What are some of the interesting facts about India?
When Arsenic Poisoned Its Water Sources, This Village Resorted To An Ancient Solution – And Won! A sprightly 95 year young Dhanikram Verma, inspects wells Itchy skin lesions, changes in skin colour, hardening and thickening of skin into nodules – these were some of the afflictions suffered by the villagers due to arsenic contamination of their drinking water sources. But read how this brave village fought back against this scourge, with even a 95-year old pitching in very actively! What is arsenic?Arsenic in its pure form is a harmless element naturally present in the earth’s surface but when it combines with elements such as oxygen, it turns highly toxic. Most arsenic enters water supplies either from natural deposits in the earth (known as geogenic contamination) or from industrial and agricultural pollution.A single dose of 1.5 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) of body weight can be fatal to human beings. Such a large dose doesn’t come from a one-off instance of drinking water from a polluted source but consuming arsenic-contaminated water for a prolonged period of time, can and does cause it to accumulate and poison the body.Does that imply that the people of Ballia were always being poisoned by arsenic? The answer is no.When did Ballia’s problems start? This story began in 1990, when the government constructed a large number of hand pumps throughout Bihar and UP to provide clean, easy-to-access water to the villagers. The ease of using hand pumps won over the villagers and they began neglecting the existing open wells. Little did they realize that they would pay a large price for this convenience.Effects of arsenic poisoningItchy skin lesions, changes in skin colour, hardening and thickening of skin into nodules became common afflictions of the villagers. Gastrointestinal disturbances, chronic cough and shortness of breath added to their discomfort as well. When this continued for years and affected a majority of residents, the government swung into action in September 2011.Suspecting arsenic poisoning, a fairly unknown subject then, it tested and analysed the village's water sources. The report showed that 31 districts of UP had arsenic levels that were above the safety limit of 10 parts per billion (ppb) set by World Health Organisation (WHO). In some areas, the value was nearly 130 times the prescribed safety limit [1].A boy in Ballia, shows skin lesions caused by arsenic poisoning Source:National Level Monitor Report Effect of prolonged arsenic contamination on health (Source: India Water Portal)Cause of contaminationIn addition to exploring options on how to remedy this situation, they wanted to understand how this contamination happened to get to the root of the problem. No gold mines had been discovered in the area that could have leached this poison into the groundwater since arsenic is a toxic by-product of gold mines. In a typical groundwater table, the very shallow and very deep aquifers tend to contain lesser arsenic. The middle layer tends to be the most contaminated. When the switch over to hand pumps was made, the aquifers were tapped at a depth of 40-60 m leaching out iron and arsenic [2]. That is what aggravated the problem and led the arsenic to signNow the levels that it did.In Ballia district alone, 38% of the hand pumps tested had a higher arsenic content than the mandatory standards as per WHO recommendations [1]. The dilemma for Dilip, as for the others in this area, was to find an alternate, sustainable and safe water source.Remedying the situation in BalliaOne answer was to dig deep tubewells or deep hand pumps that delved into the deeper uncontaminated aquifers, which could be a source of arsenic-free water but the huge costs and the long term safety of these sources was debatable. Over consumption or improper installation would lead to their eventual pollution. The government piped water schemes too could provide safe water, but such large projects need a lot of time and money to be invested. Also, the water treatment in such plants need power, which was another bottleneck in this energy-deficient state. Already the community filters in many arsenic-affected areas lay defunct and useless. Arsenic removal plants & overhead tanks installed by Uttar Pradess Jal Nigam ( UPJN) had failed to contain this crisis, as lack of power supply & poor maintenance became major issues with such mitigation plans. So the villagers came up with a viable solution. Instead of waiting for any of these big buck projects to signNow them, they simply discarded the use of the hand pumps and restored an existing well! They were now healthier, happier and arsenic-free.Project Sankhiya, a model of arsenic mitigation, too adopts this strategy of reviving dug wells. UPJN & SWSM now plan to take this forward and cover the entire district of Ballia in the next two years. They plan to revive wells and the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) will be responsible for the construction work & bacteriological cleaning of these dug wells in their villages.Villagers in Ballia district were suffering from skin-lesions, hyper-keratosis and melanosis (pigmentation). Upon realizing that dug wells are a source of arsenic free water, they began cleaning existing wells for reuse. Today more and more villagers join hands to keep their water sources safe and hygienic. A 12 member, well cleaning team is led by a spirited 95 year 'young' enthusiast, Dhanik Ram Verma. He lowers himself down on ropes in each revived well for a personal inspection. Now old, disused and discarded wells are being cleaned and revived. Wells that were once an integral part of the village culture, are slowly regaining their lost value and importance. For the community and the villages, these wells have become not only the focal point of a safe water source but also the start of a sparkling, arsenic free life. Finally, all is ’well’.A community works together for safe, clean water. Reviving disused well to get arsenic free water, a 12 member team of workers, goes from village to village in their endeavor to provide them with a safe source of water.References: [1] Report of the Central Team on Arsenic mitigation in rural drinking water sources in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh State[2] Talk on arsenic[3] Page on indiawaterportal.org

What are some things to keep in mind when building an online marketplace?
