An employee I terminated has left me a sealed envelope titled "now I can tell you what I really think." Should I just shred it w
Whether you have a Human Resources Department or not, your former employee left a potential bombshell with you.If you don't have a Human Resources (HR) department, call your corporate attorney, before opening the letter.Ask them what is the very best action to take.A Challenging Employee Who Walked On The Dark SideBack in 2008, I had a very challenging employee who was consistently tardy. He was perpetually argumentative and had a constant negative attitude about everything. The employee was repeatedly caught by other employees taking very extended lunch hours. He was also frequently discovered sneaking out of work several hours before his work day was over. After he was formally threatened with termination, in writing, he quit without notice. He walked off the job in a fit of anger after another employee asked for his help on a work project.A Series Of Dirty TricksAfter he walked off the job, he unleashed a rash of dirty tricks. His tricks included sending a sealed letter filled with a laundry list of legal and physical threats. He also retained his own attorney to file a wrongful termination suit.Although he stormed off the job, quitting in a rage, he didn't care to uphold the truth of the situation. The employee filed for unemployment compensation, even though he quit, rather than being terminated. In his application for unemployment compensation, he blatantly lied, about the fact he walked off the job.Since he abandoned his job, he was no longer eligible, for compensation. Our corporate attorney helped us fight his invalid compensations claims.Months Of Paperwork, Phone Calls And AppealsIt took months of completing stacks of paperwork and making several phone calls to the state. We continued to provide mountains of documentation to prove the employee quit and wasn't terminated. With each appeal we received from his attorney, we filed our own in response. He continued to fight. Eventually his appeals for compensation were formally denied by the state.A Frivolous LawsuitWhen he was unsuccessful in his attempts to received unemployment compensation, he filed a frivolous lawsuit, claiming partial ownership of the company. The employee had zero proof of ownership, which he’d never received.Through our attorney, we proven the company had always been privately held. His claims of ownership were totally dismissed. He also claimed he was harassed, but he was unable to provide any proof of his accusations. None, zero, zip.Anyone Can Sue For Any ReasonSadly, people can sue for any reason they want to. They can also say anything they want, putting the burden of proof on the people being sued.Meanwhile, we discovered he was running a side business, while being employed full time at our company. This news explained his constant disappearances from work throughout the day.The situation with the ex-employee turned into a long and messy legal situation lasting for more than a year.Retaining An Attorney Saved UsThe only thing which saved us, was our decision to contact our attorney, from the very beginning of the problem. The ex-employee eventually dropped his lawsuit, didn’t receive unemployment compensation and finally stopped threatening us.Our attorney did a fabulous job of protecting us every step of the way.Unfortunately, we still had to pay the legal bills, but they were worth every penny.I shudder to think what might have happened if we hadn't contacted our attorney the minute the employee walked off the job.Always be careful with any similar letter you might receive from any employee, whether they’re leaving their job or not.In today's world anything can and does happen in business.

Are you affected by Cognizant’s layoffs?
Not currently as i have already left the company and have no plans to join the same in anywhere future. While i was working in Cognizant i was released from the project and had come on bench. My ratings were good and i had also received awards from Cognizant before but i wanted to explore more opportunities to learn and therefore i insisted on getting released. On my first day of bench period i went to meet required gwfm team and what they said just hurt me very badly. They told that you have 8 weeks time to get into project or else you will have to resign. They told that you need to search for projects or else you will have to resign.I told them that i need to go to home currently as my family member is hospitalised and again they told me that whatever leaves you will take it will be deducted from 8 weeks time and you will have very less time to get into project.I was taken aback as this was the first time in was on bench and i had no plans to sit around.I requested them but the same response was given.I have never seen any company treat their employees in such manner as there were many times when i stayed till midnight, came on weekends to complete the tasks.By the way i some how got a project and that project was support one. These people told that there are some enhancement and defects fixing are there in project but it was complete L1 and L2 work.As an engineer i never expected to do such kind of work but i accepted the project as i didn't want to resign. After i joined the project i got job in another MNC with better package and purely development work.I resigned. Now as i resigned they are asking me to stay and they are willing to offer me development projects. Now let me tell you if didn't accept their offer as if a company which cannot support you during your bad times is not at all worth to work for.

