is of Indian origin and said to have come from the Delaware Indian name McGinn Joy meaning lik a term used in Pioneer days to denote the salt deposits where deer congregate the Indian word was used to name the maha noi mountain and maha a creek a branch of the big river Susquehanna that runs through the valley eventually it was used to name the little settlement that grew up along the banks of the creek thus the name ma Hanoi city was born a name that has become synonymous with anthracite coal as the young borough grew to become a major center for coal production and distribution throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries visitors to the borough will notice the historic architecture and rich landscape of the area situated in the valley of maha Noi Creek it is approximately 4 miles southeast of Shenandoah and 11 miles northwest of tamakwa with an elevation of 1240 feet above sea level it is overlooked by broad mountain a ridge extending through Schuylkill County when walking or driving through the borough today the deep historical roots are still evident as the city retains its old-world charm and grace ma hanoi city lives up to its motto of the city on the level it is a place rich in history of vibrant entertainment and classical architecture join us for ma hanoi city the city on the level ma Hanoi City is rich with history that dates back to the 16th century even before the land became the borough that it is today on August 22nd 17:49 a deed was executed by the representatives of the Six Nations and the Delaware Shamokin and Shawnee Indians of Pennsylvania transferring a tract of land to the provincial proprietaries for five hundred pounds the territory included the whole of Schuylkill County except the northern part of Union Township which was included in the purchase of 1768 the present site of Maha Noyes city was located in 1791 by a German hunter named rice who was known to spend most of his time in the woods in later documents he came to be known as John Reich he inhabited the old log house on the east side of the old Katowice attorne pike which is now Main Street and directly opposite of the offices of the mansion house building the first permanent resident of maja noise city was a manual Boyer who built the first house in 1853 the little Schuylkill company a railroad and coal company asked him to come and settle in order to take care of the land they purchased he was elected chief Burgess of Maha noise city in 1871 settled in 1859 and incorporated as a borough in 1863 the borough's coal production was served by branches of the Lehigh Valley and the Philadelphia and Redding railroads the mining of coal was everything to Mono city before coal was discovered here there was one log cabin in this valley so when coal was discovered here entrepreneurs people interested in making money off the coal came in and bought land from different companies and then set about finding out where the coal veins were so from 1855 when there might have been just a few hundred people in this whole valley to 1865 we now there's a few thousand people in the valley that was all because of coal so coal meant everything to the beginning of money city no coal no Mahoney City by 1864 railroads mine hill and Schuylkill Haven Railroad East Mahanoy railroad Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Maha Noi and Broad Mountain Railroad eventually successfully United the Mahanoy Basin from its eastern end by 1862 the building of the tunnel was important because it was the only way that the community and the region's coal could get to markets beyond our little pocket previous to the tunnel it had to be shipped in a lengthy process over the mountains by planes the Maha Noi plane had a pitch of twenty-eight degrees at its steepest point and rose five hundred twenty four feet from its base to the top it was two thousand four hundred sixty feet long work on the 3400 foot tunnel began in 1859 by Michael and Patrick J Barrie and was completed in 1862 during the three years of constant work and drilling and blasting not a single fatal accident occurred it connected the maha noi basin to the hosen Sauk area and eastward down two tamakwa the maha Noi Basin now had a railroad link to the east as well as to the western regions the Maha Noi coal trade boomed from 1860 to 1864 and along with the rise in production came a rise in population and housing by 1864 ma hanoi city began to look like a town instead of just a collection of houses the streets were wider and more defined with central businesses beginning to take shape whether you can speak the language or not you are still egg look you know if you had a strong back and going to work you could come here totally unskilled totally uneducated and make a living in the mines a very dangerous living but living for your family so what happened was the county just saw massive influx of immigrants coming into the de Cole region prior to the 1860s coal production in the borough was small in 1859 the total production of the calories neared 362 thousand tons in 1860 that number increased to five hundred twenty three thousand tons by 1863 coal production almost doubled the 1862 figure when 26 calories mined over a million tons of anthracite which was the largest total up to that point in time in the 1860s patch towns developed around the mines and calories operating there this was also the time when calories first began operations in and around the borough ma hanoi city served as the urban center for patch towns and as the borough grew in size it offered a