Hi there!Online marketplaces are booming now. Such big names as Amazon or eBay are on everyone’s lips, and it is not surprising that you are curious about building a similar platform. My team has a solid background in creating online marketplaces. In this answer, I will gladly share our experience and tell you about things that are worth focusing on.Let’s discuss this hot topic.1. Choose the type of your future online marketplaceFor starters, decide what you’re going to sell. When you know the product, you will easily understand what marketplace type (B2B, B2C or C2C) will suit your business the most. The choice of the online marketplace type is very important since it will directly influence monetization strategies and marketing campaigns. The classification of online marketplaces can be presented in the following way.According to another classification, online marketplaces are divided into two groups: vertical and horizontal. Vertical marketplaces focus on offering specific goods or services to particular customers. Horizontal platforms sell various products to a broad audience.2. Define proper monetization strategyThe next thing you should care about is the revenue model. To put it more simply, you should decide how you will charge people for using your website.I advise you to pay attention to the following popular monetization strategies:Subscription fee - users subscribe to take advantage of your service;Transaction fee - you get profit from each transaction that took place on your marketplace;Listing fees - sellers pay for their products to be listed on your platform;Premium listings - suppliers pay for their goods to stay higher in the feed for a week;Advertising - you charge advertisers to promote their products and get more visibility within your platform.3. Select the right user acquisition techniqueEvery new online marketplace faces the so-called chicken and egg problem. They have to attain both sellers and buyers, but either side will not sign in without the other.Luckily, some strategies successfully solve this issue. The most popular tactics include:Focus on a specific nicheLive eventsTime or demand constraintsA deal with renowned userSubsidizing the most valuable side of the marketGaining the hardest side firstBecoming a producerWe have covered this topic in more detail in our article: 7 Smart Ways to Overcome the Chicken and Egg Problem for Online Marketplaces.4. Choose a software solutionYou have defined the product, the type of your future marketplace, and the monetization strategy. All that is left to do now is to build your platform. There are two options. You can opt for ready-made software or develop your online marketplace from scratch. The first solution is more efficient since you don’t have to spend time on wireframing, developing, or testing. However, in the second case, you will get the product that will meet your specific requirements.5. Find the right provider of software development servicesThe last but not the least thing you should keep in mind is the development team that will be responsible for building your online marketplace. Again, you have several options. You can engage in building an e-commerce platform with your in-house development team. Thus, you will bring your employees closer together, make them motivated and productive. You can also use the services of freelance developers, however this option includes certain risks. The best option is to choose a software consultancy company with vast experience in creating online marketplaces, which is able to demonstrate a strong portfolio of delivered products. Thus, you will be sure that you will get a stable and reliable solution. These are the basic aspects of building an online marketplace, I hope my answer was helpful! If you interested for more information on the topic, I recommend our article for further reading: How to Start Your Own Marketplace.P.S. If you need any help or advice on creating your own online marketplace - be sure to get in touch with us! We would love to help bring your idea to reality.

How does Oliver Emberton create the graphics for his Quora posts?
