What are some tips for driving a long distance? I will be driving over 4,500 km from Vancouver to Toronto.
I am going to assume that you want to do the trip quickly as opposed to a pleasure trip where you are willing to take in some attractions along the way.Preparation: make sure your vehicle is serviced, and that your tires are in good shape (proper winter tires in season). Plan you route, but allow flexibility. Obtain maps covering your intended route, or a recent road atlas, even if you will be using a GPS. Prepare some entertainment—you will be out of the range of decent radio reception in some stretches, depending on your route. I load a couple of MP3 players with some playlists, and podcasts.In general, the Trans-Canada Highway provides a straight forward route. However if going to Toronto (as opposed to say Ottawa), you should consider going through USA for part of the way. I like to drop down across the border from Winnipeg, head to Duluth, and continue through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, crossing back into Ontario at Port Huron/Sarnia.If you do take the all-Canadian route, I would strongly suggest taking the northern route through Cochrane. It is slightly longer, but almost always faster. The road is flatter, most of the traffic is trucks, and they tend to drive consistently at about 100 km/h. The route along the north shore of Superior has far more car traffic, and you are likely to encounter some cars driving at the (legal speed limit) of 90, with a string of traffic accumulating behind them.If you want to make good time, and yet not wear yourself out, limit your driving to 10, or at most 12 hours per day, including stops. Make reasonably frequent stops, but keep them short. I tend to eat lightly at lunch, buying something where there is counter service rather than sit-down service. If you can, get on the road by 6:00 without eating, and stop for breakfast after an hour or so. You will be able to cover a good distance before car traffic becomes heavier. Quit at around 6 in the evening, have a good meal, relax, and plan where you think you will get to the following evening, and select a few motels closer and farther from this destination. I tend not to make a hotel reservation until around 4pm, so I will have a better idea where I wish to stop, and make a reservation then. Some people prefer to make their reservations in the evening for the next day, in the comfort of their motel room. Some hotels allow you to cancel your reservation before 4pm but others require a day’s notice, particularly those that offer better rates for advanced booking.

As a seasoned corporate recruiter and principal of Career Insights, a job search consulting firm, following is my telephone/video interview preparation list: - Keep phone line (or Internet video program) open at least 15 mins. before scheduled time. - Switch off call-waiting feature so you won't be interrupted. - Turn off tv, stereo, cell phone and other intrusive noises. - Use a corded land line versus cordless (or mobile phone) if possible. DO NOT place the interviewer on speakerphone. - For Skype or other live video interviews, ensure that your image (including background) that will be projected is optimal. Your attire, groom, and presentation (i.e. posture and maintaining eye contact) shouldn’t be any different than a face-to-face interview. - Have a copy of the resume you submitted in front of you and study the job posting/description beforehand. - Don't be surprised if the interviewer has allotted limited time (10-15 mins.) for screening. (see below) - Conduct extensive research on the company beforehand (products, customers, competitors, corp. profile, press releases, etc.). Perform due diligence on the interviewer via online social media sites (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) but keep this information to yourself. - Don't ask about vacation, holidays or benefits yet. Another 'no-no' is inquiring about the firm's internal transfer policy. - If you’re asked about salary history or requirements, respond by stating that you’d be happy to go over your compensation in your current (or most recent) position, but emphasize that you’re flexible and more interested in finding the right position. - Hopefully, you're speaking directly with the hiring manager. If it's HR or a screener, don't let on that you're disappointed. They're still the gatekeeper that you need to dazzle. - Ask the interviewer what they believe is the most important qualification and attribute(s) to perform the job. Let them know that you researched the company and share a bit about what you learned. - If there's time, ask about the technology or system they’re using if it's relevant to the position. And it wouldn't hurt to ask about the company or department culture if the discussion is going well. - Convince him (her) that you're a team player; that you're not only looking for the right position, but for the right company. This will reassure them that you're not going to bail if another job comes along or when the economy picks up. - If the interview is running over the scheduled time allotted, it's a positive sign, but don't make it difficult for the interviewer to end the call. - If there's not a fit, don't fret. Stay positive and professional. If appropriate, ask about other opportunities in the company. - End by expressing gratitude for their time and complement them for being a great representative of the company. Without sounding desperate, make sure you verbalize that you're interested in the position and hope to meet the interviewer in person. It’s appropriate to ask what the next steps are and their timeframe for filling the position.