How was your XLRI 2019 interview experience?
XLRI BM Interview 2019 was my favorite interview experience because of the level of sarcasm of the professors!!!ProfileGeneral, Humanities (Psychology Hons), FresherWAT and GD TopicAbortion should be banned. Even a mother has no right to kill her child.Interview SummaryPanel comprised of three senior male professors.Interview started with a discussion on my research paper, the methodology used, it's robustness and limitations. Then it moved to a detailed discussion based on what I spoke in the GD. (All the interviewees before me were also questioned mostly on the their stances in GD)The professors tried putting you into scenarios where your propositions from the GD stood contradicted or invalid. Questions with no clear answers were deliberately thrown to test your critical reasoning skills. Following are some excerpts:In the GD, I had said that legalizing abortion can help regulate the underground practices of unsafe abortion mostly carried out after sex determination by quacks or untrained professionals. The professor remarked, “Following your line of reasoning, we should legalize Marijuana and drugs too. What's your view on that?”Since I had spoken in the favor of legalizing abortion, I was asked to recommend a cut off date for allowing that. The professor cleverly used the word ‘kill the child’ instead of saying “abort the fetus” to make your opinions sound grave. He would say things like “So till what time is it okay to kill the child? Three months of pregnancy, just one day before pregnancy? On the day of delivery?”And the professors were smart enough to sense any sort of beating around the bush. They cut me to pieces when I tried to ease my way out out of a difficult ethical dilemma by using heavy words. As soon as I mentioned, “an enabling social infrastructure”, the professor retorted by saying, “No big fat words please, you've already done that in GD”. They wanted crisp and clear answers and extracted the same out of you, by hook or by crook. Any diplomacy you tried to take shelter in was burnt to shreds.I loved how they openly shared a sarcastic laugh at one of my propositions to set up a committee which could deal with individual cases of abortion determining the intent of abortion, the medical implications if any and then approve the decision based on the validity of the case. They grilled me for good 10 minutes on this idea. They asked me to chart a blueprint of the committee. They legit asked me to write down in words who all will comprise the committee. Since I wrote parents as members too, they asked what about the grandparents wishes? Why don't they have a say?As the members I mentioned were four in number. They asked me what would happen if there is a tie of votes? Two people want it, two don't? Who will have a greater say? Why?Since I had mentioned that a medical professional be a part too, they asked me to specify what professional? A gynecologist? A physician? What qualifications? When I added that a gynecologist trained in clinical/counseling psychology would be a good fit. One of them remarked, “Great, she's creating jobs for herself!” :PAt some point they had asked me to enlist the stakeholders of this entire exercise of abortion legalization. I mentioned that it involves the parents, the legal jurisdiction, the medical team supervising the pregnancy and in broader sense the greater socio-cultural fabric of the country too.One of the professors remarked, “Wow who's left?”The most quiet professor of the lot, promptly quipped, “Americans? What about Americans?” (Bow before the God of Sarcasm)And another professor pointed out the great mistake I had committed, he said you've included everybody but the unborn child. Isn't he/she a stakeholder? It was a moment of epiphany for me. I did not shy away from admitting my error. I apologized for it. And he says, “Yes, now that's a good answer!”There were lots of other dicey scenarios put forth to push one's reasoning and defending abilities to the limits. It was a wonderful experience to say the least. Regardless of how they might have perceived/evaluated my performance, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and laughed at their quirky remarks long afterwards too! :DVerdict: Awaiting!Update (10/04/19) - Straight convert for both BM and HR! :D

Is my resume good enough to get an interview with a top-tier tech company like Google, Quora, or Amazon as a data scientist?
