What are some useful SaaS (software as a service) tools for small businesses?
The logical route for most small businesses that are operating on tight budgets is to start with free SaaS software. There are many out there but you will find that they are limited in features and capabilities. You may want to have a mix of free tools and set aside a reasonable investment for paid solutions since there are lots of affordably priced, SMB-friendly SaaS software offerings in the market. Here’s a great resource on SaaS tools for small business you may want to check out.The following are my suggestions of software categories and the respective products that are most useful in y...

What is the biggest scam that every Indian must be aware of?
KFC - KFC people will not miss any opportunity to scam people. I had faced many instances previously and another one happened yesterday.Charged me extra without notifying me and refused to reverse the charges.I went to KFC in HSR layout. Wanted to eat a simple potato crisper. Ordered that and was TOLD that it is ₹45. Gave a 500 ₹ note. Cashier took 5–10 mins and delayed my order and then returned me ₹ 452 (not 455) saying that he has ₹10 note and not ₹5. I let it go because it was a small amount. Went to the table. While eating my food I noticed on screen display that same burger was ₹40 and not ₹45. I also noticed that these people had not given me the bill. Went back to the counter and asked for the bill. Response -”Sir, we threw away the bill. We cannot give it because it is in dustbin somewhere.” I thought something is fishy and still insisted. If not original give me duplicate bill. Lo and behold - 5 mins later the original crumpled bill was present on the counter. And what I noticed is that I have been charged ₹5 extra. Here is the picture.I asked why the 5 extra and they said it is for some hope foundation.Me: That's ok but why is it charged without asking me.KFC:Sir, this is for hope foundation.Me: but WHY is it charged without asking me??KFC: ?????????Me: please reverse the charges. I want my money back. (I was angry because they had done it without my permission)KFC: Sir we cannot do that since bill has already been generated. You should have told us at time of billing that you should not be charged for hope foundation.Me: but you did not inform me that you are charging me extra for this. You did not even give me the bill.By then manager came.Manager: sir it is your fault, you should have raised issue at time bill was generated. After a lot of arguments they said sorry but then I looked at other bills crumpled and lying nearby. All had the same included. I tried to take a picture of them also but manager said since those are not my bills hence I cannot photograph them. At least here he was correct.I returned unsatisfied.Another instance - KFC charged me ₹ 60 for an ice-cream with MRP (maximum retail price) of ₹40. Photos were uploaded on Twitter and again the same sorry response from KFC.Beware people.Another point-one customer was not happy with his chicken since it was not hot at the bottom of his tub. He had eaten the top pieces. KFC person took the chicken piece from his half eaten tub and kept it BACK WITH THE OTHERS and gave him fresh ones. If this guy was diseased I am pretty sure some other people would be sick after eating the KFC soiled food.

What is the best tool for scraping email addresses from people if I know the domain, first and last name?
If you’re a Gmail user, you’ve might have seen there are many different tools available to explore and make the most of your experience. Gmail has the capability to do lots for you and your time, it does it because it’s developer-friendly and allows - altogether with Google Chrome - that you use your other apps in it.But it goes beyond just that. Many tools add-on to your message and make it more powerful, so you can do stuff such as tracking emails (like openings and analytics), send reminders, get corrections, create polls and many other things that work greatly with your team. So, let’s start it out by listing the most useful ones I found:DragAppIf you’ve ever worked with Trello, or MeisterTask, you know how good they are to organise your jobs and make you more aware of what’s next in the company. However, sometimes your plate is too full and you don’t have time to open more and more tabs - or apps. DragApp has a very decent tool which works directly from your inbox. The amount of time you gain by using it is just crazy. It’s worth a try, definitely.FullContactFullContact is a tools which empowers how you see and manage your contacts. You notice how easy it becomes to organise your contacts with tags, add notes to them and just see how beautiful it is along with your Gmail inbox.GmailMeterThis tool is great to analyse your email habits. It sends you reports of how many messages you’ve been senfding, for instance. It works great for if your job is related to the customer, because it also tracks how much time it takes for you to answer an email and it is so good to see. After you use it, you begin truly understanding how your habits work in email.ReplyUpThis is probably the best tool for you to have your emails answered. ReplyUp allows you to generate template emails, track everyone who received it, opened it, read it, replied it… and the list goes on. It has a platform which is so simple to use and make a great experience. Also, if you have a big email list, like in a CSV file, you can send emails in a bulk, which improves your time drastically. And it’s really just so easy to personalise.SnapmailHave you ever needed a tool which could make your email more secure when sharing real important information? Well, here is one.Snapmail brings the best of Snapchat for Gmail. Let’s say you need to send a password to a coworker, but after that you really hope they erase it from their mailbox and even the trash bin - which, let’s be honest, they’re high-likely to forget.Well, you send your email, define a time and it just disappears. Almost magical, huh?So, which was your favourite of the above? I hope you have enjoyed this list!