That has saved me the hassle of carrying a token everywhere I go. This is the article that I wrote for incoming batch of MBA students for Class of 2017-19 hope some of you who plan to pursue MBA in coming future find it useful.On one hand The MBA journey for most of you will begin this year and on the other for me it's ending. So I think it’s the right time to share some of my learnings from these 2 years of MBA with you since most of you must be having questions regarding the interview’s, College selection, MBA life and most importantly placements. I have tried to keep this post concise but as you know summing up two years of MBA in two-page word doc is a mammoth task so this post might be long read for some.Let me give you a brief introduction of my pre MBA profileBtech Electronics & Communication (2008-12) | Software Engineering Analyst Accenture-26 Months | 10th-77% 12th-79% | Btech-71.74% | CAT14-95 Percentile |The percentile range of 94-97 is like having it all yet not having it since all the time you feel the pain of solving 4-5 more questions and landing up in the 98+ range. The same Trauma I also went through post CAT results in 2014.The options that I had in hand were IMI, XIMB, MDI, IMT & IIM Ranchi HR program.I started with my interview preparations the most useful resources were threads on Pagal Guy, Amiya Sir’s Facebook group and Mrunal’s Blog. Though MBA helped me in developing reading as my hobby but back then I was not much into books so I watched summaries of some famous books such as Animal Farm and Mein Kampf in order to quote them during group discussions to gain some brownie points. For GD according to me more than practice it’s about how well read you are that matters. Read as much as you can from news to views just read it all trust me it will never go waste.The best part about interview’s is the very first question itself i.e. tell me something about yourself it is here where you can swing the whole interview in your direction. In the end its about your story and how much impactful it is. For weaving a perfect story always end first question with a statement that creates same level anxiety for the interviewer as it’s there for GOT episodes.Each interview was a unique experience in itself MDI interview revolved around ecommerce, IMT was all about Cricket, IMI revolved around Narendra Modi, XIMB was about Raghu Ram Rajan and in the end IIM Ranchi was about Why HR.Finally, the results were out I made it through IMT, IMI, XIMB was waitlisted at MDI and was rejected by IIM Ranchi. After series of discussions and consultations I decided to opt for IMT Ghaziabad though batch size was one big factor but then the legacy of college and reviews of my friends studying there lead me to join it finally.First few months went off in a flash with morning’s dedicated to classes and evening’s to MarkUp the official marketing committee of IMT Ghaziabad where I got through after 5 rounds of rigorous interview and the workload from both Classroom and Committee was too much with stringent deadlines this taught me when it’s asked you have to deliver no running away from that.The most fascinating part of MBA colleges are Case study competitions where you get an opportunity to solve a real life problem and you get paid for the same. I won two such competition’s one organized by SAB miller and other by Social Responsibility club of IMT before my internship interviews.As being GEM and from IT field I got a reality check during summer internship when I had no shortlist for first 2 days but I had faith in myself and was looking for that one opportunity which ultimately came my way on day three in form of Videocon and I cracked it to secure internship in Marketing domain which was my aim as I was reluctant to join back IT services companies for internship after coming from same background. This also taught me one important lesson of MBA if you want something be ready to have loads and loads of patience for it.The next few months of first year were spent in making my CV stronger by winning competitions organized by IIMA, Lava Mobiles, Cashkaro.I also did short term projects for Oyo Rooms and Goibibo and made board room presentations to them along with my friends. In the meantime, the elections for Markup happened and I transitioned from a member to Coordinator for the Committee.The internship stint at Videocon taught me about the intricacies of Sales and Marketing and how each one of them is so different from other yet so closely related. The year two at IMT began with recruiting junior member’s for Markup that showed me a glimpse of how people management is at core of everything and if you can get right people the work becomes so much simpler.The second year of MBA starts off in a flash there is July where you get feel of becoming senior then august when you start looking at your books for exams and September when panic button gets pressed and finally October-November& December when the war can be declared anytime i.e. placement week happens.During my second year also the craze for Case competitions never faded and I won Campus rounds for Mahindra War Room, Aditya Birla Retail,FCB Ulka, TATA Steel and made it to Nationals of Infosys Case Competition. The best part of all these competition was that they taught me about different sectors and different challenges in those sectors which was above any bookish knowledge that I could have learned from.The Sign-ups started rolling for the final placements with big names coming each day and I started registering for them. Somewhere deep inside me I was fearful regarding shortlists but then the effort that I had put in be it academically (I neither excelled nor did bad just maintained decent CGPA of 6.9) or in extracurricular gave me faith that I can make it through in one go this time around.It was evening of 17th Nov when I got a mail in my Inbox from placement office informing me that I have been shortlisted for Google. First it gave me goosebumps because this was the biggest job in campus with package not only matching my age but a Brand that is everyone’s dream to get associated with. The placement process started early morning on 18th Nov around 7:30am. We were told that it was a profile based shortlisting and they have gone through each and every CV and finally came down to list of candidates they are going to interview.It was a rigorous process with my third interview ending around 8:30pm in evening. Later that night I got to know that I have made it through Google and need to send them acceptance mail. The high school marks, being an engineer or coming from IT background none of it mattered the only thing that mattered in that interview room was me and my MBA life so to conclude just want to say MBA is all about exploring yourself if you give it all then you will definitely have it all.