Most data companies are usually looking for T-shaped data scientists - people with a general breadth of skills (programming, familiarity with tools, business acumen, etc.) with depth/specialty of a particular field (NLP, graph processing, stream analytics, recommenders, etc.).Now, the problem with your resume is that it looks like a collection of keywords. You need to go into greater details on your projects and their outputs/impacts. It is not sufficient to say 'I use X tool' - say 'I use X tool to achieve Y objective/KPI'. You need to quantify your message, after all, you are a data scientist, right? Tell the reader, did you made things 2x faster, 3x more accurate by using a particular model? What are the tradeoffs and design considerations for using the specific methodology or tool? You can refer to my answers below for resources to build a solid foundation in statistics, machine learning & tools. How do I become a data scientist without a PhD?Why is Python so popular in machine learning?Next, decide on one depth/specialty that you love and go deep into it. What is the most inappropriate experience you have had with an office colleague?
Near the peak of the dot-com bubble, I was recruited in a rather agressive manner by a startup I wasn’t 100% excited about. I didn’t know why I was so reluctant to accept the offer: for a startup, it was remarkably well-funded; the business model was viable; and the compensation package was more than attractive.Somewhere in the middle of my recruitment, a colleague from a previous gig whom I respected tremendously (and still do) joined the startup in a role that was similar in seniority to what they were offering me. He’s a senior and serious dude, and not the type to put his reputation on the line or join a startup for a payout… so I accepted the job and started making calls to people I wanted to hire for my team.A couple of weeks in, the founder of the startup (who I’d met a few times during my recruitment) called about a dozen of us to a weekend senior-staff offsite meeting at a resort midway between SF and LA — as I said, this thing was almost too well funded: I think I flew first class for the 45-minute flight. When we all were settled in at the hotel, it was at a group dinner with my colleagues that I noticed something: all of us were men. Not an unheard-of thing in Silicon Valley (then or now), but this became relevant when the founder/CEO made a brief speech toward the end of our dinner. After going around the table introducing us all (name, title, etc.) the CEO said, “You may have noticed we don’t have anyone in a senior position here from Human Resources. That’s because we’re not going to have anyone senior or junior doing that — [startup name] isn’t going to have HR. Period.”Most startups don’t have a traditional HR — the focus is on recruitment usually, so this wasn’t a thing on its own. We had more than 50 employees on Day One (which is enough to warrant some sort of personnel team), but since my experience with HR tends to be more adversarial than not I didn’t really care. Yet.Then the CEO continued: “We aren’t going to have HR here — ever. When you all fill out your orgs, I’ll approve the comp packages. But your hires will have to sign a contract we put together that basically prevents anyone from suing the company for harassment or any of that hostile workplace bulls**t. I don’t like walking on eggshells and I bet none of you do either… our culture is going to be what it is: rough and tumble. Anyone who doesn’t like it isn’t right for my company.”He went on in greater detail, explaining how a previous startup he helmed had been “castrated” by HR and legal staff. This shocked me (an understatement on many levels): not only did it seem reckless and fraught with risk, but I couldn’t imagine how it was legal.[This was before I was aware of companies like Vice that required employees to sign similar waivers/contracts that claimed the nature of the organization “required” a degree of what would be considered hostile, sexually inappropriate and actionable at any other employer.]Legal or not, this didn’t make it ethical. And my preliminary list of people I wanted to hire included several women I’d worked with before — I wasn’t going to recruit them into a startup where “hostile workplace” was essentially part of the mission statement. And I wasn’t going to pour my life into a ‘bro culture’ where the CEO and founder considered himself ‘Head Bro’ first and foremost.I huddled with the colleague who I’d trusted enough to follow into this mess late into that night, and thankfully he was as uncomfortable as I was about what the CEO said. I was more distressed — or perhaps less strategic-minded — than my trusted colleague… which led me to raise my concerns and discomfort the following day during the formal senior staff session (with the CEO present) over the ‘Bro Doctrine’.I didn’t say anything unprofessional or that I felt was unreasonable. But the founder’s silence (along with the rest of the room) after I spoke made the remainder of the session veeerrrry tense.I got a one-line text from the CEO’s assistant telling me that I wouldn’t be needed at the Sunday sessions. Everyone other than my trusted colleague went out of their way not to cross paths with me (or make eye contact), and my company email went silent immediately. When I was driving in to work on the following Monday, the CEO called my cell and told me (while shouting obscenities and so forth) not to show my face in “his” office ever again. He fired me. Later that day, a confused guy in a pickup truck arrived at my house with 3–4 boxes of my belongings collected from my office.I didn’t bother to engage in a fight for a sep package or to retain any of my equity in the company — I was happy to be done with that mess. It was the first time I’d been fired and the shortest tenure I’d ever had with a company. A few months later, the startup collapsed… and it’s safe to say the startup’s shutdown didn’t bug me one bit.

