For a lot of companies in a lot of industry sectors, it's turned out that the Internet has eaten everybody's lunch, and no one has figured out how to get lunch from the Internet. (via The Free Dictionary [ http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/desktop+publishing ]) Never mind financial printing. Never mind the Internet. Let's travel back to the late 1980s -- the DTP (desktop publishing -- or as we printers call it, dipshit publishing) was already on a collision course with the printing world. Before the Internet and DTP, anything that needed page makeup and bulk numbers just had to go through a printing company (of any kind). It's an inescapable fact of life. Even for bulk photocopies, it's the printer that usually had the high-speed, high-output copying machines. Yes, we printers used to do all the extremely useful stuff that nearly every useless airhead brands as useless stuff we used to do in the old days. Printing used to be craft; now it's crap. FINANCIAL PRINTING IS WHAT? (via FC Services [ http://www.doremusfp.com/financial-communications-services ]) No, we're not Wall Street Guys. We're not bankers and the like. We're printers, and sometimes we even feel like those stupid desktop printers too. For those who might wonder, financial printer is just another name for security printer. It's just terminology. A security printer who specialises in printing IPO prospectuses, annual reports and similar is a "financial printer." A security printer remains a "security printer" when he prints banknotes, legislation, bank forms, cheques, and assorted government bumpf like landing cards, tax return forms, etc. It's just like the "bible printer" -- just a book printer who specialises in bibles. I've printed confidential or secret non-financial publications for international NGOs and other public bodies before, so in their eyes I'm a security printer who happens to also be a financial printer. I mean, none of the things a financial printer does is any different from what a commercial printer does. The difference is working routines, and that's largely invisible even to other printers. The financial printer (who is a security printer) works with extremely tight deadlines, security protocols, the authorities breathing down his neck, and the material getting "amended" all the time -- aspects that 99% of commercial printers don't have to contend with on a daily or even hourly basis. And we only charge marginally higher than commercial printers for the [expletive] 'drama' we get from the bankers, lawyers, accountants and sundry cattle known as government regulators. ENVELOPE OF PROTECTION (via Pascuzzi Law) [ http://www.pascuzzilaw.com/uncategorized/two-new-disclosure-requirements-california-commercial-real-estate-landlords-owners/ ] The Internet's impact on financial printers hadn't been as bad as it had been on commercial printers (the great mass of ordinary printing companies). A large part of the "protective envelope" is that financial print is part of the legal reporting and disclosure requirements for listed companies. Listed companies are legally required to submit a litany of product and IPO prospectuses, quarterly and annual reports, transaction reports, stock ownership disclosures, schedules, public announcements, etc, to the regulatory authorities on a regular basis. These "filings" are for the public record. Regulatory authorities worldwide require the filings be in print form (the default) and anything else (i.e. online publication) as an add-on. Indeed, the regulatory framework requires the printing be done by a third party (hence us) and not by the underwriting banks or the listed companies themselves. Thing is, envelopes get ripped open too, and like condoms, they're disposed of after use too. THE INVISIBLE LUNCH-EATING MONSTER (via Monster Lunch Box [ http://blog.naturebox.com/posts/monster-lunch-box ]) The monster that ate financial printers' lunch isn't the Internet. It's electronic filing -- like the EDGAR filings [ http://www.sec.gov/edgar/aboutedgar.htm ] with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). EDGAR started around 1993/94. Other countries have something similar from the same time. Even today, electronic filing is still largely additional to print filing. The fact that financial printers still get to handle most of the e-filing needs of listed companies is merely out of convenience since we handle their other financial printing needs anyway. Before the rise of e-filing, we'd typeset several rounds of surrealistic markups, output the final proofs, the whimsical client team finally signs off, the absent-minded regulators sign off, and then off to the presses! We print the crap, pack it, and deliver the crates to the regulators and/or banks. Of course, a week later the banks and regulators ring up and pay us to cart the crap away for pulping or the landfill. It all sounds incestuous, wasteful and inefficient described that way, but it's anything but in real life. There's a lot of labour, materials, transport, you name it, to upkeep lots of people's livelihoods across several different