hi i'm laura baker and i'm a cyber security business counselor that runs wyoming's cyber security competition for small business i run this for cyber wyoming a wyoming non-profit using the made safe and wyoming program after this presentation if you have questions please contact your judging committee chair chantel anderson at orders star awards dot promo first of all thank you so much for volunteering to become a judge for the 2020 competition we really appreciate your time i want to especially thank chantel for managing the judging committee for the second year in a row because of feedback from last year we're putting together this background video for for you first a couple of housekeeping items the judging reports will be to you by the end of august a fairly quick turnaround is needed by mid-september so be sure to send your rubric to chantal by then business winners will be speaking at the virtual cyber security conference on october 5th through 7th and if you would like a free ticket to attend that conference for as a thank you for judging please let chantal know and we'll be sure to organize it we wanted to quickly walk you through the process that businesses go through in the competition at the beginning often cyber leaders don't see the light at the end of the tunnel so first we start with a survey to see how comfortable they are with technology and how alone they feel in their cyber leader role second we ask them to tell us what they perceive as the company's strengths and what the company needs might might what the company might need help with often we hear that the cyber leader is unsure if the company culture will accept the cyber security measures then we check to see if there are any current crises we emphasize that even if they might feel alone today they do have others on their team that are willing to help and finally we ask them what they want to get out of the program then we schedule a really long meeting with them to determine where they currently stand with cyber security we ask questions as simple as how many laptops do you have that travel outside the office two what are your remote access rules for employees who work from home this checklist that you see on the screen is based on the national institute of standards and technology's small business checklist and encompasses most of the identify and protect components that of that national standard the checklist is maintained by cyber wyoming technology company members and reviewed on a semi-annual basis so although it is based on national best practices it is still wyoming grown for wyoming businesses then we compile that long meeting into a current situation report with some recommendations and we get to work we meet with the businesses at least once a month to go through the status keep them motivated and feed them templates and tools as they're needed at the end we perform the survey again and see their confidence level rise which is really satisfying for us the companies are also placed on a mailing list to remind them to keep up with their cyber security maintenance plans if the companies want to use the made safe and wyoming logo then they have to have their work checked by one of our technology company members some past participants of the competition have gone on to be iso 27001 compliant which is a huge cyber security feather in their cap when we write up the judges reports we put it in one format so it's easier for you to compare and we provide this rubric for you the rubric's two highest categories are progress or look how far we've come and innovation which is how creative were the solutions that the cyber leader found within his or her own organization and that's it i hope this background information helps you understand the process and your judging responsibilities thank you again for supporting this competition to date the made safe and wyoming program has helped 35 businesses in wyoming and you are a big part of that please note do not call cyber wyoming if you have questions it is important that our staff and the judges remain separate so that the competition remains unbiased if you have questions contact chantel anderson at orders at star awards dot promo