Indian Men: What scares Indian men?
Today is the worst day of my life. I am going to write about the worst experience in my entire 24-year-old life span. I want to forget it as soon as possible. So today I went to meet my friend. I signNowed the spot early and started waiting for him.It wasn't long when I saw few policemen approaching me.One of the policemen asked me “What are you doing here ?”I said “Sir, I’m waiting for my friend”Policeman: “Which friend? Can you call him?”Me: “Yes of course sir.”Policeman: “Then call him and give it to me.”I tried to call him but unfortunately, it wasn’t connecting. Man! I was scared as hell.I tried three-four times and then he said.Policeman: “Stop making excuses. I know boys like you. You people come here and harass girls.”Me: “No sir, absolutely not. I’m a decent guy. I am a college student myself.”Policeman: “Don’t talk much, just sit in the jeep.”Me: “Sir believe me I’m innocent.”Suddenly he dragged me toward the police vehicle by holding my collar and forced me to sit there. There were three more boys in that jeep. They took us somewhere. When we signNowed we were taken to a big hall kind of room. There were many policemen and women there. There was a policewoman who seemed the most senior among them. She said “Don’t you people have shame. Don’t you think about your mother and sisters before harassing girls? It’s because of people like you women are unsafe in India” She was loud in her tone. She continued “But no worry. Now I have taken the charge and I will ensure girl’s safety in this city. To do that I will teach a good lesson to molesters like you so that you won’t be harassing any girl in the future.”When she was finished a few policemen came and directed us toward another hall. There, our mobiles, watches, wallets and other things were taken. Then they told us to remove our shirt or t-shirts anything we were wearing on upper body, that too in front of some policewomen.I was feeling very shy but I did it as I had no other option.“Chalo ab sab ke sab murga ban jao”(Now everyone, take cock position)We did as they said. Suddenly someone hit me on my hips with a broad stick. It was unbearable.“Saale ba**we”(Bas***ds!)We were kept like that for 30 minutes. In between, they were shouting on us and hitting us on our butt. They were telling us to keep our hips up and don’t sit comfortably. Then we were told to do 50 sit-ups, holding our ears and saying “Ab kabhi ladki nhi chedenge”(We will never tease girls from now on). While doing so, I noticed almost all of us were crying(including me). The policewomen standing there were having a good laugh on us and throwing cuss words regularly.God knows how many innocents were there. After all this, they let us go but with a strong warning.I came to my room straightaway and cried for several hours recalling the bad experience which I had. I haven’t eaten anything yet. Now I’m writing this with tears dropping from my eyes. This was one of the pages from the diary of Anirav. It’s been 2 years still, he hasn’t forgotten that incident. Every time when he remembers whatever happened with him that day, it scares the sh*t out of him.So what scares Indian Men? Fear of getting accused of something which they never did and penalized for the same, that too without :any evidence.any chance to defend themselves.any fair trial.any investigation.listening to their side of story. And with :the help of gender-biased laws.the help of misandry spreading among the society nowadays.the help of mentality that “men are always wrong”the lack of support provided to men by law, police, and society.the sudden increase in pseudo-feminism and false notion of equality. For those who don’t know, this is murga (Cock) position:Source:- Google Images

For people who hate safe spaces, what is it that you imagine that they are, and why do you hate them so much? Do you hate the id
Disclaimer: I AM NOT SPEAKING ABOUT THERAPIST OR COUNSELLING OFFICES. I am only speaking of general spaces designated as “safe spaces”.I find the implementation of safe spaces disgusting for one simple reason. Only people from whatever is the latest psychosocial craze are allowed to have them. Anyone they view as an opponent is not.Let's look at the primary proponents of “safe spaces”, 3rd wave feminists. From 6 Reasons Why We Need Safe SpacesRespecting one space – a space you’re not forced to enter – isn’t going to result in loss of your freedom of expression. From Safe SpacesIt is very important to have spaces for women to focus on their shared yet diverse experiences of being women. The purpose of our society is to provide self-defined women and those that sometimes experience life as a woman an alternative space that differs from the scores of male-dominated academic&artistic