broad range of municipal services and businesses to the people of the patch towns the mining industry provided the foundation for the development of non mining businesses as well as more related enterprises on the late 1800s life in a borough was good the mines are still in full force health care was was beginning to improve it had a good community feeling at the time I think maybe one thing that what's happened was that initial distrust of different ethnic groups was disappearing a little bit not a lot but a little bit and because at the very beginning it was very difficult to a lot of ethnic tensions here among all the groups that came in and it was almost layered where you know the English and Welsh came first then the Irish came and they were discriminated against then you got immigrants from other countries like Poland the Lithuania and then they were kind of on the bottom you know what I mean and it just kept going on like this well probably overall life at that time period was was was fairly well it was probably a good place to live a prominent resident Charles deke hire came to the borough in 1862 and formed the Charles deke hire company that same here he founded the kyer brewery in ma hanoi city and contributed to the borough's progress in growth Charles deke hire had a lot to do with the economic growth of the community he came here in the early days of the borough kyer was one of the original signers of the Charter for money city to become a borough he actually started out in the liquor business and soon turned to to bottling beer and ale in the 1880s he built the brewery a part of which still stands on North Main Street in mono city at the at the height of the brewery at the height of its peak production fire employed over a hundred and fifty people the brewery developed into one of the largest breweries in Pennsylvania with an annual production of over a hundred thousand barrels of beer and ale in connection with his brewery he founded the broad mountain ice company and controlled the anthracite light heat and power company kyer was a bank president brewery owner and operator of the Opera House a hotel and restaurant by the 1870s kyer became an active leading citizen of maha Noyes City and retained this position during the rest of the 19th century the Peter OtterBox house was purchased by the Charles deke hire family in 1887 and became known as keyers mansion it still stands in the borough today the kyer family lived there for quite a long time and eventually the mansion was auctioned off and the Goodman family from on tie city bought it and turned it into a bed-and-breakfast asthma hanoi city grew more and more organizations began to form the maha noise city post office was established in 1859 at 19 East Center Street with Jonathan Linden moof being appointed as the first postmaster in 1863 the First National Bank was organized on September 27th 1864 where the M&T Bank is now located the early residence in the borough had a desire to know the daily happenings and so the first major newspaper the Maha noise City Gazette appeared on Saturday November 11 1865 and was a weekly issue it was later changed to the maha noi Tribune on November 2nd 1871 Charles Spencer started the Maha Valley record and a year later this paper was sold to John Parker who changed the name to Parker's try weekly record other newspapers in the Burroughs history included the maha noi american the lithuanian sun the daily record and the maha noi press with all the families coming into the borough mostly due to the work the coal production provided schools were necessary in 1863 a four-room brick building was built right next to the log school called old Spruce Street school in 1867 the old Pine Street building of brick was built to compensate for the growing number of children in the town in 1871 the first Center Street building was built it was a three-story brick structure the town was alive we had 24 trains coming to town every day going to new york and philadelphia piano teachers from philadelphia came to town every week to teach the students we had an opera house we had a magnificent theater where John Philip Sousa and Efrem Zimbalist and all sorts of stars appeared most entertainment was the three theaters he had the Victoria you had the Elks theater and he had the State Theater and in the State Theater back then you could get into movies for five or ten cents you can't today the downtown flourished there was a fun bowling place to live in the churches of maha noise city played an important role in its history the first church built in Mahoney City was the Presbyterian parochial schools have played a large part of the community's educational life st. Fidelis school was the oldest and others were established by st. Joseph's st. kazimierz and st. Mary's Slovak congregations high school students from the local parishes attended the Immaculate Heart High School at fountain springs beginning in the early 1950s and now attend Marion High School in hometown all the churches were vibrant and they had their you know their minstrels and their shows the fire companies were growing you know active so you had a very nice area after a few fires the early borough residents decided that a fire department was a necessary element fires in the early days of the early days of the borough could be quite devastating early on Monte City found out that they needed volunteer fire companies and the first one that was formed there was the humane fire company on mano a street in the center of town and then shortly after the