In a few minutes I'll teach you how to make funky images like this:People ask me what software I use, so I'll tell you: it doesn't matter. There are countless free programs* that can draw rectangles and text. It's like asking what typewriter an author uses - really, you want to learn how to write. So in this post I'm going to teach you quickly about palette, type and layout to make designs that look good in minutes. Knowing a few principles can help you present, decorate and even dress better. Just don't blame me if everyone suddenly wants to have sex with you.1. PALETTEYou want to start thinking of colours using a system known as HSV (Hue, Saturation and Value) - this will help you understand how colours work together. Hue is the colour - e.g. red, blue, purple. Hues go in a circle through all the colours of the rainbow. Saturation is how colourful the colour is. Saturated colours are rich and sometimes sickly. De-saturated colours are more subtle and subdued. If you remove all saturation from a colour, you end up with a pure grey.Value is how bright the colour is, ranging from pure black to white, with shades in between. Why do you care? Because almost all the 'rules' of good colour can be expressed easily in terms of hue, saturation and value. For example:Adjacent hues complement each other well. Think colours in the rainbow that are next to each other:Distant hues - when drawn on top of each other - usually look horrific:Unless they're chosen carefully, with a balance of value and saturation. One trick is to make one colour much darker. Then they can be quite striking:Restrain your palette. A couple of hues is good:Lots of hues is very bad:You can always add monochrome to anything i.e. black, white and greys (this is why they say black goes with everything - it does):And so on. Start looking around you at anything that has been designed, and you'll start to see common patterns: I virtually guarantee you'll find a design which combines one hue + monochrome within 30 seconds. There's a reason for that: it works.2. TYPEYou need to pick and set fonts well. Let's cover some simple rules:Be picky with fonts. Not all fonts are created equal. Compare:The best fonts tend to cost money. There's a reason for that. However, even with no budget you can do an awful lot with Helvetica or even - ulp - Arial (don't tell any designers I said that). Most of my Quora posts use Helvetica Neue.Don't mix more than 1-2 different fonts. You can add variety with different weights (e.g. bold, light) of the same font, like this:Mix too many fonts or sizes and you end up with a ransom note:Experiment with spacing between letters and lines (tracking and line height). The exact same font can be made to look very different:3. COMPOSITIONThere's an art to arranging things. Let's cover two simple rules.Defy expectations. People instinctively expect text to be left aligned at the top, or centred in the middle. Text is usually straight, and usually fits the available space. Defy such expectations to make designs interesting:Here's another: Use empty space. The purple design above defies your expectation of centred text, but it also makes strong use of empty space. The huge block of colour dominates the image and makes the off-centre text stand out much more. Here, spacing out the letters and putting them in the middle of a vast rectangle makes them more dramatic (and quite Batman, don't you think?):FINAL THOUGHTS Copy copy copyThe best way to get good is to copy others. Don't feel bad about this: it's one of the best ways to learn, and you'll soon realise that imitation is a skill in itself. You'll find inspiration on everything from a magazine stand to a shampoo bottle. Stop using crazy effectsMost software makes it easy to add drop shadows, textures with bevels and rainbow colour gradients. But if you stop and look around, virtually no good designs are built on those things. Overuse of such tricks is usually a sign of an amateur; like a writer who just learned about the semicolon and feels compelled to use it; everywhere.Learn the rules and break 'emAlmost everything I've said here can be defied with an astute example. It's like playing a note off-key - in the hands of a skilled musician, it can make a piece great. But learn how to play it straight first. And finally, for your health:Ahem.A footnote on softwareI haven't used all of these personally, but any of the following programs should be capable of creating what you see here:GIMP (free)Inkscape (free)Photoshop (I use a lot, and recommend)Illustrator (I use, and recommend)Xara X (what I used for all the images here, but is a bit obscure)I sometimes use a graphics tablet to paint, but all of the images here were made with a mouse.Enjoyed this? There's more of me on Facebook, Twitter and my blog.

Why are different road signs shown in different shapes?