spaces at Cambridge.I say those goals sound reasonable, and dare I say, awesome. When I've had enough of someone barking at me about crap I don't want to be involved in or saying things that are upsetting to me, it's nice to know there are places I can go to get away from it all besides just my apartment. I can even find like-minded people who can help share my feelings and make me feel less alone.Go Safe Spaces! Keep being awesome! But wait. Safe spaces are supposed to be places where people can discuss topics of specific interest without fearing they’ll be attacked or silenced, right?Again, from 6 Reasons Why We Need Safe SpacesIn every single feminist safe space I’ve been, someone – usually someone who is more privileged than most people in the group – will call the space an “echo chamber” or, to use a more vulgar term, a “circlejerk.”An echo chamber is a space where people repeat and agree with certain ideas, patting one another on the back instead of contributing new thoughts. An echo chamber is thought to be useless because nobody is learning anything new or expanding their perspectives.andSafe spaces are places or communities – either online or off – where bigotry and oppressive views are not tolerated. They are controlled environments (insofar as they can be) in which people can discuss certain issues and support one another. Usually safe spaces will focus on specific issues, like sexism, racism, or transantagonism.andEssentially, safe spaces provide a network of support and understanding. They are an oasis for some groups who are otherwise denied safety and respect by the world.and1. Your Freedom of Expression Is Not at RiskI come from South Africa. Up until recently, freedom of expression was not a right our citizens had. I know that it’s an extremely important right, and I know why it is valuable. But consider this:Because most of the Internet is unmoderated, I have only a handful of places on the Internet where I know I can be my true self without being disrespected, silenced, or trolled. I need these spaces to remain safe for the sake of my emotional and psychological health. You have the entire Internet to use your freedom of expression. If you feel like you’re unsafe on the rest of the Internet, make your own safe spaces with your own rules, or lack thereof. Then why is it when men try to create safe spaces for themselves, this happens? From Controversial centre for men opens in Toronto amid criticismA controversial men’s rights centre opened in Toronto Monday amid criticism from feminists who say the organization is more concerned about attacking feminism than promoting the health of men.“I think they work really hard to discredit the feminist movement and to kind of take back a lot of the gains that women have made,” Anne Theriault, a feminist blogger in Toronto said in an interview Monday. What happened toRespecting one space – a space you’re not forced to enter – isn’t going to result in loss of your freedom of expression.Oh riiiight. Only women are allowed those. This men’s shelter was not asking to be set up in the local large mall, Eaton Centre, or the nearby public square, Yonge Dundas Square, or the popular public space, High Park. They were asking to set up inside a building, “a space you're not forced to enter”. They weren't looking to set up a Little Rascals-style “He Man Woman-haters Club” or a gender based KKK that doesn't hate on black people but instead hates on women. They just want to discuss the rates of male suicide, look at new techniques for managing and curing colon cancer, giving advice to single fathers trying to raise their children on their own, and homeless men who need help finding work so they can get back on their own two feet again.WHY IS THAT EVIL?Before this shelter centre, a private citizen tried to run something out of his own house. He never got enough funding and was ridiculed for his efforts. He ended up being forced to sell his home, and that coupled with the ridicule he was getting, made him commit suicide. What kind of outcry do you think would've happened if this story had been about a woman? Never a man, though. No, never a man.Owner of shelter for abused men and children commits suicide after financial ruin, ridiculeI don't believe in academic safe spaces and I hope to
these things don't become enshrined. However, a proper safe space, where people with issues and upsets can go to find comfort? I support that totally but only if all of us are allowed to have them, not only the popular kids. *eye roll* -
What are the best ways to prepare for a 2008-like collapse scenario, except it is bigger, and the government will not step in to