citizens fire company was established soon to follow Washington hook-and-ladder good American and later the West End Fire Company fires in the mid to late 1800s were tragic disasters in a community that's built olivewood in row homes it was simply the bucket brigades and very quickly very quickly the men organized themselves into fire companies but they were still dealing with water tankers there were no fire hydrants and these men worked very hard risked their lives to save what we have of the old town with rapid growth came some concerns it is difficult for residents of Maha Noyes city to conceive that there was ever a time when the spirit of neighborliness and goodwill did not prevail there in the early days of the community law enforcement was a serious problem for the town fathers who appointed a large Corps of citizens to serve as special police jacob l Bricker was appointed captain of police and this title was used interchangeably with that of chief of police until 1882 when george rudd law was elected head of the police department the period of strife cannot be ignored as the 1881 history states the period comprising 12 years following the organization of the borough was one of turmoil and lawlessness among the miners and laborers many of whom had been driven from other localities by the fear of punishment for misdeeds with an imperfect police force the law-abiding people found themselves obliged to be on their guard and in many cases to foster a part of the turbulent element as a means with which to control the other portion history refers to the Molly Maguires a rival society known as the ironclads or sheet-iron boys and the mo docks an organization that opposed the first two groups during the most turbulent period in the history of the community George major who had assumed the duties of chief Burgess on March 2nd 1874 was wounded fatally in in January of 1875 the coal owners often to the miners a contract that was wholly acceptable they went on strike throughout the area they struck until June of 1875 and in 1875 they were forced to go back to work they could survive they were they were dying so what happened was they had to take the contract that was offered and from 1875 for the next following maybe two years they were working at 40% of what their pay scale was some of them are working with only 54% of the money they were making back in the 1860s and this is what caused a massive amount of discontent in this area and it wasn't just the Irish miners or laborers who suffered it was anybody employed as a minor or a lowly labourer and this set the stage in the 1875 and forward of a lot of murders lots of property damage and all kinds of crimes it was a very very violent time in Schuylkill County history initially opened yet no longer operating in maha new city the McCanns School of Business adds to the community's reputation in the educational field Lewis C McCann founded the school in 1897 in Maha City and served as its first director it is one of the oldest post-secondary institutions in Pennsylvania with the growing education in the borough a public library was necessary the Maha Noi public library was organized in September 1896 and was housed in a second-floor room in the Pine Street school building until 1920 when it was absorbed into the library in the Maha Noyes City High School On June 28 1938 the library was moved to the maha Noyes Street building and several months later to its present quarters in the former Knights of Columbus building which was purchased in October 1945 with the completion of the transportation network in the maha noi basin the population of maha noise city began expanding from 1870 to 1880 the number of borough residents increased from fifty five hundred to 70 100 which was an increase of nearly 30 percent from 1880 to 1890 the town achieved a remarkable gain of 4,100 people for a 57% increase in population this was the greatest increase in population for ma hanoi city the increase in the production of coal coincided with the increase in the borough's population from 1885 to 1890 coal production in the Maha Noi Basin was consistently over 4.3 million tons each year an employment averaged over 15,000 workers annually from 1865 to 1994 employment opportunities available in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania I would say the golden era of the borough was in the early 1900s save say from 1902 to 1920 so the borough is a beehive of activity in 1921 there were probably over 400 businesses in mono a city anything you needed to buy you could buy in this town so people from all over came from came to mono a city to shop in the stores from all of the surrounding patches like Maria New Boston Delano Gilbert and Park Place so mono city really was a beehive of activity by 1890 ma hanoi city became the railroad center for the eastern Mahanoy basin transportation connections could be arranged in ma hanoi city to all local areas as well as to the major cities of northern pennsylvania new york a