What’s the best piece of advice for a bootstrapped startup?
60 useless bits of advice to the first time bootstrapped entrepreneur. Its always easier to sell product than to raise moneyThe cheapest form of investment, is proceeds from sales in excess of costs. If you are not talking to the decision maker, you are not talking to the decision maker.Execution on marketing and sales always trumps better product.Perfectionism is a disease. It can kill you.If on an operating basis, you can save your customer X in labour, you should monetarily walk away with a quarter of that value. If your product does not increase productivity, its entertainment.Customization is an opportunity to build service revenue.Only hire engineering talent after your service revenue can cover the cost, never before.Design engineering is not the same as process engineering. They are separate specializations. That is true for hard goods as its true for shipping bits down glass pipes.Every sale incurs liability.Design engineering will increase your sales, process engineering will diminish your liabilities.Packaged product is product that sells itself, installs itself and maintains itself.Anything else is service revenue.Selling and invoicing one box has the same cost as cutting one invoice for 100 boxes. Make sure you are concentrating on the 100 box opportunities. Single box you either put up on the self service model, or you can take the hit and give it away from free.A low priced introductory single box sale is detrimental to sales because a multi seat license will be priced as a discount to that price. Might as well give the single box away for free. Its never to early to product differentiate. If you know what features single users use as compared to corporate users, or what extra features corporates need, then create two products.Often all that is required for product differentiation is a change in the permissions and some branding.Back to my previous point, invoicing a 100-pack costs the same as invoicing 1 unit.If you are going to cut 1000 invoices a day, your back-office needs to be run entirely on script. No exceptions. Unless its a 1000 user license. If you are not building product, you are selling product. Any other activity is parasitic to the venture.Prospecting for leads is a singular job description.Cold calling is a singular discipline.Making sales calls is a discipline.Proposal writing is a discipline.Closing the deal is a discipline.Customer training is a discipline. And after sales support is a discipline. You cannot burden one person with all the above skills.Sales is not a solo activity. ITS A PROCESS.You do not have a sales process until the day you are confident firing your first customer.A sales person’s contact list is worth more than your product. Until your product sells itself. If one person is happy with your product they might tell 2 people about it.If one person is unhappy with your product they will tell 20 people about it.People confuse their ability to criticize with intelligence. That is why they are more prone to criticize than to praise. The balance of which is your brand equity.“Would you recommend this product to your boss?” That is the only question of value. The Wealth of Nations is built on Specialization.Do you file your own taxes? Probably not. Why then would you expect your accountant to have programming skills to use your product?. Your customer is not stupid, your customer has a different specialization.Your tool should allow them to format the information in a manner useful the next person in the corporate value chain. The product cannot be congruent with the subject matter specialist. The product has to be a good enough proxy of the subject matter, so as to allow the non subject matter specialist to operate within the value chain.Sales people and management use accounting software all day long. They are not required to be CPA’s. If that is so, why is it that the process to do a return involves six entries that only a trained certified public accountant knows how to do? A proxy for that question must be asked of all product.Products are always proxies for other specializations, even within the specialization. Never ever think that your specialist user is a specialist. 95% of accountants below the age of 40 today would not know how to do payroll. Or expect a programmer to know Hadoop...If you can get the specialists within the corporate value chain to customize the product on behalf of the non specialist users, you will have good product. But the specialists within the corporate structure, rarely if ever, will make them selves dispensable. Which is why a sales return requires three management signatures and six book keeping entries.Twenty five years ago I wrote a brilliant piece of code. It would have put six people out of work. They slashed my tires that week. Then they fired me for not being a team player.Great product will be rejected. Always. If you are not talking to the decision maker, you are not talking to the decision maker. If on an operating basis, you can save your customer X in labour, you should monetarily walk away with a quarter of that value.Everything else is entertainment. At one time the Poet Laureate was King. But soon enough making money involved writing novels. Then the money was in movies. Then in television. Then the money makers were electronic games.Fifty years from now interactive virtual reality will make people running movie studios as quaint as poet laureates. That means that if you are doing what you are really good at, tomorrow you are a scab covered street pit bull with a bad attitude on the way to the bad-dog impound. Fourteen days away from euthanasia…Bootstrapped means always being outside your comfort zone.If you are not comfortable with that, get a corporate job and pray some twenty something MBA consulting dweeb does not downsize you….Thanks for the ask! That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Is faster than light travel possible?