I wrote an entire book on this subject called “The Prosperity Clock” that came out in 2014.The signs to look for are a phase transition move higher in the US stock market, not dissimilar to what we saw in January of this year, accompanied by a rising Dollar. The most likely upcoming time period is 2020–2021 and then after that in the 2025–2028 period.During secondary crisis periods like the one we are in now that began with Trump’s election, generally, for thousands of years, the number one best strategy is to simply move away from the dominant power in the world at the time. And that includes its allies. But try and make sure that you have a support system wherever you go of friends and family.Second, if you can’t move away then try to become as independent of government services, and that includes municipal services, as well.Below is an excerpt from my book “The Prosperity Clock” which covers most of what you need to do to prepare for a worst case scenario during this stage:So what should you do to prepare for this coming financial crisis?1. Hedge your investments. There are numerous financial instruments available now that allow you to profit if financial markets decline. A good strategy now would be to buy into one or more of these, on an UNLEVERAGED basis and just hold on even if the stock market continues higher for a while longer. Think of it like you do auto, home or life insurance. Also make sure these instruments are issued by parties with strong balance sheets who will not likely default if the crisis becomes too bad.2. Double check ANY and ALL financial institutions that you currently have funds with for financial stability and only stay with the safest overall. This is good advice regardless of the environment but is likely to be even more so when the next crisis starts. But realize too that when the crisis signNowes full force that no financial institution, no matter how strong, will be unaffected.3. Be prepared for the world financial markets to potentially seize up. Don’t be surprised if we even see a period where exchanges are temporarily closed because of the likely severity of this coming financial crisis. So keep as little money as possible in any single financial institution unless they have a rock solid balance sheet and, even then, diversify as much as possible to as many solid institutions as you can. Also try to stay liquid too and keep money as close to home as possible.4. Learn to be a “trader”. The days of buying and holding are likely to now be over in financial markets, at least for a while (although this may be a different story in commodity markets over the next few years). If this is not something that you have the time or the inclination to do then find someone who is an expert in short term trading of financial markets and hire them. If they are experienced and good at their job they will be worth their weight in gold to you.5. Speaking of gold, and other commodities, the S5 inflation stage of the Jubilee Cycle also started in 2014; and this is when commodity inflation is most likely. Look for potential opportunities in physical commodity markets after the initial sell off from this crisis as we will likely see money moving into commodity markets after the initial shock and liquidation. This means that precious metals prices should rise substantially during this stage. But it also means that prices of other commodities in the energy and agricultural sectors should be soaring as well. DO NOT expect this commodity inflation to spill over into real estate though as real estate should now be viewed, save only for special situations where profit is virtually certain, as a way to diversify internationally for personal security rather than investment gain. But don’t get married to these commodity investments after they start to move. This S5 stage will end in 2021, and while it may still carry over a bit after that into the S6 stage (as it has done before and did in the inflation of the late 70′s), commodity prices will eventually come crashing back down as they always do. And this will likely come shortly after 2021 when we enter the S6 stage and the economic powers of the world come together to put an end to this inflation and precipitate another deep recession and deflation. It will likely be shortly after this event that we see the death of the sitting U.S. President, or an assassination attempt made on their life. And after that a new bull market will likely start in stock markets around the world if it has not already begun.6. Diversify internationally. Even consider moving to another location outside the U.S., at least temporarily. During previous Secondary Crisis stages of the Empire Cycle in the past this has been one of the best strategies of all.Look for locations that are outside of the dominant Empire’s influence, in this case the U.S., that are still relatively free, place