d new jersey as the process of urbanization advanced ma hanoi city became more independent and self-sufficient as diversified industries were created to fill the wide range of demands of an urban population the borough citizens prospered in maja noise city miners owned their own homes and purchased from local realtors the wide variety of stores and shops located in maha noise City during the 1890s increased the purchasers independence in 1910 ma hanoi city was at its height of population at 15,000 936 in the sixty year period from 1910 to 1970 the population of the borough steadily declined as did mining activity as the calories began closing the residents started to leave ma Hanoi City by 1970 the borough only had seven thousand three hundred forty-five residents which was a decrease of over 50 percent in that sixty year period when the demand for coal decreased it was certainly a crippling situation where you had so many thousands of people literally working within a while with mile two miles of this area and when the coal demand for coal began to go down it certainly had a an impact on the town that was hard to overcome so many people eventually lost their jobs that they were forced to leave the area and the town that the population grew from 1860 up through the 1920s was now faced with a situation of a declining population because the people had nowhere else to go years ago the father was the one of the earner of the wages where the women stayed home and did that but then that that's changed when the Mayans went down and the women had to go to work and then the men had to travel to Allentown Redding Philadelphia because of nothing else being in it down it was a hard time going out back that when the deep mines closed throwing thousands of men out of work the township lost its tax base and much of its population efforts were made to resurrect this historic and prominent town with other modes of business and industry ma hanoi city is committed to revitalizing and developing the downtown area over the previous few years multiple projects have helped maintain and develop the business district area we started out slowly in revitalization with just a banner program then we put some trees in and then we were fortunate enough to get grants where we did a revitalization streetscape and phase 1 and phase 2 which included sidewalks trees benches antique lighting and we did face 1 & 2 and as we speak we're in the process of completing the project that we will have a complete streetscape from cattle whistle Street to third Street done this this summer Montee City is a great place to live because of the people that live here again we have the small-town atmosphere coal region pride people look out for each other we have friendly neighbors and again we have ongoing revitalization efforts to bring the community up to the modern times that we are facing the downtown center which has been renamed the Road Center was a project that took a building that was severely blighted in the heart of the downtown and completely redid the building from the ground up where we now have a state-of-the-art complex that houses our Historical Society a counseling firm Schuylkill County educational council and an office for PA senator Dave our goal development of the area at Main and center is replacing older buildings with a new office complex and a drive-up banking window for M&T Bank the downtown's aren't what they were in the 1960s and they're never going to be that again but they can evolve into something a little better than what we have now and we're seeing some progress and I'm hoping that we can continue enticing businesses into our downtown community to create jobs and create a better downtown environment and a quality of life for the overall residents ma hanoi city has been continuously improving the downtown area through development of the downtown streetscape I just see it as a small town that it always has been family atmosphere you know people can get to know their neighbors say hello out on the street to people they don't know people are you know friendly and in five ten years I think it'll be continuing to grow and prosper with changes in 2011 the borough was awarded over 1 million dollars in PCT I funding in order to continue development this funding will allow for the development of four more blocks of the business district two blocks in the east and two in the West this will allow for the installation of new sidewalks benches decorative lighting and other beautification the borough is committed to developing community recreation in 2012 the borough through a grant from DCNR was able to begin development on restoring the north 8th Street Park and phase one was completed in June of 2013 the borough recently installed the Molly Maguires Historical Park at center and cata Wisam this park commemorates the sacrifices of men called the Molly Maguires who fought for better working conditions for mine workers there's two stops actually within the borough besides the park that are on the Visitors Bureau walking Molly Maguires tour and the park itself does bring people from out of town and youth groups to learn about the significant history of the Molly Maguires and of the coal region at that era the Molly Maguires history is a history that needs to be learned by people of all generations so that history never repeats itself residents and officials continue to support restoration and revitalization efforts in hope that the borough can once again return to its golden era and be recognized for the family-friendly inviting place it's always been we reflect on our past in our community with fond memories the bustling streets in the downtown the factories the mansions they're all positive wonderful things for mana City as we go forward in mana city we can try to build a new mono city that has different things but doesn't but that will be good for the community when this map of Pennsylvania is a town - can be your town or it can be my town but it is a town and the name is Bonnard city a town celebrating its Emily Thomas III della will be 97 years 63 with him is 3 up
