What was it like to work in an office before the birth of personal computers, email, and fax machines?
I started work in 1972, but before then I used to visit my father at his office in Paris, so the answers are from a mix of these periods.One of the big differences was the existence of two institutions:the typing poolthe card punching pool (for programming environments)White-collar workers, managers and programmers almost never touched a keyboard: memos and letters were either written on paper or spoken into a Dictaphone , which would then be sent to the pool .Senior executives had secretaries and they may have had an assistant to run back and forth to the pool and check the work before it was handed back.Programming was less fun (and slower) than today: write down your program on coding sheets and send them down to the pool for punching on cards on a card punch . No interactive access - at my first job, we were allowed one compilation run per day (because the card reader was busy for other people's work, production systems runs etc. Any error in the punch card (spelling of keywords, punctuation) and you got back a listing, so we used to check things very thoroughly!As I gathered more job experience, I was allowed interactive access (a Teletype terminal ).By the mid-seventies I was working on mini-computers (Data General , DEC PDP's) and those did have VDU's so the card punch pool disappeared. The typing pool disappeared also and was replaced by word-processing operators (a word-processing machine was a dedicated micro-computer which only did word-processing (not wysiwyg though); the IBM Selectric passed into history . White-collar workers were not allowed to use the WP machines, the secretaries had to do it.In the early 1960's, computer rooms were fortresses, with safe doors, freezing temperatures and technicians (high priests) dressed in white lab coats.Facsimile machines did exist in the 60s... huge noisy expensive things but the main means of fast inter-location written communications was the telex machine .One more thing - when I say that "white collar workers were not allowed to use xyz" that is mostly true, but also, we had no wish to be taken for secretaries (or for computer operators) by touching these things. Some of us learned early that this was an advantage, so didn't.