high value on free trade and commerce, and are far enough away from the turmoil likely taking place in the Empire to keep you and yours safe. As of this writing, these locations are most likely to be found in South America, Asia, or most of the countries mentioned earlier that had good demographic potential. But don’t depend on any one location if you can afford it. Stay flexible and be prepared to move to a new location should circumstances turn bad.7. Diversify your cash holdings internationally as well and expect to eventually see currency controls and travel restrictions instituted in the U.S. (although this might not happen until after 2025 when the Warm-Dry phase of the Climate Cycle is due to kick in). We are likely going to see some major changes taking place in the world monetary system. As to what those will be I can only guess at this point. So the best strategy is to keep some of your cash in Dollars, Euros, Swiss Francs, Japanese Yen, Chinese Yuan, etc., etc. Try to do this with any physical cash you have as well. This will also be one of those cases where if you develop short term trading skills you can profit handsomely from currency market turmoil until if and when markets seize up. But if you don’t have those skills or want to develop them, as we said before, hire someone who does have them.Physical holdings of gold and silver coins are also a good idea but don’t be surprised if at some point during this Secondary Crisis stage laws are passed making it illegal to hold, or “hoard” as it will likely be called then, gold and silver. If the crisis becomes too bad such a law could even apply to “hoarding” in general and will be applied to any sort of supplies that are deemed important to the “general welfare”, thus turning anyone who persists in being a “prepper” into a criminal and enemy of the state. Expect similar “anti-gun” or “gun control” laws to be passed, probably after 2025, as well. Also, if you have sizeable sums of wealth you want to move abroad, look into gemstones as an easily transportable investment vehicle that are also likely to appreciate in value during the inflation expected during the current S5 stage. But approach this as more of a capital preservation investment. Cryptocurrencies would also fall into this category, just don’t get too overexposed.8. Develop your foreign language skills; particularly in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic and Russian. This will serve you well in case you do decide to expatriate or find yourself in some dangerous situation.9. Prepare for civil unrest, worsening climate conditions, and start becoming as self sufficient as you can. Keep a low profile and don’t show off as it will make you a target. Buy yourself some guns and ammunition and learn how to use them safely. I know that this recommendation will be hard to follow for some of you, particularly if you live in a country where gun ownership is illegal or looked at suspiciously, but history has shown us that in crisis situations when civil unrest breaks out and essential services break down, even temporarily, that those who are armed are those who survive. And, as we pointed our earlier, there is the strong possibility that after we cross 2025 and approach the 84 year Crisis period that the civil unrest in the U.S. could even threaten the very unity of the country just as it did during the Civil War. And this expected civil unrest will not likely be contained in the U.S. but will be a worldwide phenomenon in most places, particularly in the West. This is the kind of thing that happens during Secondary Crisis stages. But this recommendation goes far beyond just guns and ammo. Start trying to become independent of public services in general as they are likely to gradually become less and less reliable. Yes, keep at least a 6 month supply of food and water on hand but also start your own vegetable garden, even if you have very little space. Try to get off the public electric grid as much as you can with solar power. Start to store essential supplies and barter items. Become as independent and self sufficient as you can because when the next crisis hits we may even see breakdowns in essential services like water and electricity as well as periodic breakdowns in the transportation system that stocks our grocery stores.Just don’t be ostentatious about what you are doing. Don’t go around bragging about how well prepared you are or well armed. Because, as we mentioned earlier, there is a good chance that after 2025 anti-hoarding and anti-gun laws will be passed that, under many circumstances, could turn you into a criminal.10. Be very careful and circumspect with your political affiliations and involvement if you are a U.S. citizen. Based on what I am currently seeing, I