I hope not.My reasoning is strange but compelling: if humans can travel faster than light, it will demonstrate that free will does not exist. That discovery would sadden me.The logic is described in detail in my recently published Now—The Physics of Time. I explain it in a new paradox I invented called “the tachyon murder”. (This is a paradox that I invented when teaching relativity theory at UC Berkeley.) Here is the section from my book in which I describe the tachyon murder:——-beginning of excerpt from Now: The Physics of Time——-Tachyon MurderThe strange relativity result that the order of events can flip for different reference frames leads us into a new aspect of reality: the deep issues of causality and free will. These issues can be dramatized by the story of the tachyon murder.A tachyon is a hypothetical particle that travels faster than the speed of light. Remarkably, relativity does not prohibit particles from traveling that fast. It says only that massless particles must travel at lightspeed, and that particles that have a real rest mass cannot travel at that speed (since the gamma factor would be infinite, and they would have infinite energy). The equations don’t prohibit faster-than-light travel per se….Yet despite the upside of [discovering a tachyon], I decided many years ago not to bother searching for a tachyon. My reason borders on the religious. I believe that I have free will, and the existence of tachyons would violate that belief. Let me explain.Imagine that Mary is standing 40 feet away from John. She has a tachyon gun that fires tachyon bullets that move at 4c, four times the speed of light. She fires. Light moves at a speed of 1 foot per nanosecond (billionth of a second), so her tachyons move at 4 feet per nanosecond. In just 10 nanoseconds, the tachyon bullet enters John’s heart and kills him. Let’s assume he dies instantly.Mary is brought to trial. She doesn’t deny any of the facts I just described, but she insists on an unusual change of venue. She says she has a right to argue the case in whatever reference frame she chooses. They are all valid, the judge knows, so he allows her to proceed. She chooses a frame moving at half lightspeed, ½ c. Since that frame is moving slower than the speed of light, according to relativity it is a valid reference frame. In the Earth frame, the two events (fire gun, hit heart) are separated by +10 nanoseconds. As I show in Appendix 1, the same two events described in a reference frame moving at ½ c have a time separation of –15.5 nanoseconds. The negative sign means that the two events occur in the opposite order. The bullet enters the victim’s heart before Mary fires the gun! Mary has the perfect alibi. John was already dead when she pulled the trigger. You can’t murder a dead person. She expects to beat the rap.The tachyon murder example is based on the same relativity principle that caused confusion in the twin and pole-in-the-barn paradoxes. If two events are sufficiently separated in space, and not too different in time, then there will be frames in which the order of events will reverse. Such distant events are called “space-like.” Two events that occur near each other but separated in time are called “time-like.” The order of space-like events depends on the frame of reference; the order of time-like events does not.… I refer you to Appendix 1 [of my new book Now] for the explicit calculation. Is the tachyon murder scenario possible? How could analysis in the ½ c frame be valid, if it has such an absurd implication? Does this mean that tachyons don’t exist, or does it mean that relativity is nonsense? What if tachyons are really found? …One possible resolution for the tachyon murder paradox is that, in this world that has tachyon guns, Mary does not have free will. Even though she pulled the trigger after John died, she had no choice but to do so, since without free will, choice is illusory. All of her actions arise from influences and forces outside of herself. John died because it was inevitable that Mary would pull the trigger; the inevitability of physics created the combined scenario of shooting and death, and the order in which they occurred is irrelevant. There is no paradox if the world is governed by causal physics equations. The scenario presents a problem only if you think people have free will, if you believe that Mary could have decided not to fire the gun. If physics rules, then she does only what the various forces and influences on her cause her to do.——-end of excerpt from Now: The Physics of Time——-So if any normal object, such as you, can travel faster than the speed of light, it means that free will does not exist. I consider it remarkable to realize that free will has actual consequences for physics, and that we can describe a discovery that would falsify it. I don’t think this astonishing fact has been published prior to my book.On Friday September 23, 2016, at 2 pm Eastern time and 11 am Pacific, I am hosting a Quora session in which I will try to answer as many questions as I can. The topic is time, its flow, the meaning of the mysterious and ephemeral moment we call now, my new book, cosmology, and anything else of interest. I think you can get to the Quora page for this session by clicking here.