Road Sings are timeless and highly functional piece of design thought. They actually demonstrate the design with high level of functionality provided via objects that look simple. For this reason road signs make everything they have functional: shape, color, direction, pictograms, images, letters etc.So, shape is one of the functionality features that communicates important information to users, both drivers and pedestrians, in univeral way for people belonging to different cultures, living and traveling around different countries and speaking different languages. Here you can see the explanation of basic forms provided by the resource Road Signs UK.They go even further, showing how different combinations of shapes and colors can change the message sent to observers. So the shape of road signs signals particular meanings by itself. Let’s review some popular ones:An upside down triangle means “yield.”An octagon signals the need to stop (exclusively!). (as the image in the question shows)A diamond warns of possible hazards and dangers.Pennant-shaped traffic signs present the advanced warning of no passing zones.Horizontal rectangles typically give drivers a guidance.Vertical rectangles usually serve as regulatory notices.A pentagon signals a school zone ahead or a school crossing zone etc.Image Source: Module~1 Slide 41Therefore, the shape of a road sign transfers a specific meaning and quickly determines the nature of the message it transforms: warning, regulation, information etc. The universality of such an approach has been proved by the drivers from many countries.I would also recommend you to look at this set of descriptions https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/wcm/connect/b0b65db6-00ce-4b53-ad68-16ecb5a2bc07/unit_4.pdf which provides quite extended explanations to meaning of shapes in the system of road signs.Recommended further reading:The Shapes | Road Signs UKTypes of Signs - Safety Signs MinnesotaHow to Read Traffic Signs: Recognizing Shapes and Colorshttps://www.gov.uk/government/up...https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/wcm/connect/b0b65db6-00ce-4b53-ad68-16ecb5a2bc07/unit_4.pdfI personally believe that people should start learning the meaning of this shapes from the early childhood. Moreover, on the basis of my extensive experience of teaching preschoolers and primary school pupils, I have to add that in this age they are really interested in the topic and this should be used properly. We are all a part of traffic, doesn’t matter being a driver, a cyclist or a pedestrian. Being able to get the message communicated by road sign, people get informed and can act appropriately according to this information.Hopefully my answer is helpful. Thanks for A2A

What are some mind blowing life hacks?
1. Secure your footwear at templesThe quick hack to the problem is to never put your footwear together and if possible, turn one of them upside down. This drastically reduces the chances of your good looking footwear catching a thief’s eye. Thieves normally just pick up the ones that are kept together and look good at first glance before escaping the venue quickly.2. Make moving to a new city easier for yourselfLearn to say “I am learning the language” instead of “Sorry, I don’t know the language” in the language of the city you are moving to. People are always glad to hear that you are willing to make the effort to learn their language!3. Prevent cake from going stale in the fridgeKeeping the cake out in hot weather can spoil it while storing it in the fridge can make it go hard and stale. The solution to this never-ending confusion is this fantastic hack that will ensure the cake stays nice, fresh and soft in the fridge. All it takes are a few slices of bread and some toothpicks to cover the open parts of the cake that aren’t covered by frosting.4. Being nice can help you out of a tight spotBe extra nice to people like security guards, hotel staff, chauffeurs, waiters and valets. They work all day and rarely get a kind word in return. They also have a lot of information about the locality they work in. You’ll be surprised how much they can help in return.5. Keep your essentials safe on the beachA great beach life hack is to clean out an old sunscreen lotion bottle and hide your phone, money and keys in there! Chances are that no one will steal this from you and you can safely keep your stuff in there while you’re in the water.6. For when you doubt your tea cup is cleanIn India, local tea stalls often serve awesome tea. If you have ever visited these busy stalls and been afraid of having tea in a cup that you doubt is clean, this hack is for you. Just turn the cup by 180 degrees, hold it with the left hand and have your tea. Most people are right handed and hold the cup in their right hand thus using just one half of the cup opening. Its not foolproof but being cautious helps when you are not sure!7. Smelly shoes no moreHot weather in India often leads shoes to emit an unpleasant odour. Deodorize your stinky tennis shoes by inserting old tea bags in them. After all, who doesn’t like wearing fresh smelling shoes?8. Stay on the safer sidePretend to talk on your phone when taking an auto/cab late night and casually mention that you are travelling in a cab and going by so-and-so route. An extra step you take on a late night cab ride is taking a picture of its registration number and sending it to a family member or friend.9. Say goodbye to pesky mosquitoesLets face it, mosquitoes are an aggravation. The buzzing, the biting and the itching are enough to send the bravest outdoor lover back into the safety of the house. So if you find yourself in a place plagued with mosquitoes and with no bug repellent on hand, what you can do is ask around for a mentholated pain balm such as Vicks Vaporub. It works like a charm to keep the pesky mosquitoes away.10. Handy in an emergencyTake a photo of a list of all the medications used by the members of your immediate family on your cell phone. It’s handy to have in the case of an emergency or even when you take them to see a new doctor. You can also add other important details, like their allergies and blood types, to the list.11. Get your stuff backIf you often forget about the stuff you have loaned to others and to whom, this hack is for you. When friends borrows a tool or a beloved book, snap a photo of them holding it. Next time you need something and can’t remember who you gave it too, the photo will help you get it back.12. Stop chilli from burning a hole in your taste-budsWhile chillies can bring amazing flavor to Indian foods of all kinds, nobody likes the fiery sensation of a chilli burn. Since capsaicin, the compound which causes the burn, repels water, it is not something you can simply treat with water. Milk, yoghurt and bread are a better and more effective option when it comes to cooling your burning taste buds.Source : googleMake your life easy now. :DThanks for reading!