suspect a situation is developing politically where the Tea Party movement is going to become stronger in the years to come.Virtually every Secondary Crisis period in history has involved the emergence of some new philosophical or political movement that was connected to dissatisfaction with the size of the central government and its power. We may well see a situation develop in the U.S. where the Tea Party becomes powerful enough to elect a President from its own members that is in the same mold, or worse, than Trump. In fact, expect that to happen. But that will likely also precipitate the existential crisis that is typical of Secondary Crisis periods as the old guard fights back to regain power. This could be the source of the crisis to come after 2025 and could even lead to some sort of military intervention (like a coup) that could either result in the ultimate disintegration of the United States or its emergence as an even stronger, but far different, power once this crisis period comes to an end.But after 2025 we could see a situation where those who were members of the ousted party, or who opposed the now current government, are now considered “enemies of the state”. And this seemingly outrageous action will likely be tolerated by the general populace because of the chaos, uncertainty and lawlessness dominating the country and these people will be blamed and used as scapegoats for the ongoing crisis. But many of these people will resist such laws and this will likely lead to more civil conflict in the U.S. until this Crisis period is due to come to an end in the mid 2050s.Then a new Silver Age stage of the Empire Cycle should begin and, if the U.S. has managed to hold itself together, it should emerge as an even stronger world power for the next 80 to 110 years. But even if the U.S. DOES disintegrate into a collection of individual states, as the former Soviet Union did, there will still likely be a great degree of cooperation between them and they will still collectively represent the largest and strongest military power in the world for the next century or so, particularly if the NATO military alliance is maintained.

What are some tips for driving a long distance? I will be driving over 4,500 km from Vancouver to Toronto.
I am going to assume that you want to do the trip quickly as opposed to a pleasure trip where you are willing to take in some attractions along the way.Preparation: make sure your vehicle is serviced, and that your tires are in good shape (proper winter tires in season). Plan you route, but allow flexibility. Obtain maps covering your intended route, or a recent road atlas, even if you will be using a GPS. Prepare some entertainment—you will be out of the range of decent radio reception in some stretches, depending on your route. I load a couple of MP3 players with some playlists, and podcasts. In general, the Trans-Canada Highway provides a straight forward route. However if going to Toronto (as opposed to say Ottawa), you should consider going through USA for part of the way. I like to drop down across the border from Winnipeg, head to Duluth, and continue through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, crossing back into Ontario at Port Huron/Sarnia.If you do take the all-Canadian route, I would strongly suggest taking the northern route through Cochrane. It is slightly longer, but almost always faster. The road is flatter, most of the traffic is trucks, and they tend to drive consistently at about 100 km/h. The route along the north shore of Superior has far more car traffic, and you are likely to encounter some cars driving at the (legal speed limit) of 90, with a string of traffic accumulating behind them.If you want to make good time, and yet not wear yourself out, limit your driving to 10, or at most 12 hours per day, including stops. Make reasonably frequent stops, but keep them short. I tend to eat lightly at lunch, buying something where there is counter service rather than sit-down service. If you can, get on the road by 6:00 without eating, and stop for breakfast after an hour or so. You will be able to cover a good distance before car traffic becomes heavier. Quit at around 6 in the evening, have a good meal, relax, and plan where you think you will get to the following evening, and select a few motels closer and farther from this destination. I tend not to make a hotel reservation until around 4pm, so I will have a better idea where I wish to stop, and make a reservation then. Some people prefer to make their reservations in the evening for the next day, in the comfort of their motel room. Some hotels allow you to cancel your reservation before 4pm but others require a day’s notice, particularly those that offer better rates for advanced booking.