industry sectors. It's a lot less incestuous or wasteful than the food or garment sectors, I'll tell you that for less than 10 cents on the dollar. In the last 10 or 15 years, many countries' filing rules allow the companies to do their own e-filing, so the financial printer gets bypassed and sticks with the printed part. Unfortunately for us, the rules are extending the range of companies that need only e-filing and forgo print filing. So that slice of the print market is evaporating for us. We rue the day when e-filing is the default and optionalising print filing. The SEC claims ... err, states ... that e-filing helps transparency of dealings and protects the investor. We printers make no public opinion on the matter, which is another way of saying our private opinion is different (let's put it that way). There's not going to be a lot of investors when the investors themselves are running out of work and income. Then again, I'm not a Wall Street Guy, so it's none of my business, isn't it? Unfortunately, that is the best time to learn, while doing your job later, you will be so absorbed in your work that you will barely find time for yourself, forget using that time to learn something. So utilize this time to its fullest. There are no hard and fast rules as to what is necessary and what is not, however the following things, if learnt, practiced and internalized, will enable you to stand apart in your professional career quickly. 1. Learn C++. Yes, not Python, Java or Lisp. All languages have their own nuances and have their own areas of usage. However, C++ teaches you programming fundamentals in a way which is nigh impossible in any other language. Yes, Python is easiest to pick up, and gaining momentum for large scale tasks, but because it is so easy, it masks you from the arcane complexities of types and memory management. After swearing by Python for 4 years, when you start working in Microsoft Edge team, you will be clueless to find that your seemingly innocuous code prompted 300 code-review comments to make it more efficient and memory-amenable. So learn C++, it will teach you computer fundamentals like nothing else. Start with the basic books like those by Herbert Schildt, then gradually graduate to the ones by Herb Sutter and Scott Meyers. You will be awestruck at the confidence you gain once you have mastered C++. 2. Make Linux your desktop OS. Windows and Mac are great, but if you want to learn computer science the hard (and right) way, Linux should be your mantra. Don’t just get a laptop with Linux pre-installed. Get an empty laptop, learn how to install Linux, learn how to recompile the source code to make your custom Kernel. Open a damned account and fire the question. StackOverflow has experts and nerds who can trump Mark Zuckerberg on any day. Utilize them, learn from them, and when the time is right, make sure to answer questions posed by newbies and return the favor. (Using StackOverflow is a necessary skill, learn it while in college. ) If you know Linux inside out, how the various layers work in tandem, how all I/O devices are treated as files, how file system is structured, you are on your way to be a Guru. On your first day in Amazon, you can write a wicked cool shell script that automates a substantial (and boring) portion of the build procedure, and it will wow your senior colleagues. :) 3. Learn at least one build system. This is often understated, and to my knowledge, most universities don’t even bother including any course on this topic. But this is an absolute sine qua non. You will be working in companies like Microsoft and Google and Amazon, which operate on unimaginable scales, catering to million requests per second. The codebase that powers such a complicated system is equally complicated and nuanced, to manage it, a robust build system needs to be in place. All those who are used to code in a lone IDE in their lone laptop at home find themselves at sea when they suddenly find that a code-review followed by “code-push” is not sufficient, they are expected to take that code to production by building it in the pipelines, open multiple gates to push them from one stage to another, resolve merge conflicts, ensure that the test code is running correctly, get sign-off from QA before the final gates are opened, etc. Trust me, it is overwhelming. All companies have their own build-systems, so it is not possible to learn all of them. However, all of them have the basic ideas similar, so if you know one build-system inside-out, suffices to say that you know them all. Which one should you learn? Any one, really. But I prefer Ant. It is very easy to learn, and there are some excellent resources to learn Ant, like the OReilly books. If during your first week in Amazon, you not only complete the feature you were assigned, but also take it to production by building it in the pipelines all by yourself, your manager will be suitably impressed! 