What is the biggest scam you’ve ever seen?
Personally? I have two.I used to work for a Home Depot store. I sold lumber and building materials, which means insulation, drywall, roofing, fencing, ladders and masonry products. Quite a bit of my business was in special-order products. We sold a customer two pallets of special order shingles. We had never sold this model of shingle to anyone before. The manufacturer brought them to us on Friday and we called the customer. “My contractor will be there on Monday.”On Saturday, someone showed up in the returns line with a bundle of these shingles. “I bought these and don’t need them, so I bro...

When is an extra payment required in the Canadian healthcare system? Are appointments always free?
I’m a Canadian from birth. If I have a sore throat, sinus infection, sprained ankle, depression, concussion, etc., I go to the doctor. Get treated. Go home without getting my wallet out. I go to get my prescription filled, and because my spouse has benefits, I pay nothing. Since I’m over 65, if my spouse didn’t have benefits I would pay $2.00. No bill comes in the mail.I’ve been in emergency for 12 hours to be treated for asthma and received training for prevention. No bill.My spouse had chest pains. I took him to emergency. He was seen immediately. Treated. Lectured by Nurse Ratched on lifestyle changes, and released. He was there for 12 hours. No bill.I had my THIRD spinal fusion a couple of years ago. Yuck. But it was successful and I’m happy with the results. No bill. This is how it works: everyone pays into the medical pot through their taxes. Our taxes are higher to make this possible. Then anyone needing medical or mental health help simply gets it without paying first or after. This system unites our population and everyone has similar medical experiences. The homeless man having a heart attack will be treated before a rich man’s daughter with a broken leg. All of us want this humane, equality-based, and efficient system. As a population, we can’t tolerate the kind of suffering and premature death that comes with a medical system that requires people to choose between feeding their children and medical care. It is an ethical choice we have made to pay higher taxes so that every single person can have equal medical care. A billionaire and a struggling single mom will have the same appendectomy experience. If a rich person and a poor person require quadruple heart surgery, their experience will be identical. If a rich child and a poor child need a prosthesis, the process is the same, with no bill at the end of it.We can’t have our elderly people dying early for want of shunts, medication, life-lengthening procedures, etc.A close friend of mine, who is so poor that often she can not afford a bus pass, was diagnosed with breast and lymph node cancer. She has had two years of four types of chemo, surgery, and then radiation at our nearby cancer centre. Now she is being re-tested for everything. TWO YEARS of it! She paid nothing. Being poor had nothing to do with quality of treatment or timeline. She got the same quality of treatment that a wealthy person would receive. This is what medical care is like in all the G8 countries, with the exception of the US.So my question is why don’t middle class and wealthy Americans want poor people to have access to equal medical care? What is behind that?Note Edit: I’m adding scant info on Canada’s most important citizen. He is Tommy Douglas who is considered the Father of Medicare. He felt that the most important issue in the 1960s was to get medical care out of the marketplace. We have universal Medicare because of this man.

What's an amazing loophole you found regarding free food?