Is it true that NIVEA Creme is more effective than expensive high-end face creams?
Honestly I’m not surprised by this news.I’m a cosmetic chemist who formulates skincare products for both individuals and companies…I know how the industry works very well.A major misconception in the skincare world is that expensive products are better than drugstore/cheap ones. This is simply not true and the reasons are:-When buying luxury skincare, you are not only paying for the product itself (ingredients, research, manufacturing, etc) but also for all the advertising, retailing locations’ rent, packaging, etc. I see this everyday, alas.-Many high end brands use the same ingredients as...

If you had 5 months to transform yourself into the ultimate consultant, how would you do it?
Somebody sent me an A2A (thanks!), so I am going to put my two cents out there. My view is probably somewhat different to the answers I read so far. So maybe take the advice you like best :)First of all, take it easy, keep it simple. No need to go full commando on the preparation. I understand that you are probably rather smart, and passing consulting interviews is not rocket science. And you need a bit of luck anyways. (Also a little downer: You will not become the ultimate consultant. Within BCG there are so many different people with different capabilities, style, etc. - we all have our strong sides and our weak sides. No way you will have only strong sides ;))I would focus on 4 things1) Buy a consulting interview book (one should be enough). Most of them point out the basic business concepts. Read and understand them. But no need to be able to repeat them word by word. No way you will impress with buzzword bingo, also most consultants probably can't do that either. Also do some of the cases, that are in there. Gives you a feeling of how they usually go and you can practice a bit.2) Watch some videos on what consultancies look for at their interviews. I think McK has a quite precise and detailed set of videos online.3) Do some case interview dry runs. I think there are online communities for that, you can also ask friends, or do some dry runs at smaller consultancies. You will get valuable feedback and a feeling of how the thing works. 4) If you are really weak on the quantitative side, do some exercises. Not all consultants are quantitative aces, but some basics are required. So get a bit of warm up on it.I know of none of my colleagues that have done signNowly more than that. (Caveat: I am from Germany, so that's my benchmark). Also as an interviewer one can actually most of the time identify when answers are overengineered or overprepared. I would not really be sure that this constitutes a benefit in the 'personal fit' part of the evaluation. Finally my personal take: Do not dedicate 5 months of your life to that endeavour. Seriously consulting is fun, but if you have 5 months to spare there are more fun things to do and to experience. That would also make for great conversations during the interview ;)

Why do so many foreigners go to China and think China is good?