4. Learn Version Control. A corollary of the above point, it is another aspect of maintaining mammoth codebases. Imagine a project where 100 people are working simultaneously. How to ensure everybody’s changes to all source code are properly merged, resolved and archived? Version control. There are many, but Git is becoming the defacto standard everywhere, be in Amazon, or Google, or Microsoft. So learn Git. Open a dummy project in Github, clone it in your desktop after installing Git, learn how to push code, pull code and merge and resolve conflicts, how to revert catastrophic changes. Trust me, during your first code push, by the time you are ready to push your first code change in Google (you are possibly still a Noogler), 5 other people would have already pushed code. How cool would it be if you can resolve all conflicts by yourself and tell your manager that the code is pushed and ready to be built in pipelines? So master Git. Inside out. Your productivity in office will be directly proportional to how expert you are at Git. 5. Contribute to Open Source projects. It may be anything, really. May be you fell in love with Qt, and wrote a cool desktop app in Qt that lets you sign on a pixel map through your touchpad, and using patented algorithms, find out if that is indeed, your signature. Publish it in Github, implore Qt to highlight it in their “Sample Apps built with Qt” section. If they do, you have become famous! If they don’t, well, you get a taste of the bar you will be expected to meet in your professional career. Not getting ideas of your own? Take any open source project out there. May be Poco, a versatile C++ library. Contribute to it. They are looking for new hands for some of their modules like PDF support, be that hand. There are millions of lines of code already in place, your code has to be built on top of that, it will require you to understand the existing codebase inside out before you start working on top of it. This is a skill you will need to have from day 1, be it Google or Microsoft. Wouldn’t it be cool if you can understand the entire Edge workflow by yourself and make code changes on top of it during your first week in Microsoft, instead of asking a senior for a KT (knowledge transfer) and being able to work only after that? 6. Participate in Hackathons. This has many advantages, like above, it keeps you abreast of the bar you will likely to be required to meet in your professional career, because in hackathons you generally get to meet the cream of the crop. Whizkids. They will inspire you. Plus you will be able to stay in touch with niche topics, like Machine Learning, Image Processing. You don’t need to be an expert, but a basic knowledge always helps. Imagine your first month in Microsoft and it is Hackathon time. Everybody is submitting cool ideas, but you cannot, because you don’t know Machine Learning, and hence you don’t even know what it can possibly do. Your basic knowledge of Machine Learning can help you here. Hackathons also teach you to the process of learning new things rapidly. Today’s Hackathon is on Image Processing, tomorrow’s will be based on idea related to Deep Learning. Obviously you cannot master Deep Learning in one day (or even a year), so you will have to understand it quickly, its basics at least, and how to utilize it for the purpose at hand. This is a very useful skill in real life. Imagine your team in signNow changes, you are moved from Photoshop team to Dreamweaver. Codebases are different, hell, even the language is different, and whatever you have learnt in past 3 years is of no use to you. You will be given time to get comfortable, but if you have mastered the skill of learning things quickly on the fly, you can get productive in the new team earlier than expected, and this will get noticed, and gradually build your reputation as THAT guy, who can start working on anything, anytime. We had one such guy in Amazon, we used to call him not by his name, but God. How cool is that? :) 7. Participate in coding competitions. You don’t have to be topper in Codejam or Topcoder or Codechef. Spoj will suffice. Very few teams in very companies actually require algorithmic and data structure knowledge. But this is what is mainly asked in interviews. So if you are tired of your work in Google and want to switch to Microsoft, you don’t have to spend three months preparing for the interview by going through Gayle Lackmann and Leetcode (because you have forgotten how to traverse binary tree in pre-order fashion without recursion. Your 3 year work in Google never required these stuff!). You are a regular in Spoj, such problems are child’s play for you! So you can crack the interview tomorrow itself, and bid Google adieu in no time. Wicked! Last but not the least, stay focussed, as Balaji said in his answer. It seems trivial, but it is the hardest. You will find your friends writing CAT, or GRE, or GMAT. Some just scored a perfect 100 percentile, and had to open an Instagram account to post a picture of that result. Some scored a 1595 in SAT. Don’t let their achievements sway you into thinking that you are missing out on the cool things, that you should devote part of your time to preparing for CAT as well. Stay focussed, stay good on your goals. You will kill them all!