Hello friend I am Nancy Brown. I am from Europe, Netherlands. Couple months ago i visited New Delhi, India with my sweetheart. Me and my husband went to visit Palika Bazar. The market situated at underground. After visiting the place we went Aksardham Temple. The place was amazing. We watched a lot of golden statues. We watched a water show. After finishing the show we came back to New Delhi. The time was 12.30 Am. After that we went to Sikh Temple that means Gurdwara. The place was pretty cool. Suddenly we saw some people distributing tea for free. I told my husband what’s happening? He told me nothing people give tea or samosa (Indian Snack) for free. Then i did not miss the chance. I also sat down with them and enjoyed the snack. That was my first time to have free food. My husband took my picture when I ate. Then we visited the Temple. The temple is so cool. Every people did work for free. I am also did some work like cleaning the floor. The place is holy place. At 2 Am, We again saw people giving food for free. I was impress. And i also took a little. The food was a glass of milk and Rajma (Indian Food) with bread, Puri (Indian Food) and many things. Actually i don’t know the name of food. Really the food was very delicious. Here is my dish…..Actually people really do hard work in the temple. Every single day a lots of people gather in the temple. Many country have Sikh Temples.Community is sacrosanct to Sikhs. They are not to be fucked with. That same notion means that they are generous in giving back, especially when it comes to langar, an incredible meal that is free for anyone who wants it.Inside, the air is heavy and scented with spices—usually a combination of subji (a Punjabi term which means a blend of vegetables cooked with tomatoes and spices), daal, rice, and roti, along with kheer, a sweet rice pudding—which is served in unlimited quantities. You can stuff yourself with lentils until they're pouring out of your ears. The daal I ate was so good I was tempted to go back for fifths.I will never forget the day. Some time i remember the day. It really makes me proud. I really appreciate the Indian people. Thanks a lot Sikh Temples (Gurudwara) for giving the free food.

What are the best ways to validate a startup idea?
Validating your business idea is crucial before you shell out thousands of dollars into building a product, setting up the business and hiring people. I recently spoke to Sam Hysell, he's worked with the Lean Startup team and now works with new entrepreneurs to help them validate their ideas, you can find the interview here: http://apple.co/1LNPWnM. I'll go into brief detail about what we've covered below. The best thing about the time period that we're living in is that technology has enabled entrepreneurs to able to validate their idea at a nominal cost. It has never been cheaper to start an internet business. Here's how I would validate it:1) Set up a landing page. Before you go out and shell out thousands of dollars on hiring a developer, just see if people would even be into the idea by creating a very clear and concise landing page. The landing page should describe what the product is, how it works (3 clear steps) and a sign up button where someone can submit their name to be added to the wait list. Take a look at http://quickmvp.com you can literally set up a landing page in five minutes that contains a clear call to action. You can even test interest levels based on different price points to see if customers would be willing to pay for your service. This is a great tool to help validate your idea and you get great analytics to see how engaged people are with your idea.2) Find out who's interested and bring people towards your landing page to see if people would sign up. If you're getting a lot of signups your steps closer to validating your idea. With Quickvp you could spend $30 on Google ads. I also like this one tool called Http://flutter-app. I use this all the time to test out new features for LawTrades. You can follow accounts that contain your ideal customers very quickly with a few clicks. For instance, if I was opening up a new taco shop, I can use Flutter-app to follow people that follow Chipotle, or Taco bell since my ideal customers are probably following those accounts. Doing this manually would take forever, but you can do this with Flutter very quickly. Make sure your Twitter bio has a link to your landing page so people know what to click on. If a few days go by and your landing page is getting traffic but no signups then tweak the landing page.3) Make sure you're going to Meetup Events and meeting new people face to face to talk to them about the idea! If you're shy, then you MUST come out of your comfort zone. Just find out where your target customers are hanging out and what Meetup Events are they apart of and go there to ask for feedback on your idea. If they like it then have them sign up. Build up the hype! If they sign up, these are going to be the people that your in communication with as your building out your platform, leave an awesome impression so they come back when your platform/service is ready.4) After you have some signups, I would interview them and talk to them about the idea. See what they like about it and why they want to use it. Make sure you also ask them about their feedback about various price points that you have in mind. Interviewing is key because you'll get the feedback you need to build it out. Once you talk to potential users you can fine tune your elevator pitch and really be able to figure out the actual problems that your customers care about. All of these things can help you gauge user interest for what you're doing and I've seen some pretty successful entrepreneurs implement these strategies. You should also visit http://Leanstartupmachine.com they host awesome weekend workshops to help you validate your business idea.I'd love to hear about all the new ideas that are on this question. Feel free to message me! You can always check me out at LawTrades.