Because it is more than good. Actually most Foreigners who go to China are surprised or impressed and do like CHINA.Most may fall into these 2 catergories:The Open minded, read MSM that see China negatively. Mostly tourists or to work. Amazed by how modern China has become, and about its people, economy, society, food, scenery. They realised how wrong they were reading MSM and the misinformation they were fed. They like China and fascinated with what China can offer. The learned, traveled, intelligent, or those that live happily in China. Many get sick of the hypocrisy and bias of MSM. Some become pro-China Quorans - to write about the no nonsense pragmatic Government, the amazing growth in economics, the mind boggling scale and speed of developments across the entire country, the rate of improvement in living standards for the Chinese people. Quite a number actually feel so strongly about media distortions that they actually start to defend China over sensitive issues like trade war, the SCS, Tibet, human rights or even the vocational training centers in Xinjiang. A few may even side China and bombast US geopolitics and economics, or the Western myths when they see unfair criticisms. For foreigners, most are awed, and quickly realise China is not what MSM paint it to be. They see Chinese as optimistic, happy and helpful. Their 662 cities are wonderful, many are super modern, connected by hiways, rail and air. With 60% (30,000 km) of the world’s high Speed rail, you can zip to cities at affordable price. Most at 300 kph or more. Seeing the dynamism and bustling activities is amazing. The rides were a trill, sometimes passing awesome unforgettable scenery.China is so happening. CHINA builds 24x7. New buildings pops up with every trip. And the next trip, LED displays cover the entire 40 storeys, 4 huge buildings actually sync to make a gigantic movie screen. I said energy wasting, friend said “good view”. Quite magical. 60% of all new tall buildings now happen in CHINA alone. China used more cement in 3 years than what US used in 100!Shopping and Consumption. China is a huge market, consuming about 43% of luxury goods, and its retail market is expected to bypass US as the biggest in 2019. Also I get endless choices at far lower prices buying online most of the time in China’s 1 trillion USD e-market. Also, the world’s biggest car market selling 25 million a year. For the sake of pollution it is good that China now pushes very hard for electric cars and scooters. Already China has more than 85% of the world’s electric buses (about 430,000) - each cutting down half a barrel of oil each.People are confident, friendly and warm, and even more helpful if yo u are a foreigner. The young will try to practise English with you. Curious and respectful. The language is beautiful, poetic, sophisticated but just too difficult.CHINA Tourism. So much to offer, history, culture, and endless exotic things. Immense number of beautiful and historical places for a life time. POETIC, lyrical, magical, spell bound scenery like from an old Chinese ink painting. Half of China is still undeveloped, and I do like the quaint landscape, old villages and canals more than the bright cities (below are some of my favorite spots - Xian/Terracotta, Suzhou, Great wall were actually from more than a decade ago). And when you tour, you can see that 55 minority tribes still exist with their colorful vibrant culture which is astonishing as most in other countries have disappeared.Politics? Then MOST are surprised. What evil communist country? People seem happy busy running their lives, and don’t care too much about politics or even missing google and CNN. When you ask about trade war, they become patriotic and say China will not be bullied again. In some restaurants, it is still amusing to see photos of Mao and past revolutionaries. One quaint old shop had so many such photos and iconic quotes in every corner of his ‘lychee wood Chicken’ shop near Quilin.American brands (KFC, starbucks, MacD, GM, Ford, etc) are everywhere. The malls, KTVs and restaurants never fail to impress me on their size.Cashless High Tech China - no need cash! ALL cashless via my Huawei, even giving a tip or paying for supper to an illegal street hawker at 2 AM.With 700m online and the world’s biggest craziest e-retail and social networks, they are flooded with information overload, crazy with gaming and social chats. What censorship? dont bother them either. And yes, there are even blogs where netizens speak politics too. The streets? far safer then most, with low crime rates (except money games : )Whenever I land in CHINA, everyday is like a holiday.Almost all parks and museums are free. Things are cheap. So many different types of “Grab”, and for me, ‘Didi’ is superb to take me anywhere far cheaper than taxis. although public transport is crazy cheap like 2 to 4 RMB.I watched world class orchestra and plays in their super new theatres but sadly just missed watching Swan Lake (Russian) in South China. The elite flood the theatres, and China don’t seem a developing country at all (Dress more elegantly than I ever can. I don’t have a Breguet, Patek or an Armani fur coat - yet. But I decided best not to wear my D&G T-shirt, out of respect LOL).Chinese Cuisine. And of course, I often agonise - WHAT to eat next. Below what I have tried in the last few trips. And so yes, many visitors got their round tummies from fantastic mouth watering cuisines! We learnt very fast that Chinese love to eat, and pretty much everything. Out of curiosity, I tried to look for a dog meat once south of Guangzhou, but there seemed to be a clamp down when I found a shop, the guy said rudely ‘don’t have’.EDITp/s: Bad, Ugly? No country is perfect, certainly not China. But media and youtude has plenty on the many perceived or real ills of China - pollution, food issue, corruption, over crowding, spitting, civic manners, dog eating, ghost cities, national debts, cctvs, social credit, 1984, GFW, etc, etc. You can easily find them yourselves.
