong feelings either way on Kaepernick’s actual stance. But it is irritating to me that there are fewer and fewer activities possible in the west that aren’t politicized and agenda-driven. I imagine this voice: You can’t eat an effing bowl of cereal anymore without showing your tribal affiliations, and you can’t watch the freaking Oscars or Emmys without hearing about everyone’s goddamned two-bit cause. Can’t the football players just play the damn game? I agree. Be involved in your values as a celebrity off-field. But when you’re on the field in front of a captive audience, stop making it about yourself and play the damn game. Before anyone calls me elitist, that applies to me too. The classroom is a place for me to teach, not push causes. As Stanley Fish says, save the world on your own time.
